It was called SquareSoft back then - Enix was a separate company at the time. They only merged in the last few years.

lol What is funny is Final Fantasy saved Square...who later became Square Soft when it bought out another company. Notice the "Final Fantasy Legend" series company names. Well it was a Final Fantasy Movie,Spirits within, that caused Square Soft a fincial crisis. Enix, who is famed for Dragon Quest/warrior, jumped at the chace and bought out square merging the two super giants of RPGs. Thus Becoming Square Enix we all love to trash talk when we play Final Fantasy XI online lol

Feh I wouldn't be surprised if "The Spirits within" Caused the financial crisis in square. When I watched that movie all I could think of was how boring it was, and the ending didn't make it any better. Either way, I think it was first called Squaresoft... Though I'm not exactly sure.

as was said, FF1 was their last hope for a successful game. It was a success, despite what you're all saying. And every game after that was a ssuccess as well. FFVII was just huge and made RPGs main stream, but even in Japan FF always sold well.
It was originally called SquareSoft. Enix was a company most notably known for the Dragon Quest series. The two merged to make the ultimate RPG company. Enix has also made games such as the Soul Blazer series (Illusions of Gaia, Terranigma) and mostly been the producer of many other successful games.
The FF Legend games are also known as the SaGa series but renamed FF to hopefully sell more. Final Fantasy adventure is part of the Seiken Detsu series, I believe it's called in Japan, AKA in America, Secret of Mana series.
