I'd have to say Rinoa from FF8. She can cast carbuncle, phoenix, heal spells, and her limits help the party in some positive manner. If you master Selphie's limit, however...

Define "protective". If by protective you mean the character's personality, then Kimahri would probably be number one. If by protective you mean the character's battle ability, then I would say Yuna is the most useful healing character in the FF history.

Ill say that if its for:
Protective support, is aeris with her 4th limit lol but she died...so yuna from FFx takes the lead.
Bodyguard: kimahri haha cuz steiner is too slow
Lifesaver: Zidane lol cuz he doesnt hav a reason to help some1

Yuna is a better black mage i found  she hits far more than Lulu with black magic...so i stopped using her  Aeris' healing is nothing special, and not that its needed in an easy game like FF7

For me I had most of my charcters towards the end able to heal so it was really whoever needed the healing got healed by the person whos turn it was. For me though cloud was quite helpful. with his cover and then slash all attack and if he died his final attack of pheonix since he would always be the last one to die
