Inner Surge is a an intense politically charged metal/rock band from Calgary, Canada. The band has been described as "one of the best imports that Canada has to offer" by RWS Magazine. With an eclectic, aggressive approach, the band fuses metal, rock, punk, hardcore and progressive influences. As opposed to conforming to the 'meathead' mentality of heavy music today, Inner Surge's energy is focused on breaking those stereotypes down, and pushing boundaries, both lyrically and musically.

The band was formed in 2001 by Steve Moore, who wrote and recorded the debut album "Solus Verum". The next album "Matrika", was released to excellent reviews. Space Junkies Magazine gave it 10+ out of 10, while Bands United described it as "Disturbingly fresh". Inner Surge's "Matrika" also made Punkcanada.net's "Top 10 of 2004" list and was re-released in 2006 by Cyclone Records.

Inner Surge was featured in the new book by Garry Sharpe-Young "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" alongside Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, and Norma Jean. Additionally the band will be featured on the official movie soundtrack for the upcoming feature film "Cabras". The director, Fredy Polania, who also directed the band's "Retribution Song" video, describes Inner Surge as "the next Rage against the Machine". Information on the film is at www.cabrassoundtrack.com. Inner Surge's music will also appear on the Macabro Films movie soundtrack for the psychological thriller "Amok!", due for release in 2007. Inner Surge is also featured on the Paladin Pictures film score for "Rebellion of Thought".

Inner Surge's music video for "Retribution Song" explores the band's political views and was partially inspired by the largely ignored Uzbekistan massacre as well as the Zapatista's(EZLN), a group of revolutionaries whom Inner Surge are supporters of. The video is available online for download. The band's second music video for "Wolves" was directed by Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Design. A radical departure from the "Retribution Song" music video, the video focuses on artwork to send a political message, with the band taking a backseat. The subject matter of the song and video deals with the events leading to and during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, when militia groups and ordinary civilians were encouraged to "cut the tall trees" and murder Tutsis and moderate Hutu's. The video for "Wolves" can be downloaded at the "Wolves" official site at www.freezen.ca/Wolves.

Inner Surge's newest album is the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking "Signals Screaming", an 11 track assault on human rights abuses and what the band sees as the international "blind eye". Released April 1 2006 through Cyclone Records, the album has been well received by both fans and music critics. "Signals Screaming" is being hailed as "one of the most essential metal albums of the year" from "one of Canada's most promising and most modern-sounding metal bands out there today." The lyrics cover themes such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide in "Wolves", the massacre of peaceful protesters in Uzbekistan in 2005 in "Retribution Song", and the repression of the FDA in "No Profit in the Cure". Canadanoise.com says "Signals Screaming is a battering-ram of an album that is impressive and powerful, both in sound and in message. Delivered through a screaming fury along with sung words that are weighted with disdain, the force of its lyrics is impossible to shut out."

The band's fanbase has been growing rapidly, and they are embracing more projects in 2007/2008. Inner Surge is currently preparing for the release of their new CD entitled "An Offering", which will be released Jan 18, 2008.

CDBaby chooses Inner Surge as Top Pick

Inner Surge is currently one of the top editor's pick's at CDBaby.com. Here is a copy of the review CDBaby gave the band:

http://cdbaby.com/cd/innersurge

"I will speak until there is no more sound" are the first chilling words that drift innocently enough through the restrained, ethereal opening track on the 11 song debut from this Canadian modern metal four piece. It's fitting, coming from a band that not only flexes indomitable musical drive and endurance, but also have plenty on their mind. Raging with a healthy cynicism that seems to be fueled primarily by injustice, these are songs rife with centralized furor and realized with a rarely seen gift for articulation that allows the music to expand without the message being lost. That's tough to pull off, and it's a real compliment to the cohesive nature of the players here. Calculated but not overly polished, this is intelligent rock that, much like Tool, isn't afraid to challenge the listener and keep them wondering what's coming next. Intricate and hard to classify, this is a record guaranteed to open your eyes and ears as it asks you to read between the lines to see the bigger picture.

OVERTHROW PROMOTIONS -
www.myspace.com/overthrowpromotions

On June 6, 2007, Canadian rock/metal band Inner Surge and director Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Design will be launching the band's new music video for "Wolves". Inner Surge and Shaun Friesen first teamed up in late 2005, when Free Zen Design did the original artwork and layout for Inner Surge's "Signals Screaming" CD, which received top reviews after it's April 2006 release through Cyclone Records.

The "Wolves" music video is a radical departure from Inner Surges previous video "Retribution Song", produced by "Cabras" film director Fredy Polania. Always one to break the mold, Shaun Friesens directorial debut focuses on multimedia collage and conceptual animation based on the songs subject matter the events leading to and during the 1994 Rwandan genocide - while the band takes a backseat. Inner Surge was inspired by acknowledged heroes such as Paul Rusesabagina and Romeo Dallaire, as well as the stories of the many ordinary Rwandans who helped others through this event.

The video for "Wolves" will be available for viewing and download at www.FreeZen.ca/Wolves. It is currently posted at MuchMusic's AXS website at www.muchmusic.com/axs/. For more information on Inner Surge and Free Zen Design, visit www.innersurge.com and www.FreeZen.ca. Inner Surge is currently working on their next full length CD tentatively titled "An Offering".

TOMATRAX MAGAZINE
Interview by Richard
www.myspace.com/teearrem

Q: There's a fair few songs off your albums Solus Verum and Signals Screaming and the whole of Matrika available to be freely downloaded on your site, do you worry that people will just download the music and never buy the album?

That is exactly what happens, in fact. We have fans who buy the albums to support us, and that's why we put effort into the album as a whole, the CD packaging, lyrics/etc. We'll be doing the same for the next album. We're big fans of sitting down and paying attention to a full album rather than downloading a few songs here and there.
That being said, we offer mp3's of our music so people can download it and spread it around as much as possible. "Matrika" and "Solus Verum" are two albums that for the most part we're not promoting anymore so more tracks are available. For "Signals Screaming" and it's upcoming followup, a balance has to be maintained.

Q: You're also currently working on a new full length, how will this compare to the previous albums?

We currently have about 3/4 of the writing done for the followup to "Signals Screaming" and will most likely be recording this summer. The album will be a definite departure and will probably be surprising to a lot of people. It's much more progressive, heavier, and with different vocal and musical styles. We're aiming to record as soon as possible as we feel this album will spread quickly and stand on it's own merit. It's extremely different from everything I see happening in music today.

Q: When do you think it will be out?

We are hoping for a release in fall 2007 and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to achieve that.

Q: Do you know what it will be called?

We have a tentative title and will announce that closer to the release date. We have a nasty habit of giving everything away too early because we're excited.

Q: Your lyrics are often thought provoking and challenging, when you write songs do you have lyrics in mind or do they come after youve written the music?

A little of both. In some cases the lyrics and music are written seperately, but there are a lot of cases where I write words based on the feel of the music. Either way, I have to line it up with what Scott and Bryan are doing so it harmonizes and accents. Lyrically, it seems whatever wants to come out comes out. It tends to be a mixture of specifics and cryptic message rolled into one. The next album will follow this pattern, but in a more aggressive sense than "Signals Screaming" did. There are going to be songs that are much more controversial though they are based on facts.

Q: How do you generally get inspired to write about a certain issue?

You have to relate to it in some way, and you never know what you're going to connect with until you learn about it. It could be anything because everyone has a story. You're not going to care about the indigenous peoples in Mexico, for example, unless you learn about them and that way relate their story to your own. You make it personal. People get inspired to work towards stopping diseases such as cancer from their own personal experience, or fighting against the international sex trade because they lost a loved one to it. Usually when you learn about things such as the slave trade, genocides such as Rwanda's in 1994, and other phenominons such as religious fanaticism and holocaust denial, it's an intense experience, but it's our collective story. I'm particularly interested in writing about irrationality, as it's so prevalent. Both Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins take on religion brilliantly in their books "the End of Faith" and "the God Delusion" and both books have inspired me. It does work against us that we tend to write about issues when people seem to be keen on leaving that to the elected reps, but in the end you can only really do what you yourself enjoy, and if it gives that small select crowd an option besides what's on their radio dial that is a good thing. It's the music that matters most.

