Haha
most of the deaths in battle are because of soldiers' wounds are too severe..therefore, dying in battle is usually caused by wounds...
So it make sense that soldiers who are wounded are actually dying......if they're not, why do soldiers die coz of their wounds?..
Anw...the spell is named "death, but if you read its description, it states "instally knock off an opponent"..

Even though they say that the Phoenix downs only revive KO people, but like still, in battle you take some serious hits, more then Sephiroth done too Airith. And you only get KO. So yeah, theres my verdict.
