The reason for Rikku mixing trio of 9999 is because of what it does. It makes your characters do 9999 damage/healing minimum provided they can at least do 1 damage (still does 0 if your characters were going to do 0). Because of this, a 12 hit attack reels (2-2-2) does 12*9999=119988 damage, while blitz ace does 9*9999=89991 (though this is reduced vs. Dark Bahamut/Dark Anima

There are other ways to beat Evrae, in my NSGNSNCNO file (No Sphere Grid, No Summoning, No Customising, No overdrives), I just used a few smoke bombs to evade the attacks and using any other items (if you're short on items, steal in the airship).

Evrae has also been beaten in an NSGNSNCNI file by a few on Gamefaqs. I stopped that file just before the first Seymour (got bored hunting for an SOS Overdrive weapon for Rikku)

Honestly i really dont think that its possble to beat the game without the spheregrid. my first time playing i didnt read the tutorial and i was lost. I skipped over important things on the grid like attack adn magic. I got as far as beating seymour the second time with auron hp in the 2000's! it was sad i had to play all over again but it was worth it.

I managed Macalania without it. I got as far as Evrae. If I had an item called the hourglass to slow Evrae down I could have got past there aswell.

You have a long way to go then. It doesent really get going for no sphere grid till after the blitzball tournament. Make sure you pick up the overdrive energy blast for valefor.

When you have to leave Besaid to head for the ship go back into Besaid. It should be given to you by someone in the tent to the right of the temple. If not it may be in the item shop because I think the place can change.

The main ones are:
2*Wings of Discovery/Doors To Tomorrow
Lvl 3/4 key sphere+ Wings To Discovery/Doors To Tomorrow/Gambler's Spirit/Underdog's Secret
Dark Matter+Bomb Core/Arctic Wind/Lightning Marble/Dragon Scale? (not too sure on last 3)

To get Energy Blast, head into Besaid immediately after leaving it the first time. Talk to the girl who serves you in the item shop. She will mention her dog found something. Go to the top right shelter and "speak" to the dog.

You actually use magic surprisingly little in No Sphere Grid. I would only use cure outside of battle and only black magic against the very early elementals/flans. As for doubling HP, it's not needed in a basic NSG, but useful for some variations.