Q: Do you ever have trouble coming up with things to write about?

There's never really a shortage. I'm always experiencing new things and going through different emotions. And even when I think I have nothing to write about, someone like John Travolta will make a comment about Anna Nicole Smith accepting scientology, or Rev.Ted Haggard will announce that he is heterosexual and that will give me ammo for the next year or two. Madness is the biggest topic of our times.

Q: What is more important for Inner Surge, to be known for their music or for the messages the music sends out?

The music is most important. This is why even though we do have some specifics in our music, we tend to keep some of the lyrics more general and cryptic in some cases. We want people to make the songs their own. The main thing is what you get out of the music you listen to, and what you do with that. The lyrics could be edited in many different ways and have a similar effect. We want to be known as a good band, not necessarily any particular kind of band, just a good band.

Q: You'll be featuring in the independent film "Cabras", what was it like to record for the film?

Filming the video was a great experience. It was all done in 2 days after filming at 3 locations. The song was taken from our album "Signals Screaming". Fredy Polania was the director and he did a great job. "Cabras" is currently in the running to be on Steven Spielberg's "On the Lot".

Q: You'll also be featuring on the soundtrack to Amok, how did that come about?

They were looking for metal bands for their soundtrack so we got in contact with them and they ended up liking the material. Amok is being released by Macabro Films, which has released quite a few films so we're excited to work with them.

Q: When performing songs for soundtracks are you given guidance on what they want or are you given freedom?

We don't typically record music specifically for film, and I'm not sure if we would do that. We write for our albums, and films may use the music from there provided an agreement is reached. We have to have full creative freedom when we're writing or recording music. Otherwise, we may just end up singing a song about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, not that that would be such a bad thing.

Q: You've talked about having a vendetta before going on stage or writing a song, have there been actual vendettas that youve felt you had to face when performing?

It's something that we've put into the music and I think is part of what makes us a unique band. We go on stage feeling we not only have something to prove, but that we have to fight through all the garbage on the radio and the news to get people to actually hear us. We have to play loud. We listen to the radio and don't understand it. It sounds like a lie to me, but then again, a lot of people enjoy Nickleback and Gwen Stefani, so maybe it's us. Maybe we're a niche band. I remember one show in Edmonton where I overheard some blatantly racist comments by a few people at the bar. When our set came around, I pointed this out in quite a public way. You never know what kind of effect it will have. Embarassment is the number one catalyst for change, I find.

Q: You've received a lot of critical praise for your past efforts, do you ever feel pressure with your new recordings to live up to the past albums?

Yes, I would say so. We want to make sure our new release is better than the one before. We'd probably delay the release of an album and go back to the drawing board if we had doubts. We definitely won't have troubles with the new album though, as so far it's sounding much bigger than most of the material from our other releases to date.

Q: What was it like to play along side Helmet at the Warped tour last year?

The Warped Tour appearance was good, though the best part was meeting Page Hamilton after their set. He was a very humble guy considering what Helmet's done in their career.

Q: What is the music scene like in Calgary?

There's a lot of indie rock and genre-specific music. I don't really know what to say about it. There are some potent bands though like Ahnabith Gish, the Evidence and Passado though that we enjoy. We don't really participate in the Calgary scene because we don't fit the concert bills, to be honest. Whether it's indie rock or death metal, what we're doing is more crossover than what's happening in general.

Q: Your songs often mix elements of punk, rock, metal etc (sometimes all at once), when you write the music do you think about what elements you want to put in the song or do you work it out as you go?

We tend to work it out as we go, although in some cases if a song starts out quietly or has a certain mood we try not to ruin it by bashing it to pieces. Whatever the song needs, we'll try to do. We're into a lot of different music so it has to come out somehow. I'm a big fan of Skinny Puppy, Portishead, Sinead O' Connor and Radiohead....mixing those influences with heavy music is a natural thing for us.

Q: Your first album was recorded in a homemade studio, was it hard to set that up?

I almost quit the project before it was started. The first album was basically done to get the songs out there and start spreading the word. The studio was basic. I would be doing the drum tracks and have to run back and forth between the mixer and the drum kit for the next take. It probably looked a little ridiculous. I'm glad that experience is behind me and we now go to Echo Base Studios for our releases and get to work with Casey Lewis.

Q: How did the recording of the follow up albums compare?

"Signals Screaming" was our best recording experience. Casey Lewis not only did a great job with the production; he's a musician so he was able to collaborate with the album and make some crucial moments work. This is why we'll be taking more time with him for our next album to make sure it's exactly the way we want it.

Q: Any question youve always wanted to be asked?

(set in the future)"What is your reaction to the recent international banning of religious teachings to children under 16 years of age?"

Q: Any Question you hate being asked?

"But...don;t you think L.Ron Hubbard has some good points?"

or

"Do you want to hear a joke? It's racist but of course I'm not racist...I mean..."

CABRAS SOUNDTRACK ON SPIELBERG'S "ON THE LOT"
  posted by: portalzoomposted: 02/23/07 08:52:36
"Cabras" film director Fredy Polania has entered his latest music video into the running for inclusion on Steven Spielberg's upcoming reality show "On the Lot". "On the Lot," executive-produced by Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will give aspiring filmmakers from around the world the chance to earn a $1-million development deal at DreamWorks. The show is premiering Spring 2007 on the Fox network.
Polania has chosen to keep the plot of "Cabras", a self-described "philosophical thriller" due out in 2008, under a tight lid, and has been mainly promoting the "Cabras" soundtrack. Polania is the first independent film director to shoot music videos for every artist on a film soundtrack - a total of 20 artists. He approaches the soundtrack by choosing what are, in his view, the best independent artists from around the world. Hailing from the United States are New Crash Position, Lauren Briant, Bizarre from D-12, Antedote The Neato Project, A New Way Down, The Morning After, and Cede. International artists include Canada's Inner Surge, Latvia's Detlef's Zoo, Switzerland's Manana, and Israel's Squid, with more on the way. Video downloads and mp3's for these artists are available at www.cabrassoundtrack.com.
It is the "Cabras" soundtrack that Fredy Polania is representing in his entry to Spielberg's "On the Lot". Israel's rock band Squid's video for their new single "Not Used To" is the current showcase. This alternative rock track showcases the band's sense of groove and melody, as well as their musical depth. Filmed at some powerful locations such as the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, the video showcases an inspired band in some inspiring places.  ALL ACCESS ROCK MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS INNER SURGE
  posted by: portalzoomposted: 02/14/07 16:19:43
Interview by Emmanuel "El Perra"
www.myspace.com/allaccessrockmagazine1

Inner Surge, you guys have been rocking the stages in the Canadian Underground scene and breaking every rule there is,tell us more about your stage & off stage action & a brief history of the band?

We feel as if we have a vendetta before going on stage, like we have to right a serious wrong, and it's the same way we feel when writing songs.
We're into full on uncomfortable, confrontational honesty and that comes out more in the live shows than anywhere else. We'd have more of a selling point I'm sure if we adopted a getup or joined a scene of some sort, but if that were the only option I'd rather just not play music. So the best way to sum up the shows is that we mean what we say and the performance is seen differently because of that. Sometimes it can work against us but there are also times when everyone "gets" it. Our CD release for "Signals Screaming" was perfect in that sense.
The band came to be in 2001, and 2 albums were released between that time and 2004. In 2005 the current lineup was solidified and we wrote "Signals Screaming". We're currently working on preparing our DVD release, as well as writing for the next album and other projects.

