Im totally with you egam, but im not one for generalization. That being said, first impression wise sure, you have my respect regardless of age, but if you assume that you are better than someone simply because of age, well i just dont buy that at all.

so yes, there are a large amount of people that are elderly and have much experience and things they could teach me, but some simply don't and they take my respect for them for granted.

problem number 1 right there.

after that you have the "grumpy" people, but i dont really see them as grumpy, more like stuborn and simply refusing to adapt the the world around them. they are "set in their ways" and that gives them the right to be obnoxious, offensive and sometimes racist.

problem number 2

I simply wont stand for such ignorance regardless of the age. at that point i just distance myself from the person and move on. theres no need for me to be rude or get in their face about it as they indeed are set in their ways, so its just a waste of my time to show them this. not to mention a "youngin" lecturing them on the ways of life usually throws up a big wall between me and them thus making anything i do say outright disregarded.

My sentiments exactly.

As I've stated before the only two kinds of people that really piss me off in this world are two faced people, and more importantly close-minded people.

But while they do get me angry (and often I might add) they're not always to blame.
Sometimes their upbringing may be the reason, lack of attention so to speak... or in some cases, TOO MUCH attention.
Which also applies to the elderly; if they act like that, chances are they've been that way their whole lives, which goes back to upbringing, for which I obviously shouldn't judge someone completely on.

@Slayk

This all relates back to age.
As stated before, the younger you are, the more you can learn from other's mistakes, and the older you are, whether intentionally or not, you'll always have something to teach others... especially the younger people...

I agree with moet of what s being said here but I'll just add my own 2p too.

Okay so heres the thing, i think it is totally fair to assume that someone younger than me is less mentally and emotionally mature than myself, because, well they will be. You say you can think of adults who are less mature than some children but that is not neccesarily right, these adults may still be more mature but choose to act in a way that appears less so, also an adult is naturally more wise as to the way the world works, they have to work, pay bills and in some countries are forced to partake in politics to a great degree this will inevitably make them more mature than any child or young adult

HOWEVER this doesnt make children or teenagers inferior or in any way less valuable than an adult. As several of you have pointed out there are many children who could put an adult in their place in terms of academic knowledge and younger people tend to be much more creative and imaginative then older people. Where older people demand respect for their wisdom and ability to pass on knowledge younger people should be respected for their vitality and their potential to surpass the previous generations.

Also to a certain degree, if i do come across a child who is more mature and adult like than myself then something is wrong, they are trying to grow up too fast and are missing out on being a child, youre only allowed to be childish for so long, enjoy it while you can.

K, well

1. Experience, yes you are right, but, sometimes, you are older have more experience, but you do net learn from it or teach it...

2. I think the way i do, not because of my age, but because it is how i think, iin 20 years, i will be here, maybe less, but i will still be here, and i may type better, may explain myself better, may be less lazy but my way of thought will always be the same, i will always think up things randomly, making sense only to me, and i will still think that age has nothing to do with maturity and intelligence.

3. It's not that you be rude to people who are rude to you, but that you should not treat them as some one who is polite you. Don't misunderstand me, I do agree everyone should respect anyone and everyone, but to be polite to rude people is giving them to much, yet you should still respect them. ( please, please, please don't misunderstand me, it is really bugging me...)

4. And to those which you can blame there upbringing, well, it's up to them to understand in a wider way, if you are closed minded, it is because you wish to not believe such things are possible, or required or deserving.

K now that i stated another rant, i think that well, i should say this:

If any one here is offended by what i said, i am sorry, I do not mean to bother
anyone, just to explain my point of view.

Slay.

Nope, I still believe that you should be polite to everyone because if you are rude, the rudeness just spreads.

I said, to be respectful, that means not rude... gah... i should just give up, i should have known people would not understand what i'm saying.

but anyways what i meant is you be respectful to everyone, and anyone, no matter how they are to you.

see respect and being polite are kind of not at the same spot on the scale, being polite is uttermost respectful, and respectful, is just being respectful, being rude is wrong, i stated that.

in other words

It's not that you be rude to rude people but still respectful in a way.

I disagree with you, being polite is way you should treat everybody, there doesnt have to be respect to be polite just a need to be civil and not be rude. Respect is an entirely different thing, respect is something people have to earn, i dont just give respect to anyone i meet but i am polite, does that make sense?

