What I'm currently reading

Hey so I'm going to make this thread for anyone who is currently reading something and wants to post a mini-reviews with minor spoilers (or no spoilers if you can help it).

I recently got a Kindle and so I have been reading a lot more. I had a bunch of e-books on my computer so I loaded them on and have been going at them.

My last book I have read so far is from a 3 part series. The first book is called the Hunger Games... Battle Royale anyone?

I have to stop now as I am leaving work very shortly. but I will do an write-up later one.

Please feel free to post what you're reading or have read recently, even interesting articles.

Cheers!

actually, would you mind a mini unbiased review on the kindle? i always wondered how it compares to a paper book, like hwow comfortable is it to hold, is it easy to read from a screen etc. i noticed that it is made for reading and isnt liek a conventional screen at least, and i was thinking of getting one for rukie some time XD

besides that, i have been going through all of the terry pratchett books lately, although for those i have been listening to audio books while at work on my generic mp3 player so i dont know if it counts, although it is unabridged so word for word, the same as the books so i think still ok for a review, just not to call it "reading"?

Kindle 3 - Wifi only; non 3G version

So far I am really liking the Kindle. You can just drag .mobi ebooks to the documents folder on the ebook. Without the wifi on lasts like a month according to Amazon. Came around fully charged and haven't really charged it. It's about a quarter way down.

The screen is amazing. If you don't know it flicks black for about half a second then loads the page. After the page is loaded it is not using any if much power at all. You need a light behind you or to be in a lit room to see the screen as there is no back light but reading from the screen itself doesn't tire my eyes.

I like that I can have a multitude of books on it as I find I like reading different things at once.

Lack of a good way to organize your books is really frustrating. Some guy made some software to help but you cannot just make folders on it in Windows and work with that.

For the money, and since I haven't tried any other e-readers out I like it a lot.

One change I would do though is that there are forward page buttons on both sides (larger buttons) I would have wanted the reverse page button on the left side to have been the larger button.
~~~~~
Audio books are fine too.
I finished reading I am Legend and I have to say the book is no where near the movie. In that I mean the two are almost not based off one another. I am Legend is a horror short (about 120 pages) and is about Vampires. The book is well written for 1954 I believe it was written and is a good read.
7 worms out of 10
~~~~~~~~~~~
Currently reading: Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events. I know teen fiction... but I always wanted to read then when I was younger. Pet Peeve of Lemony Snicket... Tell the reader the meaning of larger more complex words younger readers might not understand.... IN THE STORY!

that what i was wondering about, tiring your eyes, but no back light sounds good to me, i assume the next page is larger on both sides so you can hold it with either hand for comfortability, and it saves left handed people trouble too, that and you are gonna use next page a HELL of a lot more than last page XD
but yeah they should totalkly make one just for you and your specific needs XD

i didnt even know i am legend was a short story or book before, and yeah the movie wasnt about vampires although it was said that it was XD
but maybe i will check it out some time after that
i will never read lemony snickets though XD

Do visual novels count in the context of this topic?

Its been a very long time since I've done any reading but I've been quite gripped by a visual novel lately.

Reading the Golden Compass since I've always wanted to read these books. also going to have to pick up some H.P. Lovecraft. I have now a bunch of books on my Kindle. I need to read Brave New World and Catcher in The Rye. I want to get through Oryx and Crake by Atwood and possibly Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. The intersperced will by Lemony Snicket and Stephen King.

I can see that you have converted my old unofficial reading thread?

I have just started reading The Brothers Karamazov now that I am free from the irritating reality of my university text books. This is another book from my "I can't believe I haven't read this before" list! It's by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, so I have very high expectations from the book, I would choose Dostoyevsky over Tolstoy any day! I will let you know how it goes.

A Kindle? Really? You can't hug a Kindle the way you hug and smell a book... yea I do that lol. I never liked the idea of having an e-reader, but I started thinking about it as I have way so many books by now and it's such a pain in my back when I move from place to place. I've given most of them away but still... anyhoo, I'd give an update on this too Smile

Converted? No, more like jumped on the band wagon!

You certainly know your Russians/Eastern Europeans who have Russian sounding names.

I'm too careful with my books... I never liked breaking the spine and love reading in all manner of positions and a 900 page book is not very accommodating.

I've found that I've read more with the Kindle so I believe it to be a worthwhile purchase. There are books that I will buy on paper back over e-reader (Jordan, classics), for the classics I always want to find the oldest book I can; the ones that smell really book-like!

Not too many venture into the book forum. Arc was humoring me I'm sure, so I had kinda forgotten about this thread.