Your last cd Signals Screaming is a total masterpiece to me,its very explosive, dynamic,it hits you in your fucking face, the music is well composed, the vocals are fantastic, the production is very cool tell us more about it?

Thank you very much. It's an album that captured who we were at the time. We didn't want to be afraid to do something different and the writing all came naturally. Of course, we made sure we broke our own rules and patterns as much as possible at the time. Songs like "Wolves and "AzurA" are a completely different genre than "When the Door Locks" and "No Profit in the Cure", but they all go together as part of the expression. There are some themes we explore on the album such as the Rwandan genocide(Wolves), the worldwide "corporatocracy" as John Perkins would call it, privatization and branding, the media, and of course, determination and justice. The album was recorded by Casey Lewis at Echo Base Studio, and we are planning to record our next album at Echo Base as well. He's a great artist himself - if you listen to his band the failure you'll get an idea of his songwriting and musicianship.

You guys have been compared to bands such as Glassjaw,Rage Against the Machine & Tool among others, how do you guys feel beign compare to such great acts?

We're very honored when people liken their experience of our music to some of the bands we admire. The good thing is, when those comparisions are mentioned the next comment is usually "but it doesn't really sound like that" or "but different". This is a good thing because we're focused on blazing our own path, though we definitely admire bands like Tool and Rage against the Machine. I think the comparision to Rage is more of an energetic and at times thematic one, as the music is quite different, so we like hearing that. Zach de la Rocha is someone I admire very much. With the Tool comparision, we definitely have the musical influence, though the hardcore elements of our sound end up changing it dramatically. We're all huge fans of Tool and have been for a long time.

Are you guys writing new material, can we expect maybe a new e.p.,full length or anything from your hands?

Yes, we're currently writing new material and working on 3 projects in 2007. We will be recording a followup to "Signals Screaming" this year and it will be a full-length. The music so far is much more progressive, heavier, more dynamic and simply much better.

We will release a DVD in 2007 that will include music videos, live footage, interviews, new music, remixes and behind-the-scenes footage. The DVD will correlate with our new music video for the single "Wolves". We're still gathering material for the DVD and are basically trying to include as much material as possible for our fans. We want it to be something we would enjoy ourselves. It will be released through our artist Shaun Friesen's company Free Zen (www.freezen.ca)

Also, we will be working on another project that we'll announce on our site shortly. It will involve a collaboration and should result in an e.p actually. I'm also working on other material which can be heard at www.myspace.com/postdeathsoundtrack
Bryan and Scott from Inner Surge will most likely play on some tracks of the Post Death Soundtrack album as well.

You guys should go and play in the U.S.,are there plans of going down there and showing the fans out there who is Inner Surge?

Yes, at this point we're trying to get the word out there as much as possible so we can be supported in doing just that. As soon as we get some help over there, we'll be there.

Are you guys in plans of touring maybe booking an awesome Canadian tour or opening for big acts that go to Canada, has the oportunity found you guys or not?

We were looking forward to our Canadian tour with Paul Di'Anno last Fall but the Canadian leg of the tour was cancelled. We're currently working with Cyclone Records to secure tour dates for 2007. Our main priority is releasing the DVD and writing the next album, but we will take any dates, especially opening for acts we respect.

Are you guys gonna keep making business with the same record label that is distributing "Signals Screaming or are you guys gonna search maybe to land a deal with a U.S. label like lets say Interscope Records or Roadrunner Records?

I'm sure we will continue to have a business relationship with Cyclone Records.
That being said, I'm not sure what the future will bring, but we're open to the best opportunities. We're not going to say no to what's right for us.

Do you guys thing you are getting great response by your fans in the myspace page, your official page & live as well, tell us more?

The response has been great and we appreciate everyone who takes the time to write us. This is what we live for, so we work hard to release good material that people will know has some weight to it, and hopefully spread it around and tell some friends. That's starting to happen.

Any plans of appearing in any compilation cd,maybe making new merch too keep the band rising more & more, any plans for all that?

Yes, we'll be appearing on the "Greatest Underground Show on Earth Vol. II" metal compilation to be released by Cyclone Records. It will be a demo-version of a new song. It looks like there may be a few others in the works, and we'll post the info on our sites as we hear the news.

You guys work real hard I can tell that, but is all this work worth it are you guys getting the exposure an act like yours deserve in magazines & radio stations in your country & around the world?

Yes and no. It's very difficult to get people to hear this stuff, as music is still going through a "scene" phenominon. The hardcore bands still sound the same. A lot of the metalcore acts and emo acts sound the same (and look the same). It's a bit eery. That being said, we have a new attitude. We're going to play the music we want to play, and it's going to be different. In the end, it matters much more to us to put out good art than to belong to something that means nothing. We'd rather have our little group mean something. The press interviews are all planting seeds, and you never know who's going to read it or hear about it. That's exciting. Thanks for talking to us, All Access! Much respect,

Inner Surge

A COMMENTARY ON THE INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST CONFERENCE - BY STEVE MOORE
  posted by: portalzoomposted: 12/21/06 22:36:09
Let's make up History!

A commentary on the "International Conference to Review the Global Vision of the Holocaust"

By Steve Moore

History generally refers to actual events that happened in the past. It is
typically recorded in written documents, although there are other mediums.
Most people acknowledge that the majority of heavily documented
events did in fact happen, to one degree or another. Ideologies and interpretations vary widely, of course. For example, most people believe that John F Kennedy was shot. It is highly documented and easy to prove thanks to the many witnesses, medical documents, and the Super 8 mm film of the event caught by Abraham Zapruder. The motivations behind the assasination, the debatable conspiracy theories, the guilt of
Lee Harvey Oswald - these are all open to discussion and this
discussion/argument is recognized as part of a functional democracy.

However, it takes a different kind of person to believe, for example, that
Elvis is alive. This would require believing a fact not only with no evidence
to support it, but with a wealth of evidence to dispute it. Someone believing this to be true would either be incredibly stupid, or possibly have a mental disorder/disease to facilitate the irrational belief.

And we can liken these types of people with Holocaust deniers. Of course, just add hate. Since the Holocaust is not only highly documented, but the sheer amount of deaths is unfathomable, it simply cannot be missed by anyone. 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust, between 1.1 and 1.6 at Auschwitz alone. Millions of other people died as well. It takes a thick skull to ignore even the pre-war census, which was an underestimation in itself. There are lists of victim's names. Concentration and labor camps
can be toured. So what can we chalk up this spreading belief to?

A full embrace of stupidity is evident once the idea is entertained. To fully absorb anti-semetic beliefs, however, another helping hand is sometimes needed. This can be in the form of mental disorders such as literal interpretation of religion or religious prophecy. In many Muslim countries, the Holocaust is completely ommited from school curriculums, according to Aayan Hirsi Ali. She adds "Worse, most of us are groomed to wish for a Holocaust of Jews."

The reasons for the perpetuation of anti-semetic beliefs are dogmatic and
without any sane basis so they do not warrant further discussion. They can be likened to the simpleton belief structures of the KKK and their unjustified hatred towards Black Americans, a group of people merely asking for equal rights after years of slavery and torture. The Ku Klux Klan's membership has been whittled down to a few thousand in recent years (possibly the same people who
believe Elvis is alive).

Now there are plenty of groups of people whose beliefs, to most of us, are
simply implausible. There are the Raelians, the Scientologists, the
Unification Church, and many more that you can probably subscribe to on
their official websites (You can now even register for the Ku Klux Klan
online if you are so inclined. This proves that they now have thumbs and can use computers.)

The main issue with anti-semitism (and the KKK) is that, besides the fact
that it is baseless much like many of our political and religious belief
systems, it is deeply harmful. Within the realm of people who adopt
anti-semetic beliefs, a small faction of them will strive to act on these
violent ideas. Sign Iranian President Mahmoud Abmadinejad up for the latter.