All of that makes sense to me. Personally I give people an allowance of respect if I have just met them because you never know who a person you just met could be, and I try to be polite to everyone.
I think you two are both saying the same thing, but I think that slayker's connotations of the words "respect" and "politeness" are the reverse of what the majority's connotations of the meaning of those words are.
And back on the topic of age, I do think that there are some differences in a lot of age groups just because of the way that the brain is forming in human development. It is a matter of the brain's growth and development, it is obvious that there are differences. And there are some things that children of certain ages cannot understand. For example, a child, I am not sure of the ages but, I know it is definitely all children under 1 year old, has not developed object permanence, therefore, if someone put the child's rattle behind their back, the child's brain perceives that the rattle no longer exists. And children up to a certain age will, if you line up an equal number of coins, even if they know how to count, and in one line the coins are widely spaced, the other the coins are bunched together, when asked which line has more, they will automatically say the one with the wide spaces because the perceived line takes up more surface area. But that is younger children, from about, say 7 up, they tend to understand the world in a similar fashion as you and I do, they do go into a stage of egoism usually in their teens like I have mentioned, but it seems like some people never stop living that personal fable, and others only live it for, like, a day. I mean that is an exageration of course but it seems like some people mature really fast.
But yeah some adults are set in their ways as the T-Rex monster said before. And I can see how a little bit if they have been around you since you were a child they might still see you as that 3 year old who can't tell that both lines have an even amount, but that is because they choose to be ignorant of you having grown, ergo, their own fault and not an excuse.

People have difficulty understanding you because of your writing style. Try reading the article "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell. It can be found online with a google search.

i'm sorry i didn't read all your posts -.- it's too much and i'm low on battery
slayk, i kinda know what you feel, but you can't seriously expect ppl to treat you differently from other 14 year olders, it's not that you're not mature, it's just ppl who are older than you USUALLY know more things you do, and have far more experience, i understand that a 15 year older sometimes has more experience than a 29 one IF his/her circumstances made it that way, but that's not very often.

and the respect bit i DID read, i agree with kuro, you earn it, you don't demand it, BUT you still are polite to ppl you don't respect, as in you're not gonna go all "F*ck off" on someone you don't respect, am i correct? you only do that to someone you particularly dislike or someone who offended you.

as uhm....well i always bring this up, but anyway, while i was working as a teacher, i realized age mattered little in most aspects of life, but it MATTERS...for example, students who were...let's say 16 (i started teaching at 1Cool wouldn't treat me as a teacher, i was their friend, which wouldn't've been bad but they wouldn't listen to me, and a 60+ student would always mock me and kinda laugh at me cos i was even younger than his children. *shrug* age does matter in some cases, but it doesn't in some others. and as a piece of advice, don't expect ppl to treat you different from other ppl you age UNLESS you show them you are different from them, and you only do that through your actions and words

i'm sure you'll work this out when you grow up *pat pat*
lol sorry, i'm kidding, what i mean is, you'll work it out just fine, just try not to harm ppl because of it (you mentioned that in your post), if you do it, you'll only show them they are treating you the way they should

That was an over exageration, as i said at some point, all i do is rant.

and i understand and this time i kept myself calm, i understand your points, and i hope you understand mine.

and by respect, i did kinda mean what kuro meant in politeness. as i said, my head works weird and stuff.
so i agree with kuro on that.

and i also agree on the respect allowance, and i understand what you mean by the devellopment of the brain, endy, but once your brain has developed to a certain point, it gets quite close.

and, Tsuki, I understand what you mean, but i meant more people, who know me really well, and my friends who are not that much older then me, and i am told i'm more mature then them, but they smoke like 5 joints a day, and i have quit, so maybe that has an effect.

and, Lucky, may i ask hopw this articul would help me?

I always acted older than what i was, that was because i hung out with people that were older than me for the most part. Here's the trick to not letting your age get to you (besides legal reasons):

Don't tell anyone.

When you go somewhere, dress up a little bit. the most dressed down that's allowed is Jeans, a studded belt, and a band shirt. and even then, I do my make-up and hair. If you talk politely and use moderately big words, you'll seems 5 years older, I promise you. In HS, i got away with being a junior all through my freshy year. The only people who called me "Stupid freshman" were the people I was friends with and only said it as a joke.

Also, a good way to seem older, don't let the things that are age restricted (legal wise) get to you. You can't drive? When complaining about how hard it is to get from one place to another, just say it's because you "Don't have a car. Can't afford one." People will automatically assume that that's the ONLY reason. Also, smoking and drinking, keep them in the back of your mind. I just don't do them, period. But don't make a big deal over how great it is. Most people say that the appeal of drinking goes down a lot when you're 21. Keep it casual.

And that's my secret. (still have people think i'm 23). XD

Allow me to bring up a little something here....

Just to interject my 2.5 cents....

It's all fine & dandy, good & all to dress & act older than you are.... I suppose & reckon....

HOWEVER.....

Make sure that if you choose to engage in actions with others that ARE of legal age... bear in mind that if anything happens.... they will be held responsible.....
even if they truly believe that you are older than you are.... that could have serious social, legal, and parental repercussions.....

There.... my 2.5 cents.
