I liked leveling up in FF7 (exploited some places with high exp/monster level ratio), but didn't bother going after the best items because I didn't really need them. In FF9, I got the sword "Ragnarok" from the chocobo treasure hunt because you actually needed it for one of your characters to hit 9999 (or you can go chase after excalibur, but it's not very good).
I guess after seeing how unbalanced the game became after I got the quadra-magic materia, I kind of lost some motvation to keep going for "better" items.
Edit: Alright, does this sound more like a real review? I tried to eliminate the "favouritism".
Well, I don't remember being that far at 5 hours. I was probably going really slow though, because I ran headlong into any and every enemy I found, and I missed a ridiculously more powerful weapon for Lightning near the very beginning. Hell at this point, on Gran Pulse, about to fight Dahaka, I still have Lightning's default weapon. Also I almost never managed to make even one star on the battle results screen because the fights took forever for no thoroughly explained reason.
At the 5 hour mark in FF7, I knew who the final boss was, and witnessed firsthand that he was not to be messed with. I also knew that Shinra was sucking the life energy out of the planet to comfort their own rich butts. On Gran Pulse, significantly further than 5 hours in, I've never ever heard the name of the final boss. I know Barthandelus is involved somehow, but I know for sure I hadn't met him 5 hours in.

Who the hell is they? I don't know.
Also, while this might be a misplaced opinion seeing as how I've yet to complete the game, and probably never will, Lightning just didn't seem involved enough in the plot imo. Call me oldschool, but I prefer it when the protagonist has some sort of previous relation to the antagonist(s). Cloud knew Sephiroth from long ago. Squall knew Edea, who was possessed by Ultimicia, for pretty much his entire life. Zidane was made to be a sort of "brother" to Kuja. Tidus is the son of Jecht, and a dream of the fayth, which links him to Yu Yevon. Lightning... was part of some military organization, yet to be disclosed, and.... oh hey look, there's an old guy, let's go hate on him...
Yes, I know that's not quite how it went down. Point is that she didn't really have a previous connection to Barthandelus. At least none that has yet been made obvious to me.
I also fought every enemy I could see...and didnt stop doin that until I got to pulse...in which I still fought about everything...so I dunno you cant have been going much slower than me....as far as the 1 star thing...Im just gonna be blunt about it...your not doing it right...you just arent...I got 4-5 stars on every battle until about 1/3 through the game and Im thinking even after I stopped doing that my star average was probably about a 3 for the entire game....if you missed the weapon Im thinkin of then you werent paying attention...sorry...I mean if its the sword Im thinking of then it really wasnt hidden at all...I mean the chest might have been a little to the side but it wasnt behind anything or anything like that.
They are the military...the military was purging cacoon. If you like a game where the protagonist has a past relationship with the antagonist thats fine...however I dont think you can count that against the game...if you wanna say you didnt think Lighting was involved enough thats fine...I mean I disagree but that point is valid.
And yeah even if you played through the first battle with Barthandelus you would know why they were fighthing him.
if you are talkign about gladius
it isnt a hgidden box
if you are exploring the area as you should in any rpg then you will simply pick it up
like anyone else XD
and yes if you cant even male one star i dont think you are doing it right
in fact i would go as far as to say i KNOW you are not playing right
because there IS a way to get 5 stars in every fight
i idnt get five stars every fight no
and there wherre a few i got zero on but not as many as i did make stars on at all XD
in fact one of my only real complaints was that the game was a little too easy
perhaps a few bosses or fights took a while to beat but wherent hard only time consuming but again most enemies with the right strategy can be beaten pretty fast and the bosses well bosses SHOULD take a while to fight XD
for me the plot grew fast enough that i wasnt sitting and waiting for anything it unfolded and kept me int he story i met the final boss soon enough
and well i am very picky about people not even meeting the bloody boss yet even in anime XD
you know that the corps and psicom are purging the place because of falcie infection and you know from the start that it is wrong and that they are the enemy you may not meat the leader right away but you have an enemy and a reason not to like the m from the start and that seems enough for me XD
lightning seemed enough int he plot for me although i know a lot of people who would argue that vannille is the main protagonist because she narates the game XD
to be honest no character is more involved than another which is NOT a bad thing f you want it to be all about one character thats fine but i enjoyed every character having an equal story int he game
it is a personal view that you like games to have the main protagonist knowing the antagonists beforehand
of course yes squal knew medea but was she the main antagonist?
as far as i remember she was the first disk boss and shortly after that she was not an enemy so yes for the first disk that point may be true XD
if you only like games when there is a significant backstory between them then you are missing out dude and im pretty sure a few FF games you probably enjoyed never mind hundreds of other great games didnt have that back story
and if you want to say any antagonist
you know the corps and psicom are bad and yes lightning does have a past history with those doesnt she ?XD
you know like shinra that the military is purging cocoon for thier own reasons and lying to the public XD
anyway like i said
that is personal prefference nothing that makes the game bad XD
i hope these arent spoilers for you
because wlel im pretty sure you know it near the start of the game
and defenitely by gran pulseXD
Though seriously if Im out walking around in the night to ASDA with the pedo/rapist/murderer/psycho of questionable sanity vampy....who do I have to be afraid of? XD

Yes, I am referring to Gladius. And somehow I managed to get absolutely everything else in the area. The only reason I even know it's there is because a friend of mine told me about it, and I looked it up, and it is indeed there, and indeed the only thing I missed there.
And yes, I know I'm doing it wrong, but I've not really been given any indication of how to do it right. In fact, the idea that there is a specific way of doing it right puts me off even more. I thought one of the key features of an RPG was the ability to adapt your character's growth and skills to your playstyle, not to get punished for it.
I'm not even going to debate this anymore, the point is that I found the game poor by comparison.
well i guess you just got unlucky and missed an area >.<
well myself. aruko and a lot of others got intot he fighting system and understood it enough to find it somewhat easy so maybe you need to check some youtube vids and just see how it is done on certain enemies (although a general obvious style attack heal or debuff attack heal with a sentinel thrown in when it is needed works for most it may give you an idea on how to do it and once you have done it a few times it will come naturally
just a thouhgt
if you arent able to pick up on it
not meant to sound degrading or anything
but yes you are entitled to your oppinion i only replied because your reasons seemed specifiv to you and not to the game XD