On the 2nd day of the conference, Abmadinejad referenced the destruction of Israel once again saying "The Zionist regime will be wiped out the same way the Soviet Union was, and humanity will achieve freedom." Well, it looks like someone has finally found the answer to humanity's woes. Just blow up Israel. It's that simple.

Never mind keeping a tight leash on the press in your own country.
Never mind fully controlling the internet as well.
Never mind detention and torture as a means to silence dissidents for pointing out the obvious.
Never mind the lack of women's rights.
"Humanity will achieve freedom?"
Simple words from a simple man.

The conference opened on Dec 11 in Tehran, Iran. At the conference as well were former KKK Imperial Wizard David Duke, disgraced author Fredrick Toben, Robert Faurisson, even Rabbis Yisroel Dovid Weiss and Moshe Arye Friedman of Neteuri Karta. The now
ridiculed Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the conference
sought "neither to deny nor prove the Holocaust but to provide an
appropriate scientific atmosphere for scholars to offer their opinions in
freedom about a historical issue." Apparently David Duke is a "scholar." The shameful Rabbis in attendance are "scholars". Robert Faurission is a
"scholar".

Maybe if I abandon reality, ignore history, and come to ridiculous conclusions about the fates of people I never knew and will never have any right to speak for, I can be a scholar too.

Let's make up history!

TRENDCRUSHER RADIO INTERVIEWS INNER SURGE:
http://trendcrusher.googlepages.com

Inner Surge are a Calgary-based hardcore band.I got in touch with them via Myspace and 2 weeks later i had their cd "Signals Scremaing"with me.I was very impressed with what i heard, especially as i had never heard of them when i was in Canada.I spoke with the band recently about their new album "Signals Screaming",the scene in Calgary and a lot more.

Hails how are things in Calgary?

STEVE (vocals): Things are moving along for us mostly because of things happening outside of Calgary. The local scene is more black and white style-wise than what we're trying to do. Things in general are going well, though.

BRYAN(drums): The scene itself is pretty dry. I'm not sure if it's hopeless but I've almost given up on the live scene in Calgary.

You recently released you album "Signals Screaming" tell me about your album.

STEVE: "Signals Screaming" was released this year. We recorded it with Casey Lewis of Echo Base Studios and worked as hard as we could in the time we gave ourselves. We feel it's a strong entry for us and it gives people an idea of what we're about. Some of the inspiration for the album came from Romeo Dallaire's account of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, as well as from books such as Naomi Klein's "No Logo" and Koigi Wa Wamwere's "I Refuse to Die". What we were learning and going through at the time came out naturally through the music.

BRYAN: I think the album was a growing process for the four of us and it helped us integrate the sound and ideals everyone wanted to put across.

SCOTT(guitars): This album was the process of us compromising and deciding what we wanted to accomplish as a band. Steve was listening to a lot of Refused, while me and Bryan had been taking in some progressive influences, and everything meshed well.

I was very impressed with the production of the album. How long did it take to record?

Did you do any pre-production or demo before going to record the album?

STEVE: We spent only 6 days in the studio. We were very pleased with the production, and that was mainly the result of the professionalism and creativity of Casey Lewis and the way he approaches recording. He's a great musician himself, and knew what we were going for so he put a lot of work into helping us with that. We plan to work with him on our next album and spend more time at Echo Base this time around.

SCOTT: No pre-production, just straight to the task. It was rushed but we'll be taking more time next album. Casey was great to work with.

How does "Signals Screaming" compare to your previous album "Matrika"?

STEVE: "Signals Screaming" is much more aggressive. The production is more crisp. It also has more of a political tone to it. The musicianship is much better as well. The next album should continue this trend, although there will be a lot more progressive influences coming out.

BRYAN: For the first time, Inner Surge was writing as a unit rather than the ideas dominantly coming from one person, and I think without that dynamic the music couldn't have been as strong.

How does someone reading this interview get hold of your albums? Do you have any merchandise for sale?

STEVE: To order our albums, you can go to www.innersurge.com and check out the "shop" section. They are also available for download through iTunes, where you can download the tracks individually.

For those not familiar with the band give us a Brief history of the band.

STEVE: I started writing for this project in 2001 and recorded the first demo "Solus Verum" solo. That was enough to get things going and meet the musicians who would help me record "Matrika", which was released in 2004. After a hiatus, I met the musicians who helped me re-create Inner Surge in 2005 - Bryan Sandau, Scott Taylor and Jim Fernandes. Everyone co-wrote "Signals Screaming" together and are now working on new things. We have 3 albums and are writing a 4th. We're working on our 2nd music video as well.

It's clear from your influences and also your music that you are a political band; do you express your views through any other mediums other than music?

STEVE: Yes, we express it through working with various international organizations and charities, by writing, reading and discussing ideas with people we respect...And just like a lot of people, we're sometimes frustrated and don't know what could be the best approach to get something done. Some organizations who we've contacted have had a wall of bureaucracy for us to contend with (I won't name names). I have found organization's like Amnesty International to be very good and also open to help from anyone, which is great to see. I also feel that it's good to study as much as you can before jumping into something, because if you don't you could very easily help the wrong people. That's why we read all the time.

BRYAN: At this point I'm educating myself and when I get to a point where I feel that I have a clear understanding then I will pursue other mediums.

SCOTT: I enjoy writing myself, but my political world is my band. A lot of what I learn is from our discussions.

Do you have Allegiance to any Canadian political party?

STEVE: No. I think that anyone focused on human rights cannot possibly ally themselves 100 percent with any political party or group. There are simply different motivations there.

BRYAN: There really aren't enough options. I would equate it to choosing between the best of two evils. All of their platforms will basically lead us to the same place. None of the parties seem to approach environmental issues, violent crime or human rights with much of a sense of urgency.

What are your thoughts on the Political situation in Canada?

BRYAN: I think before we address Canada we need to address the world as a whole, and of course that inevitably leads to the U.S of A and their stance on international law and cooperation.

SCOTT: I agree. I feel you need to really learn about the world as a whole before you can understand your own country, because people here think the same things as everywhere else, only in smaller numbers perhaps. Racism is an issue here just like it is everywhere else. Nationalism tends to lead to segregation and in turn to racism. If Canada was one of seven dwarves it would probably be "Sleepy". We need more action on the part of our government.

STEVE: It's complicated. There are many Canadians who are progressive thinkers and this keeps the controversy on religious issues such as gay marriage and abortion rights at a lower level than in the U.S. It's good that we can sometimes laugh (sometimes with horror) at some of the things people make a fuss about elsewhere.

I'd like to see more progress made in regards to the First Nations Peoples here. A second look at the Kelowna Accord or the drafting of a similar agreement would be significant in this regard. We should have an interest in a consociational agreement that works for everyone, not just the oil industry or the business community. The environment is another issue that needs more attention - genuine attention as opposed to lengthy misguided conversations.

I don't think patriotism is an overly positive thing, but it's great to see so many Canadians eager to help out in other areas of the world, whether by volunteering or financially. The more this government can tune into and follow the people's will and example, the better. You just have to ask the right questions in the right way to get an accurate view on what people are looking for.

Due to a surplus in the Alberta budget all it citizens received a certain amount of money (Can't remember now), how did you spend the money you received?

STEVE: We put it towards the band actually. We thought that would be the best thing.

BRYAN: Drums.

I first heard about your label, Cyclone Records when I got a compilation they put out of Calgary bands titled "The Greatest Underground show on Earth". How did your deal with them come about?

STEVE: The album was being finished and the cover art was in progress, and Brad from Cyclone Records approached us about releasing the CD through them. It has turned out to be mutually beneficial, and we look forward to dealing more with Cyclone Records in the future.

Your band has been interviewed/reviewed by quite a few zines and also featured on quite a few radio shows/podcast. Do you have a PR agency/management company taking care of that or is it handled by the band members?

