Will solar power ever become really affordable?
I am curious to know why after all of these years large solar panels are still very expensive? Is it the material used to create them or because not as many people have them so they keep the prices high? I watched a show where a celebrity had spent $750,000 on solar panels to power his home and he said that he went from spending $37,000 per year on electricity to only $13 dollars. Even if the environment wasn't a concern I would want solar power anyway so I won't have to worry about evil corporations controlling my power

Hmm, there was a story in the newspaper here where a couple has solar panels on their roof but it was $11,000 and the government offers a rebate too. This was from an article last year in our paper.
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,20499753-910,00.html
" system prices vary greatly, although an average 10-panel system costs around $18,000, or $14,000 with the existing federal rebate."
----
Anyway I'm sure they will become more competitively priced in the near future, but that's only if more companies offer to install them. I thought they were more expensive than that actually. some people say that in winter time you'll have to use coal power (since there won't be much sun) but there's plenty of sun down here where I live lol. Maybe prices are different depending on the location. Maybe that celebrity had a massive house and wanted solar panels everywhere or something
lol, $13 a year on electricity. How good is that!

Yeah I would only use solar to power my lights and charge stuff like the cellphone and electric toothbrush I would still stick with the electric company to power everything else since it would be too expensive to be totally independent.

also it would take time for you to start earning a profit after you have installed the solar panels, from the initial cost. Reminds me of when I wanted to buy a scooter to drive into the city every day for uni, rather than catching a bus. It would work out cheaper but the initial cost was around $2000 and overall it would cost more money before I finish uni, so I stuck with the bus.

i think the one BIG reason why there has been no big leap in the field of solar panels is b/c of money the power companies have it us it to stop progress by buy any new break throws the gas companies did it A LOT when electric cars first started coming out and still do it know on a smaller scale

I´d love to lay my hands on solar panels, they look so practical. XD
Besides, there´s some trouble here concerning an "energetic crisis" and if you use more power than last year, you have to pay more next month ¬¬
As for the main topic: I hope so, but surely electric companies will do anything to stop that.

my dad sells solar panels, and he says the main reason they're so expensive is because of some of the materials used in it, i'm not sure what material it is that costs the most, but if they find a cheap way to replace it, solar energy will become cheaper...
and i thought one solar panel my dad sells would only give profit after like, 15 years or so, can't remember it correctly cause it's been a while since he sold one...

The gas companies and electric companys don't care about the enviornment just money that and there was a story about this man who had his roof covered in solar times but they only gave him enough power to boil a pot of water on his stove but the pharamacuetical companies do the same thing when finding cures for diseases they make too much money on the treatment that they don't want to find the cure so they try to stop the research to find the cure.

i don't get it though, if power companies would start investing in solar energy now, making it good and cheaper as the other companies, they'd be able to sell a lot of them and gain a lot of profit right now...

well yes they are expensive, but the technology isnt even that good yet. as of right now (as far as i know) the light to energy ratio is pretty bad. the panels only make about 15% of the light into usable electricity, so its not nearly as good as we would like it. and to get that percentage up we have to probably use a different material. soo... yeah. they arent efficiant and once they are you are gonna see prices drop and electric companies are gonna sue them prolly lol.

ehmm, i can... yeah, pretty sure i can wait...
it's a shame it's just a few people that are in charge of the current energy, it's a pitty that people with money, having the power to change the world, only care about making more money...

Hehe yeah I am really shocked at why so many people are willing to do bad things for extra money that they do not need or can easily earn the same way by helping others.
