Windows 7
been using the beta of it for awhile now. and i have a few things to say:
1: its pretty much Vista with a few new features on top
2: it IS faster than Vista, but not by a whole lot.
3: Compatability IS slightly more hindered than vista... specifically that you cant install non-certified drivers, which is a feature in vista.. that i got around. and by doing so allowed me to install anything.
in detail:
The whole OS seems like somone took a look at vista. and said "i can make this smoother" and did just that. icons in your task bar are hidable and work better than ever before. managing your wireless, sound, or battery (laptop) can all be done without opening a window.
Logging in is faster and the desktop boots up faster which i LOVE.
what i love even more is that i got about an extra 10-15minnutes added onto my battery life just from switching from Vista to 7.
what i DONT like is that i used to turn off a few services that cause battery life drain such as Superfetch, which is GREAT when it works right (it never worked right in Vista, i dont know if it does in 7 as its hard to tell from a user point of view) but now Superfetching service is tied together with the Readyboost feature (using a USB flash drive as your harddrive cache, which makes everything more responsive and lowers reads from your harddrive) tieing them both together i HOPE means that they fixed Superfetch, but its not guaranteed.
OH, UAC has been tweaked to be not so annoying as there are now different levels of UAC. this brings the benefits of UAC (if you accidentally run a virus, it alerts you and lets you cancel it) without annoying you unnecessarially. this will add a new level of user protection that anti-virus software just couldnt provide: the level of user awareness.
all in all its basically "Vista Plus" its better than vista, but not by much, its kinda like an expansion pack to a video game. one that makes things run better but doesnt change the core gameplay.
for the casual gamer, i would highly recommend getting it if you are using XP and have a computer that can handle it. but if you have Vista, i dont think you will really notice any change, and at many points forget that you are even using Windows 7. personally, to get me to upgrade my desktop from Vista to Windows 7, i would pay about $50. not the $130 for an upgrade edition that Microsoft will probably try to push on us. as a full OS (not upgrade) i would pay about $100 as it does offer countless advantages over windows XP.
i'm only using the beta, and from what i hear there are going to be around 50 extra features added in before its released. but from what ive seen, you can expect the most stable, secure windows release to date.

Ah, well Vista has worked for what I want it to so far so I don't think I'll run out and buy anything lol. Though couldn't you just use Torrents and cancel the auto-updates? XD Course I guess if it's just a Beta, there's bound to be random problems, of which the updates would fix, so that'd be a bad way to go..
Uhm, USB Flash Drive can be used as your harddrive cache? o.0 How do you do that? I have both a USB Flashdrive (That's the stick that can hold memory, right?), and 1 TB External Hard-drive. However if I try to "Boost performance" or whatever Vista names that option, it says it won't help/isn't compatible with boosting performance..
I'm sorry I can't remember the correct wording. I don't have either of them on me (At work) and the last time I tried was probably 2 months ago at least lol.. But I'm curious, because the way you put it, it makes sense.. May I ask what you did to configure such settings? (I'm thinking that a Cache would continue to build as you worked/played, so you'd have to delete it/empty it often, wouldn't you?)

Readyboost can only be done on a flash drive (not a USB harddrive) and it can only be done on a High-preformance flash drive.
if the flash drive is too slow, then the benefits will either be negligalbe, or worse than from the harddrive.
what it does is it caches up to 4gb of tiny files that are accessed frequently. since HDD's take longer to read small files than large ones (large files they read the quickest) by cachine those small files on the Flash drive it allows the OS to access them quicker and not cause the Harddrive to spend the time looking for that small file to read.
4gb is the max.. not sure why.

Oh, well that seems pretty specific to help it gain a bit faster.. I think I'll just upgrade or buy a better lappy (Since this one was a Pre Black Friday Sale, so I couldn't pass it up. =P) And I'll have twice the RAM, which will be much more of an improvement thatn a Flash Drive. =P