STEVE: This is mainly handled by myself and the band. It's all about getting the ball to roll down the hill. You have to push and contact magazines, radio shows and podcasts in order to have new people hear about you. What we're finding now is that we're getting on a lot of radio playlists and websites without contacting anyone. They're just finding our name somewhere and checking us out. It would be nice to leave that to a PR agency though, and that's something we're looking into.

Your band was mentioned in a book by Garry Sharpe-Young titled" New Wave of American Heavy Metal". How did that happen?

STEVE: Interestingly enough, we were not contacted in regards to that book, so we were flattered to be included with such great bands.

Tell us about the hardcore/metal scene in Calgary.

BRYAN: We're outcasts and we're happy about that fact. For whatever reason we've faced a lot of naysayers and closed doors so we've forged our own path and focused our attention internationally.

STEVE: Tough question. We're not really part of any scene locally. We don't fit the mold. When we do shows it's mainly to play new material we've written or to play with another band we respect. We appreciate the people who come out. We've enjoyed sharing the stage with bands like Passado, Creature Republic, Caveat, the Failure, Johnny Incognito and a bunch of others. Other than those good points though, you're either hardcore or you're metal. It's a black and white scene and everyone seems to want to join a club. There's a lot of bands who just want to be metal, which would be fine if that was anything new or exciting. I enjoy bands with something of value to project.

SCOTT: I'm into some local bands and we've made some good friends, but there's really not much to it other than that.

Which are the bands in Calgary that we should know about?

STEVE: You should know about the Failure(our producer Casey Lewis is in the Failure). You should know about our labelmates Creature Republic and Caveat. You should also know about Passado, Ahnabith Gish, Johnny Incognito and Studded for Pleasure. They're all friends of ours and are all creative bands.

SCOTT: I'm a big fan of Ahnabith Gish and Creature Republic. Both bands are melodic and sound great musically.

Have you toured other parts of Canada?

SCOTT: We're planning that out right now, as our cross-Canada tour for this year with Paul Di'Anno was cancelled.

How was it playing at the Warped tour?

BRYAN: To be honest I'm not a huge fan of most of the bands but I love the energy and the idea of people getting together and sharing creative energy.

STEVE: The best part of Warped Tour was meeting Helmet, who happen to be one of our favorite bands. Being in that environment is something we could get used to. There are a lot of trendy bands there and because of that, a lot of the kids are used to hearing 'cute' music. That can work in our favor though because we seem to get more people stopping and listening when we're onstage at an event like that. We just play harder.

It gets really cold in Calgary (sometimes going down to -40 c brrrrr) how do you keep warm?? Do you use any substances like drugs/alcohol?

STEVE: None of us are overly indulgent but we're up for the discussion to be open in regards to the legalization of consensual crimes. "Ain't Nobody's Business if You Do" by Peter McWilliams is an excellent introduction to the topic.

You songs "AzurA" and "The Outcome" are included on the upcoming film soundtrack for the Macabro Films psychological thriller "Amok!" How did that come about?

BRYAN: We started talking with them when we heard they were looking for heavy bands for their soundtrack. Luckily they were interested in 2 of our tracks and we may work with them on other projects as well.

And also recently selected for the soundtrack of the Paladin Pictures film "Rebellion of Thought", which songs will feature on that soundtrack?? Also how did this come about?

STEVE: I contacted them because it looked like they were putting a lot of thought into their concepts. They chose "AzurA" for inclusion on the film score.

Future plans for the band?

SCOTT: Definately to drop our next album by mid-2007 and to tour at the same time. We'd like to get more involved with charity work as well such as benefit shows.

STEVE: We have big future plans. We're working on our music video for "Wolves" at the moment with Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Design (www.freezen.ca). "Wolves" will also be our next single, and we'll be promoting the single/video come early 2007. A CD Extra/DVD will also be released in limited supply early 2007. We're about halfway into the writing of our next album as well. More music videos as well are on the way. To keep posted visit www.innersurge.com.

Any goals you would like to achieve?

STEVE: We'd like to write the best, most powerful music we possibly can and reach as many people as we possibly can. Everything else will fall in place as long as we work hard on those things.

Thank you for answering all my questions. Any final words and comments?

STEVE: I appreciate the interview. Thanks for the conversation. Cheers,

SICK FILTHY ROCK MAGAZINE INNER SURGE INTERVIEW

Interview with Inner Surge

INNER SURGE - VERY INTENSE NAME. ITS SO INSANE AND IN YOUR FACE. TELL US A BIT
MORE ABOUT THE BAND,CAREER AND IT'S HISTORY.

We're a band that puts everything we have into our music and we take it
seriously. We're taking new steps forward all the time and the music seems to
be getting a lot more confrontational as we move forward. It can be cryptic
and sarcastic, especially the new material, but every method is a tool to get
the music across. So far in our short career, we've released 3 albums and are
writing our 4th already. The most recent release is "Signals Screaming",
which was released by Cyclone Records. We're working on our 2nd music video
right now for our upcoming single "Wolves". We're going to be appearing on the
movie soundtrack for "Cabras", due out next year. Every day we work harder to
get our music out there and we won't stop anytime soon.

ARE INNER SURGE ON TOUR OR NOT,WITH WHO?

We were booked to play a Canadian tour with former Iron Maiden vocalist Paul
Di'Anno but it was cancelled on us unfortunately. Nothing is booked at the moment but
we are gearing up for a tour in Spring/Summer 2007 for sure. We look forward
to getting out on the road and promoting the new music and we'll tour with any
band that are serious about what they are doing and will stick to their plans.

YOU GUYS HAVE AN INSANE POLITICAL CD "SIGNALS SCREAMING" FOR EXAMPLE
ON YOUR HANDS WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?

"Signals Screaming" is our newest album, released in 2006 through Cyclone
Records. The album is a departure from our older material and is overall much
more aggressive. The 1st single was "Retribution Song", and the video for this
track is available at Google Video, youtube and www.cabrassoundtrack.com. Shaun
Friesen of Free Zen design did a great job on the album cover and booklet for
"Signals Screaming" and he is also going to be working on our music video for
the 2nd single "Wolves". The video/single should be released in January so we're
excited about that. The album was produced by Casey Lewis of Echo Base Studios
and he did a great job as well.

This album is more politically based than other
albums we've done but it's also quite cryptic and doesn't go into specifics very
often. "Wolves" is one song that talks about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in the
only way we can - our imagination's interpretation of the event, basically
paying tribute to the resilience of the Rwandan people for going through
something we can't even visualize. This song is about hope. Our next album will
take a more sinister look at some of the orchestrators and co-conspirators in
the genocide, namely the Interahamwe. We'll also take a look at the role of
the United States and France in assisting the murderer's to safety after the killing
stopped.

"No Profit in the Cure" is a song about the de-evolution of mankind, poverty
around the world, and the battle of humanity versus profit, a battle that almost
always loses to profit. This is where the FDA comes in. Prolonging major health
problems creates consistent profit whereas eradicating them will also eradicate
profit. This is why I think you hear of laboratories being destroyed and burned down
when there was major potential progress being made.
Some books that inspired "Signals Screaming" include "I Refuse to Die" by Koigi
Wa Wamwere, Imperial Ambitions by Noam Chomsky, No Logo by Naomi Klein, Shame by
Talisma Nasrin and a bunch of others.

"Signals Screaming" si available at www.innersurge.com.

ARE THERE ANY PLANS OF MAKING A NEW ALBUM SOON OR ANY LIVE STUFF LIKE DVDS &
SHIT?

We're already working on writing our next album and are about halfway through
the process. The music is very different from anything we've done or heard before
so we can't wait to start recording hopefully in summer 2007. We've got a lot
more up our sleeves though. A new music video is coming in January for "Wolves",
and Shaun Friesen of Free Zen Designs(www.freezen.ca) has a great concept for it.
We'll possibly have some live tracks available soon for download and will be working
on a DVD oir CD Extra with Shaun Friesen as well. It will include our 2 music videos
for "Retribution Song" and "Wolves", live footage from our CD release party, behind
the scenes footage from the video shoots as well as some possible new music.

