When the recession hit, greece lost a lot of it's tourism. So they didn't have as much money as they usually did.
The government ended up spending more money than it had on state-funded social programs. And then greece's trade industry took a pretty nasty nose-dive. That on top of already low taxes? It wasn't pretty.
Greece ended up borrowing more money than it could take on and the government ended up in a HUGE amount of dept. like..... 146 billion dollars below their GDP. America is in trillions of dollars of dept, but it equals out with our GDP added in, so it's alright (not great, but we're not totally screwed yet).
there are like.... thousands of other reasons, but those are some of the primary ones.
the EU, led by germany, are still trying to help greece out. but honestly, it's over. They just need to declare bankruptcy and move from there.
Actually, not really their biggest problem. I talked to a classmate who was from Greece; basically most of the workforce is employed by the government; and those workers get everything paid for them. In return they pay very little or avoid tax altogether.
So basically they took everything out without replacing....
And that also meant there was very little in terms of private enterprise; so when the government runs out of money it collapses.

They exist everywhere but I highly doubt that they are as highly concentrated in some other places as they are in the United States.

Yeah, i was kind of running past and over-simplifying that in the "government spending" and "industry nose-dive" parts of my explanation. Really, there's a LOT of problems. like... it's a giant mess.

It always makes me laugh when people think that americans are like, a different creature than the rest of humanity. People are people. They're both good and bad, understanding and stubborn, nice and dickwads. Doesn't matter where you go. Basically, some social morals are different which comes down to how open they are about their hate. As time goes on, more and more people are becoming more open minded. Like south korea for example. It was believed (and still is amongst the older population) that homosexuality was a disease (like, a germ or virus) that was brought over from westerners. Only recently have people taken a more western look at the issue.

it was actually illegal for a period of time there to be catholic. catholics were slaughtered by the thousands. but once it became legalized, EVERYONE was catholic.

it has to do with s.korea being VERY VERY VERY catholic and thinking that no koreans were gay ever before the westerners got there.
There's a similar phenomenon in Uganda where they've outlawed homosexuality and it's become punishable by the death penalty. I can't remember if the bill passed, but it was written in the last few years.. They believe that Westerners brought homosexuality aswell. But they're working with an American evangelical... The psychology, while terrifying, is fascinating to me xD
