meaning, they plan on offering upgraded parts down the road, this is how the PS3 plans on lasting 11 years without going to the PS4..
basicly, its turning your PS3 into a PC.. exchangable parts (better be) and new versions. with better hardware..
so the PS3 1.0 that you buy on launch, wont beable to play PS3 1.5 titles as they will require a newer model of the PS3 that contains faster/better hardware inside.
this also means that the price will go down, but only for the PS3 hardware that cant play the newest PS3 games. to get a PS3 that can play all the new games for at least 2 years you gotta buy a new PS3. (unless the games are made to be downscaled for older PS3 models. then you can play them)
essentally, like i said before, the PS3 is not an opponent to the xbox... its is an opponent to Windows and the PC gaming world. which in my mind is much smarter, becuase quite frankly, windows sucks.. the xbox is amazing, and sony discovered that with a massive fanbase they can takeover the market that got microsoft so rich... the OS and hardware platform.
This also will mean that you can BUILD your own PS3, it may cost a bit more, but it will run smoother and with better graphics. the downside is that console developers wont know what hardware every gamer will have and thus lose the benefit of having a definate hardware to work with.
if your worried about this.. dont be, i think the easiest way to describe it is this:
The PS3 is now a desktop computer that sits in your living room, it is a hardware configuration and an attack on the windows OS.
if sony can pull this off, i will be impressed, disappointed, and excited all in one.
Impressed that sony managed to do this right under microsofts nose.
disappointed that we are switching from one evil greedy company... to another evil greedy company.
and excited that linux will finally become the OS that games will be made for.
sure its sad to see that to play the newest PS3 games, you will have to buy new compatable hardware. but for the PC gamers it opens up a whole new world of gaming.

you *could* upgrade.. but undoubtably it wont be easy due to sony's over zelous copy protection.
what this means for the average PS gamer.
the newer console will make never games look better. the Massive disc storage will be primarally used to store alternative data so that new games can be compatable with older consoles.
it also means, that if a development company wanted to save some money, they could make it so that only the latest console could play the game.. OR if they wanted the largest audience available, and to still save money, they could develop the game with the original hardware in mind.
you might down the road have to check a game before you buy it to see if its compatable with your PS3 before you buy it.

hm... with all of sonys plans, backwards compatibility was always a big selling point for them. what happens when the hardware changes so much that older games are forgoten. case and point, i cant find a non-web version of scorched earth that will fun on windows xp.
god that was a sweet game
this is obviously small thing and prolly wont happen, but i worry. what if i can never play metal gear solid for the ps1 again?!?!?!