DEFINE METAL & HARDCORE IN YOUR OWN FUCKING WORDS,BE SINCERE,WHAT YOU LIKE &
WHAT YOU DONT ABOUT IT?

The things that I love about metal and hardcore music is it can be
unflinching and it can get you through hard times if it means something.
It can push you forward when nothing else can. With that being said, I can't
stand seeing so much talent being wasted trying so damned hard to be "metal" or
"hardcore". Most of the bands who focus on those things end up sounding more
like comedy acts than what they're trying to be. Theme-based metal and hardcore
can be good but sometimes it escapes me as well. Why not just be honest and skip
the getup?

So, in general I lean towards bands and artists who talk about relevant
things to my life and don't have a set outfit rather than bands who talk about
dragons, Satan, zombies or their religion that they feel everyone should convert
to. But that's just a general preference because bands in every genre can be great.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT TODAYS PUNK,EMO AND OTHER SHITTY MOVEMENTS BEING SUPPORTED IN
THE U.S.?

Well, it's hard to explain. There's a lot of scary elements to it. I listened
to an album by a Canadian band that I'd prefer not to name. I enjoyed the album
at the time and it was in this vein of music. Me and Bryan(drummer from Inner Surge)
went to see them live as a local show. They all had the same haircut, the tight
shirts and girls jeans. Their moves were choreographed as well almost like a boy
band. The crowd seemed to like them but we were so disgusted we talked about it
for weeks.

So that's one scary thing is that masses of people like this stuff. The other
amazing thing is that much of it sounds the same. You can play band after band
in these genres, whether you choose 'pop hardcore' or emo, and you won't be able
to tell the difference. And the bands themselves don't even realize it either.
I think it's like a bad dream we need to wake up from. In the early 90's, bands
like Nirvana, Rage against the Machine, Tool, Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails,
Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden were popular, but this was a good thing because
they were all original and all sounded very different from one another. Today
it's the exact opposite.

WHAT BAND DO YOU HATE THE MOST,WHY?

Well, first of all we don't wish any ill will towards any bands. Of course I
could give you a list of hundreds of bands that annoy us. In Canada, Nickleback
is one of the most embarassing, but the band's shouldn't be blamed. It's the
people who actually buy these CD's and spread mediocrity.

WHICH STYLE OF MUSIC IS THE MOST HATED BY YOUR BAND?

I can find artists and songs I enjoy in almost any style of music. The music I
dislike the most is any form of superficial or dishonest music. This tends to
be about 90 percent of the mainstream. Overall though, we're not really country,
emo or r and b fans unless it's Johnny Cash, Sunny Day Real Estate or...old school
Bobby Brown.

DESCRIBE YOUR LOCAL SCENE AND YOUR FANS?

The Calgary local scene is small but can be a lot of fun. Most of our fans are
outside of Calgary for some reason but local people are starting to pick up on
it and follow us through our myspace or the official site, www.innersurge.com.
Lately at shows people are starting to sing the words along with us and that's
a great feeling when people connect with the album like that. We're looking forward
to getting to know more local fans.

SO WHATS IN THE FUTURE FOR THE POLITICAL,MIND OPENING ORIGINAL BAND INNER SURGE ?

There will be more experimentation, more confrontation and a lot more music. We're
doing a new video, a DVD/CD Extra, and a new album. We will be doing activist and
charity events as well. This year we'll be promoting non-stop to get the word out
and anyone helping us do so we appreciate. See you soon everyone, and thanks for
supporting us in what we're doing. All the best!

CALGARY SUN - CYCLONE RECORDS CAUSES STIR

Brad Trew is hoping to rely on something relatively untalked about and relatively rare in the industry to make his label Cyclone Records work integrity.

My integrity is all I have, Trew says simply while sitting in a local coffee shop.

A testament to how much, he thinks, is the past he put behind in order to pursue Cyclone full-time Trew was an investigation manager for a courier company, dealing with theft, fraud and other unseemly activities.

Again, that should make him perfectly suited for the music industry.

I know how tough it is and how little trust there is, Trew says, so I really nurture that when I talk to bands.

Trew formed the concept for a label like Cyclone 20 years ago, but didnt actually put it into practice until last April, when he left his job in Calgary and headed to Toronto.

He thinks the concept behind the label, which has a current roster of about a dozen bands, the majority of which are Calgary-based, is a unique one, with Cyclone merely acting as a promotion company and manufacturer for a predominantly iTunes and web-based market.

In keeping with the trust aspect of the label, the band controls its own masters and provides the finished product to Cyclone, with no contracts, only co-operation between the two parties.

We work together as long as were happy working together, Trew says, noting he chooses who he wants to work with based on how committed, responsible and talented they are.

The last thing I want to do, being a fairly new label, is to hold people back.

If an opportunity comes along where something is going to take them to that next level or somebodys going to be able to support them better than I can Im not going to stand in the way of that.

Some of the bands in the Cyclone stable already enjoying some success include Calgary metal act Inner Surge, as well as local hard rockers Creature Republic.

Other than full-length albums from those bands, the label has also in the last 12 months released a few compilations, including metal compilations The Greatest Underground Show On Earth and On The Verge: Albertas Best Rock.

But while many of the bands involved with Cyclone lean towards the harder side of things, Trew points to The Heart of Alberta compilation featuring area roots acts, as well as forthcoming releases from country artist Allen Christie, and a recent signing, Washington, D.C. rapper Tarue to show how diverse the label is. And with submissions coming in now from around the world, he thinks it will expand even more and his dream from two decades ago will take off even further.

I just wanted to give it another shot, he says.

And to be honest its gone way further than I anticipated it would.

Its been an interesting ride, Ill tell you that.

You can check out the label or make submissions via the website www.cyclonerecords.ca

Hardcore today
There are still many bands today that follow the lines of original hardcore. It has evolved somewhat since the '80s but still follows many of the ideals.

There are also many contemporary bands who play hardcore in an original, purist sense while attempting to add even more intensity to the music. These bands often adhere to a specific local flavor of hardcore. Another common trend is to try to capture the sound of influential bands from an earlier era. One example of this would be D-beat bands who emulate the early music of Discharge, like Deathcharge, Dischange and the Japanese band Disclose.

Many hardcore labels continue today and keep the tradition of the music alive. Among these are Deathwish Inc, Bridge 9 Records, My War Records, Revelation Records, and Lockin Out Records.

Additionally, the name "Hardcore" has been applied with increasing frequency to what most would consider heavy metal. Groups like Inside Recess, Bleeding Through, Inner Surge and Poison the Well have fused the aggression of traditional hardcore with the intensity of metal. Typical of this "metalcore" genre are heavy breakdown parts and harshly delivered vocals, sometimes verging on death metal growl. As this new kind of music has evolved, so has the sub-culture associated with it; for example, fashioncore. In the 1990s the name "hardcore" even came to be applied to a genre of electronica having nothing in common with hardcore punk.

Although the term "Hardcore" has come to be attached to this kind of music, some fans of traditional Hardcore deride its use. Today, some reserve the term "Hardcore" for the style of the early 1980s, referring to today's genre as "Street Punk." A good example is the California band Final Conflict.

There is also an emerging hardcore scene, predominantly in California, of hardcore punk. Mostly bands involving younger people, places such as the Burnt Ramen, Warm Water Cove and long beach wherehouse continue to host DIY punk shows. Bands such as Gnar, Deadfall, K-BAR, and most importantly WARKRIME bring a hostile approach to modern hardcore, taking the sound of older bay area bands and making it their own.