Nah I'm not that knowing of Russian writers, but I've grown to love Dostoyevsky with my recent drift towards psychological fiction. I'm on a mission in search for a novel that combines this sort of thing with the epic fantastic elements found in something like WoT. If all my attempts fail miserably, I will write one... when I'm 60!

It's unfortunate that we never went over the books that we said we're going to read a while back, so I'd like to underline the importance of posting "mini-reviews" after finishing a book Razz

High fantasy psychological thriller.... DO IT!

Don't wait till your 60! Get the basics down now. Character names, locations, back stories, your world you want to set them up in, personas, looks, mannerisums, peoples, customs, creatures, colors, smells, sights, ancient relics!

You could even flesh out the basic plot! Then you just put it aside and let it sit till you think you can do it well. You may come back and change nothing or everything!

wow lots of posts XD

lara, write that book

whoever mentioned lovecraft ~(mabus?) do it
i loved lovecrafts XD

im currently reading wintersmith by terry pratchett, its the ..4th i think in the tiffany aching young wich series (i think this book is meant for young /young adult adult girls more) but its 35 in the discworld series, so i must read all of them, also just because i think it is best read by young girls doesnt make it bad for anyone else. that and it has tiny thumb sized blue scottish fighty drinky men in it, which is always win in my book XD

if comic books count im reading megacity909, its a sci fi set in the near future, every human is inserted with a microchip to make them passive as a stop to war, the wolrd however is being invaded by psychic creatures called pulses which inhabit/posses humans, giving them extra strengh telekentic powers etc.to counter this is a team called PHOBIA who are there to stop them spreading/you know...killing people and such, there is a lot more to the plot, twists and turns but, that would be telling too much im sure XD

Yes Sirs! I will start putting down some information from now till I'm 60, then write it and get it published, and if I receive bad reviews I will do some serious killing and you guys should be ready to back me up!

I never heard of Wintersmith before, but I just checked on Amazon and people are giving it some positive reviews, I might check it out one day.

In speaking of comics, I had to read some and practice some "sophisticated" bases for designing them as a part of my university course (architecture) as they are a form of representation or something like that, some architects do it, very boring though, it sucked the fun out of comics for me!

must you wait that long?
im im ready to back uyou up *pus up the dukes* XD

well, wintersmith on its own would be ok i guess but i seriously would reccoment it is read with the previous tiffany aching books, although if i was telling you to read pratchett i would reccoment the whole discworld series, which...is a long series XD
its comedy fantasy i guess, he has also written some sci fi and other one shots, as well as his johnny series which i...dislike.
back to the point the discworld series, has a world larger than that or lotr or harry potter imo, but it has a LOT more books to work with, so when you have read a few of them you can really get into the world, races, uses of magic and science, and the reccuring characters,
the series normally is based on one thing, the wizards, and rincewind, normally ending in rincewind, a useless wizard saving the world, the city watch , which end up being crime mystery genre with all the fantasy elements keeping it awesome, or the witches, which are somewhat liek the crime mystery but much more magical, im not really good at describing things XD or a few of them are "one off" main characters/themes, still set in the same world and meeting the other characters. i just love the way the character and world evolves with you. i mean dont expect tolstoy (although im more into pratchettXD) but the book sales cant be wrong (think hes second in the uk?XD it does however make harry potter look like a twinkle twinkle XD
and theres my rant that ended upp being sorta a review
on the discworld series
i thank you
and excuse my bad typing (wors than usual) i cant see the keyboard right now, and i kinda need to , to type XD

@Arc
I have a Disc World illustrated book. Just pictures from disc world. The images were so busy it was hard to get a sense from them. A lot of stuff was going on in those, but it seemed really cool. I think the artist was Jack Kirby? Not too sure, my mom bought it, I just looked.

What is the first book to start on in Disc World?

@Lara
I'm with Arc. To be an author you have to write! I've read bios of my favourite authors and they always say, your first books are going are going to get bad reviews, you won't get called back or they won't sell. Just keep writing.

I have your back if you have to do some killing. I'll dig the holes or mixed the concrete. You'll have to do the actual killing but I'll make sure you don't get caught lol

well the first in the series i think is the colour of magic, which has a squal right after, so far i think there are just under 40 in the seriesright now, dunno how many more there will be, pratchett has a form of alzheimers affecting his sight and recognition or some such, there was a really interesting documentary on him , they do get better after havign read a few when the world is established and you know the characters and the humour, the world has its own mythologies and sciences, my favorite series.
i think tso yeah but i dont think he is artist anymore, judging by the covers, he did have a wierd style, i admit XD

and yeah you have to write get used to it practice, read lots, develop your own style and all that other generic writing advice people say xD
and i know of plenty of authers whos first or a few first books where not published BUT after they where established, those books that got rejected at first, got published and became hits XD
