It's not that I like staff class weapons, but I take for an example Dragon Quest 8...
The main reason was a Scepter (it looks like a staff to me).
The main villain using that staff did some cool things ... 
A staff is not a big damage dealer, but it can kick ass (not literary)

Man no way it has got to be the Darkness. I mean like imagine having the power to control the heartless. Some of those creatures are powerful and there is infinite of them, you could easily beat anyone with a measly sword or a gun.
