What is more important in a FF game?

I reckon the story because thats what sucked me in when playing FFX. The music and battle mode were also very good.

I think storyline has to be good, allong with Character Development, and Villian Development. That's why I never really liked FFVIII, cause they spend at least 3/4 of the game, showing one, and then, the final boss is someone new, that we had no idea about. No back story for her, just threw her in there.. I found it to be kinda cheap. Yet, I liked the idea. Graphics, music, battle mode, all can be forgiven, as long as the storyline is great. That's what really matters to me.

Actually, If You Mean Ultimeca... They Do Explain A Fair Bit About Her Once She Comes Into The Picture... You May Not Have Been Paying Attention. Rolling Eyes

Okay .. the reason why I disliked 8... one word.. Odine... okay let me get this straight... a guy who is spoiler going to bring about the way that Ultimecia can go back to the past, and cause all of this havic, yet, he refuses to actually stop his research. Duh!... stop the research, and you have destroyed Ultimecia's powers... of time compression... yet... no.. he makes it out just fine... and continues on his way.. ... it's silly.

i realy think a storyline is what makes an ff, and thats really why its so diferent from other video games, without a story it really wouldn't feel like an ff.

What Ultimecia says before the final battle against her clearly explains her motives..

"Insolent fools!"

"Your vain krusade ends here, SeeDs."

"The price for your meddling is death beyond death."

"I shall send you to a dimension beyond your imagining."

"There, I will reign, and you will be my slaves for eternity.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA."
(When using Scan on her first form)
"A sorceress trying to change the world by compressing time and taking power from all sorceresses"

Quote:
the final boss is someone new, that we had no idea about. No back story for her, just threw her in there.. I found it to be kinda cheap.

Umm..it's clearly explained.
(Using Scan on her final form) "Ultimecia, transformed to absorb all time and space. Absorbing all existence as we speak."

Basically, she was born into a world where people feared and hated Sorceresses, and she decided to retaliate against the world and erase it. Then she would create a place where only SHE could live, thus perhaps becoming a god of sorts.

Anyways, Story makes the FF game, because without it, it's just..an average game.
P.S. Sorry for the long explanation.

I believe the key ingredient to any rpg is customization.

You can focus on just this and chances are your rpg will reach cult status.

Poor graphics? No prob. You'll attract MUD players anyway.

Bad Storyline/Cutscenes? No prob. The better you can customize a character, the less likely people will find fault in a bad storyline. Just asked numerous mmorpg players. No cutscenes? No prob. Just ask numerous browser mmorpg playing gamers.

No music? No prob. Set your game in a PC and the gamer can set the music in the background.

Replay value? Again, no need. The better the customization, the more unique each restart feels to the gamer even when you don't have side quests, secret endings, new game +, etc.

Basic battle system? Again, no prob. You'll attract more old school rpg fans and that's still alot of fans.

I would say it HAS to be the storyline. I wouldn't say the FF's had the best battle systems, so I maily play them for the story.