 METALCORE (WIKIPEDIA)
  posted by: portalzoomposted: 08/15/06 16:24:42
Nuclear Assault was amongst the first to call their music a heavy metal/hardcore punk hybrid, though still thought of as a metal band by most. On the other hand, while not thought of as a metalcore band by many today, Breakdown was arguably one of the earliest to fuse heavy metal-influenced riffing with a more traditional hardcore sound without being a thrash metal band. Around the same time, bands such as Integrity, Maximum Penalty, Leeway, Biohazard, Madball, Judge, and Raw Deal began releasing demos and albums, laying the foundation for metalcore bands to come. Most songwriting by these bands was similar to New York hardcore but differed in a more metallic sound, due largely to the use of double bass drums, harsher distortion, heavier riffs, and metal influenced vocals. This basic form of metalcore has received the epithets - which can be used both with and without derision - "tough guy hardcore" due to the lyrical focus, which is often similar to older hardcore in that they call for moral and mental strength and integrity, but may also have a slight focus on violence, and "moshcore", due to the often breakdown-centric, mosh-friendly songwriting that some bands use.

During the middle of the 1990s, bands started expanding the metalcore sound, prime examples being All Out War who used straightforward thrash riffing, as well as bands such as Rorschach, Starkweather, Orange County's Adamantium, and Deadguy, who experimented with looser, often discordant songwriting as well as less traditional rhythms. Converge, although starting out as self-confessed "hardcore kids with leftover Slayer riffs", have since bloomed into a hybrid of hardcore, metal and progressive instrumental and electronic experimentation, they like to call "punk-metal". Zao is another band that left a mark upon metalcore, particularly Christian metalcore, with their Carcass-like vocals and varied songwriting.

From the late 1990s and particularly after the turn of the millennium, metalcore has grown immensely, to the point where major record companies are taking interest in the genre. Recent releases, such as As I Lay Dying's shadows are security and Killswitch Engage's The End of Heartache have charted moderately high on the Billboard 200.

One sound that has become immensely popular (dubbed by fans as "Gothencore") is to mix Gothenburg melodic death metal, popularized by bands such as At the Gates and In Flames, together with old school metalcore. Today, many popular metalcore bands play this style, including Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Caliban, Bleeding Through, Fall to Grace, Anand Clique,Inner Surge, As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, All That Remains, and Unearth.

Some bands, such as Botch, expanded on the blueprints of Rorschach and Deadguy, bringing forth intense mathematic influenced guitar riffs, as well as songs.

Contemporary metalcore scenes are notorious for social hierarchies, the promotion of violence, and the organization of its members into gangs typically known as "crews." Metalcore fashion is not dissimilar to that of "hipster" or "indie" college students, replete with tight shirts with band logos on them, tight jeans, and highly stylized hair. Tattoos, piercings, and an extreme devotion to the music also characterize the scene. Of course, these are just some common stereotypes.

Cabras movie
Cabras is a feature film directed by Fredy Polania of Polania Pictures. The film is due for release in late 2007. Its subject matter is largely a mystery but it has been hinted it will take a religious/philisophical approach to the horror genre. More details will be revealed at www.cabrassoundtrack.com, as the music videos are intended to "count down" to the movie release and full trailer launch in late 2007.
The "Cabras" soundtrack generated somewhat of a following prior to its official release due to the videos from bands such as Canada's critically acclaimed Warped tour 2006 act Inner Surge, Israel's popular rock band Squid, Latvia's Detlef Zoo, and other bands and acts such as alternative rock band the Morning After, hard rock band Cede, Warped tour 2005 veterans New Crash Position, r&b performer Lauren Briant with D-12's Bizarre and California's popular rock act A New Way Down. Inner Surge is an intense, politically and emotionally charged metal/punk band from Calgary, Canada. The band has an explosive live show and blends punk, rock, metal, hardcore, progressive, electronic and eastern influences. With an eclectic, intense approach, the band explores politics and deep seeded emotions in it's music. As opposed to conforming to the 'meathead' mentality of heavy metal and hard rock, Inner Surge's energy is focused on breaking those stereotypes down, and pushing boundaries, both lyrically and musically. The result is a sound that is compassionate, yet unapologetically raw.

The band was formed in 2001 by Steve Moore, who wrote and recorded the debut album "Solus Verum", a 16-track epic with an intensely personal lyrical approach. The next album "Matrika" was recorded at Organic Sounds studios in Calgary, and was released to excellent reviews. Space Junkies Magazine gave it 10+ out of 10, while Bands United described it as "Disturbingly fresh". The album has been critically acclaimed and has earned them positive reviews in many magazines & websites, as well as spots on CBC television and Skratch Magazine. Inner Surge's "Matrika" also made Punkcanada.net's "Top 10 of 2004" list alongside 36Crazyfists, Alexisonfire, Killswitch Engage and Rise Against. "Matrika" found the band reworking their sound, making it tighter and more hardhitting.

Inner Surge has played many shows such as Warped Tour 2006 at Race City Speedway, the "Rock against Racism 2002 and 2005" concerts in Calgary, the annual CJSW 90.9 Metal Fundraiser and the Southern Alberta Hardcore & Metal Festival. The band has also organized it's own benefit concerts for charities such as Operation Eyesight Universal and the Evan Shaw Foundation.

Inner Surge will tour across Canada with former Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Dianno in Spring 2007. Inner Surge played in Calgary for Warped Tour 2006 at Vans City Speedway alongside Helmet, Underoath, Moneen and AFI.

The band will also be featured on the official movie soundtrack for horror film "Cabras" alongside New Crash Position, A New Way Down, Detlef Zoo, The Morning After, Cede, Lauren Briant and Bizarre from Eminem's band D-12. Directed by Fredy Polania, the film is due for release in late 2007.

Inner Surge's music video for "Retribution Song" explores the band's political views and was partially inspired by the largely ignored Uzbekistan massacre. The video is available at Google video, myspace.com, youtube.com and www.cabrassoundtrack.com for download.

Inner Surge was featured in the new book by Garry Sharpe-Young "New Wave of American Heavy Metal" alongside Dillinger Escape Plan, Mudvayne, Mastodon, and Norma Jean. The band has also appeared on many compilation CD's and DVD's including Canadian metal compilation the Fire Union, Skratch Magazine's compilation CD, where Inner Surge appears alongside Epitaph recording artists Converge and Hot Water Music, political DVD release "When Today Becomes Tomorrow", Phat Mountain Films 2006 snowboarding DVD release, Atom Sounds Records compilation, Synaptic Graffiti's latest release and Funender Music's compilation CD. Inner Surge has also become very popular on various online podcasts and radio shows such as Headbanger's Lab, Fat Cat Radio, Politipunk, Cindycenter, Scrub Radio, the Big Break, and Cyclone Record's Eye of the Storm podcast. Inner Surge is promoted by Cyclone Records.

Inner Surge's newest album is the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking "Signals Screaming", an 11 track assault on human rights abuses and what the band sees as the international "blind eye". Released April 1 2006 through Cyclone Records, the album has been well received by both fans and music critics. "Signals Screaming" is being hailed as "one of the most essential metal albums of the year" from "one of Canada's most promising and most modern-sounding metal bands out there today." The lyrics cover themes such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide in "Wolves", the massacre of peaceful protesters in Uzbekistan in 2005 in "Retribution Song", the repression of the FDA in "No Profit in the Cure", and what the band describes as "self serving corporate groups on the road to destroying themselves". Canadanoise.com says "Signals Screaming is a battering-ram of an album that is impressive and powerful, both in sound and in message. Delivered through a screaming fury along with sung words that are weighted with disdain, the force of its lyrics is impossible to shut out."

Inner Surge's intense and honest sound has given the band a fast-growing following, and with plans for a new album on the horizon, the word is sure to spread.

INNER SURGE is set to tour with former IRON MAIDEN vocalist PAUL DI'ANNO.

Di'Anno will be make 20 stops on the Canadian leg of his world tour this September in support of his new album, The Living Dead (Zain Records) and the June release of Early Classics, featuring re-recorded early Iron Maiden material produced by Canadian music veteren Tom Treumuth.

