Weapon upgrading
Thought that we should make a thread for this. But I was only given this option an hour or so ago in the game and was going to try and see how it worked but was really in the dark. Has anyone been upgrading yet? Does it matter what you use to upgrade it with?

I've done some upgrading myself. I don't know all the details so I'll just say briefly.
As I'm sure you've noticed, you need conponments(sp) to level up. There are 2 types of conponments, organic and mechanical. It's usually obvious from the name which is which.
Organic conponents raise the exp multiplier, but gives a low amount of exp. Mechanical conponments lower the exp multiplier but give a good amount of exp in return.
With this in mind, the general strategy is to start by using low exp organic conponments until you get a good bonus (either x2 or preferably x3), then use some mechanical conponments (use several at a time as you'll find the exp bonus goes down quite quickly).
Each piece of equipment has a level cap which depends on the rank(?) of the item. When an item gets to this limit it becomes LVL * (star). At this point, you will be able to dismantle at max efficiency.
As for what you start with, it doesn't really matter, but it's worth noting that a lvl 5 weapon you got at the start of the game will be stronger stats-wise than lvl 1 weapons you get midgame. So I would advise to start with upgrading a basic weapon, then wait til later on when you get a lot of conponments and a much better weapon to repeat the process.

I am glad that you created this topic Stappy as I was going to research this info myself. I am also afraid to use too many items on my current weapon in case a weapon that is a lot better with default stats comes along soon. I do notice that if you go back towards the beginning of the map the enemies respawn and sometimes drop good items to upgrade your equipment.

I've tried upgrading both weapons and accessories. Only upgraded two weapons this far, but once you get the hang of it, it's really... well, not a lot of fun, but interesting.
I upgraded a Spark Ring... changed the 20% lightning defence to 22% xD
I'm pretty sure there's more stategic ways of upgrading your weapons compared to what I've done, though I believe I have a x2 upgrade-experience bonus on both weapons right now.

Not at the moment... My Gladius (one of Lightning's gun-blades) have reached level 4, but my current guess is there's about 10 levels for each upgradable item.
I can't even remember if the in-game Tutorial specified any number of levels, though... Hmmm...

Like I said, the level cap varies. My Silver Bangle only went up to level 6, while my Tungsten Bangle went to level 11.
I just upgraded Gladius to the max, it's max level is 26 (175 strength, 88 magic)

OK, I've found out some more about upgrading when I was doing optional stuff.
When you get a piece of equipment to max level, you can use a certain mineral which will allow you to upgrade that into the next higher up piece of equipment. This will vary depending on the equipment. When you do upgrade like this, the level and stats will lower slightly, however the level cap is increased allowing you to boost the stats even more.
When upgrading to the highest tier, you will need to use an item called Trapezohedron. You can get these for a mere 2 million gil at R&D depot shop. To unlock that shop you need to complete mission no. 7 with the Ci'eth stones. Please don't ask me how to get that much, I haven't done this step yet.
My upgrades so far:
Silver Bangle-> lvl 6 (star)
Tungsten Bangle -> lvl 11 (star)
Gladius -> lvl 26 (star)
Gladius -> Helter-skelter (lvl 19 i believe)
Helter-skelter -> lvl 61 (star)
Hawkeye -> lvl 26 (star)
Hawkeye -> Eagletalon (lvl 13 i think)
Eagletalon -> lvl 61 (star)
Taming Pole -> lvl 26 (star)
Taming Pole -> Venus Gospel (lvl 19 i think)
Venus Gospel -> lvl 61 (star)

I am still afraid to upgrade until I find an item with really good default stats and/or additions. It is easy to waste a lot of "hard to get" items on upgrades.

Best weapon for Lightning is the Organyx (I believe it is called). Since I preordered the game it came with a mini strat guide. It contained one page for Lightning's weapons.
Attack/Magic (Organyx is strongest and says it can be purchased from Gilgamesh Inc (a shop I don't have yet for 280,000). but it is slowest for attack speed. Lightning's weapons all end with Omega Weapon no matter how you level it (only 3 different variations). Her first blade is not bad and gives good magic. The Gladius doesn't give any magic but does have a decent attack.
Didn't know about the organic thing concerning ex multiplier.
Lightnings swords (first form, like Blazefire and Gladius) star at either Lv. 26 or Lv. 21, then the next versions star around 60 I believe and the final form (which is Omega for all of them, is LV. 100).

For any parts concerns.
Creature Comforts- sells organic conponments
Lenora's Garage- sells weak mechanical conponments
The Motherlode- sells transform minerals.
R&D Depot- sells the really good mechanical conponents and transform minerals (expensive)
The Ultracompact reactor costs 50,000 gil, and gives an average of 40,000 exp WITHOUT EXP MULTIPLIER. Make the multiplier x3 and now you are getting 120,000 exp per UR.
The first 3 shops I mentioned are obtained during the story if I remember right.
With regards to base stats, there is little difference at level 1, it's when you upgrade and transform where you really see the difference. Even then, there are auto-abilities to think about.

If youre intrested... when you get to Hopes home... you can spend some time here with easy to kill, easy to respawn, fights. Alot of people prolly figured this would be a good place to level up, but I actually stuck around there for a different reason. Every one of the enemies has a chance to drop an incentive chip, or phoenix down. Phoenix downs sell for 500 gil each, and the chips are worth 2500. You can also get aura's, and since you can buy components at this point in the game, you could spend some time here grinding mentioned items to sell, then buying up items for upgrading.
Personally, I use the sturdy bones, which cost the same as everything else in creature comforts, but offers 21 exp per item, to get my multiplier up to level 3, then I unload with turbojets. Just a bath of turbojets and sturdy bones, bought with 6 chips, is enough to boost the gradius from level 4 to 16. Also Id suggest boosting up your brawlers wristband and a power wristband for your commando's. Brawler wristband maxes is strength at +120, and the power wristband at +60 strength.
Also a it seems that around 25 or so sturdy bones will max out your multiplier.
Hope this helps

I got my first trapezohedron a few hours ago (thank you adamantortoise!). I wanted to get my first ultimate weapon fully upgraded first do decided not to do the dupe trick. Dang, do these ultimate weapons take a while to upgrade. I'm up to level 94 now and I've spent like 800k upgrading this one so far.....