"This tour was a natural progression for us", explains frontman Steve Moore.

Inner Surge's career has been growing in leaps and bounds, with the recent release of their Signals Screaming album through Cyclone Records. Press is responding positively to the release, some calling it "one of the best exports that Canada has to offer" by a band that "will reach worldwide notoriety." With the inclusion of their human rights centered track 'Retribution Song' on the Polania Pictures' Cabras soundtrack and a video by Cabras director Fredy Polania released on May 2nd, that exposure will grow even further.

Dates and locations for Inner Surge's tour with Paul Di'Anno are still to be determined. Stay tuned for further updates.

 CANADANOISE.COM "SIGNALS SCREAMING" ALBUM REVIEW
  posted by: portalzoomposted: 06/28/06 09:42:07
By now this CD has been out for weeks, so if you havent listened to it already then shame on you. Signals Screaming is a battering-ram of an album that is impressive and powerful, both in sound and in message. Delivered through a screaming fury along with sung words that are weighted with disdain, the force of its lyrics is impossible to shut out. INNER SURGE practice a kind of intelligent metal that inspires a sense of bitter unrest towards the state of humanity, their consistently angry vocals speaking of political issues and worldwide concerns. Such militant words are fueled by pummelling bass, deep guitars, and energetic drumming with tons of double-kick action. This is a mostly heavy album, being focused as a whole towards a harder, faster metal sound than the bands previous release.

The opening track, Azura, makes a quiet entrance but is only misleading of the aggression to come. Any notion of this being a timid record is dispelled when the album launches into the loud and distorted fierceness of The Outcome, followed by a barrage of other songs of a similar power. At their most aggressive they contain thundering bass drum, finger-tapping guitar riffs and soul-crushing screams that are all made clear and intense by the albums production. There are many softer moments within these songs as well, but things dont truly ease up again after the first track until Wolves. This song fits in as a quiet change from the distortion-driven tracks preceeding it, lacking screams and consisting of some excellent clean guitar picking. However, this is only a slight break between the pounding force that INNER SURGE have to offer in large servings. Things pick up heavier than ever with the next track, Where The Door Locks, and remain so with occasional melodious interruptions until the climactic ending of the nearly colossal No Profit In The Cure.

This album expresses INNER SURGEs talent for creating music that hits hard like a brick in the gut. While the structures of the songs vary and the tone and pace change rapidly, their music maintains an excellent flow that can easily capture a persons attention throughout the course of the album by way of its vicious force and melodic intervals. The vocal and musical harmonies are well executed, as are the contrasting ambush of screams and discordant instrumentals, making for a collection of songs that does not become dull at any instant. Signals Screaming promises to be an essential contribution to Canadian metal this year, the impact of its message and aggressive style being sure to turn heads. INNER SURGEs music is a voice that screams out to be heard, and a voice I would recommend listening to.

Australia. All the videos will count down to the unleashing of the official
website and trailer for the film.

"Retribution Song" will be available May 1st for stream and download at

INTOLERANCE GETS ROCKED(Canada)
Rock Against Racism runs at Knox United Church March 19

18/3/2005- Apathy can breed a lot of things, the most troubling of which is hate. Thats what Marie Jurcevic says is one of the dominant reasons behind the annual Rock Against Racism concert, which takes place March 19 at Knox United Church. In a day and age when the majority of racial intolerance in North America is more subtle or more covert, its important to remind people, especially young people, it still exists.

Most definitely, thats one of our prime objectives, says Jurcevic, whos the youth co-ordinator for Youth Reach Out Against Racism, which is run through the Committee on Race Relations. Thats something I encounter on a regular basis, the underlying sentiment that there are no issues, its not a problem. But its really dependent on who you ask and their own personal experiences

Steve Moore, from local punk metal band Inner Surge, one of the acts on the bill, agrees with Jurcevic. Ever since I started Inner Surge its something I wanted to get involved in, Moore says, explaining he and his group are inspired heavily by Malcolm X and their lyrics are full of social commentary. In my experience Ive travelled the U.S. and obviously had small-town experience and I feel these days (racism) is something more silent rather than a non-issue Its not really dealt with and it doesnt have too much of a forum.

Inner Surge are one of the acts on a diverse, all-local lineup which includes The Summerlad, URBANdivide, and Kay and Ace. There will also be a resource fair in an adjacent room, where community organizations will be set up, as well as groups dealing with social justice. Rock Against Racism http://www.rockagainstracism.ca/ is only one of several surrounding March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination a significant day, but one that Jurcevic hopes wont be recognized at the cost of the continuing need for tolerance and action on a daily basis. I realize its important to commemorate March 21 and I think its an important day to have however sometimes what people forget is were doing this work all year. So if they want a speaker, if they want to learn more about the issues if they want to get involved there are always opportunities for that.

An Inner Surge of Political Outrage

Band's new CD rages against machine

HEATH MCCOY
Calgary Herald

Inner Surge's influences, as cited on the sleeve of it's latest CD, Signals Screaming, include such contraversial voices of left-wing dissent as Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore, George Orwell, Naomi Klein and Public Enemy's Chuck D. Steve Moore, 25, the metal band's frontman and lyricist, says watching the movie Malcolm X as a youth changed his life, lighting the fires of political outrage.

Indeed, listening to the band's new disc - which they'll release Saturday with a gig at the Warehouse Underground - you'd think that when the members of Inner Surge weren't bringing the pain, via their blistering heavy metal attack, they were plotting a guerrilla attack on some evil, capitalist corporation. Or, at the very least, throwing eggs at the Petro-Canada building. Not so. BY day, Moore works in a bank. Hey, we've all got to pay the bills.

Even so, Moore's lyrics - while frustratingly abstract in some instances - are clearly cut from the views of his favorita intellectuals. In No Profit in the Cure, he rages against perceived corruption in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as in the corporate sector.

"It's about the trend fo corporations making choices that are detrimental to the population, but positive for a few select investors," Moore says. "Decisions are made in favour of the corporate sector(with no thought for the)health care situation and the social security situation, which is getting worse all the time, with more and more people living below the poverty line."

Retribution Song was inspired by the massacre in Uzbekistan last year, Moore says, where hundreds of people were gunned down by the country's army while protesting their authoritarian government. The accompanying video, which Inner Surge hopes to get played on MuchMusic, shows clips of various freedom fighters, while depicting the band members themselves dressed in black, wearing balaclavas, with the logo of a pointed gun on their shirts. Is Inner Surge therefore advocating violent political protest?

"Not necessarily," Moore says. "My philosophies are growing and changing all the time (based on) what I read. I used to share a Mahatma Ghandi point of view, of non-violent resistance, and I still do to some extent. But I've also learned about different popular revolutions, and I feel in some cases they're definately necessary...What inspires me to make music is the whole idea that dissent cannot be crushed.

"You have innocent people being stifled by their governments. But then a group of people in Canada start talking about it. Ideas can't be suppressed."

Moore's idealism aside, how much change can an underground metal band in Calgary really inspire?

The singer insists Inner Surge are not posers, paying lip service to the forces of left wing rebellion - a hip stand in the rock world. For example, the band is planning to organize a charity gig in the future to raise funds for the Romeo Dallaire Foundation, which aids children in Rwanda affected by the civil war and genocide of 1994.

In the meantime, there' smuch on the horizon for Inner Surge. The band is enjoying a relationship with California-based filmmaker Fredy Polania, who directed the video for Retribution Song, and Moore is looking forward to appearing on the soundtrack for Polania's upcoming horror movie, Cabras, to be released in 2007.

That film, Moore stresses, will not be "your average horror movie. It will be more spiritual. There will be something to take from it."

Enriching people is important to Moore as an artist.

"I'll read something in the news that upsets me and I'll express it, the rage comes out(in the music)," he says. "Hopefully people will look at our inspiration and maybe they'll follow."
