I vote for FFVII of course.
FFVII is the ultimate FF game ever made. FFVII would probably give you a better idea of the series in general since VIII has a very different magic and summon system to the others, which affects the gameplay (in battle at least) quite considerably. It had the best graphics for it's time and it was fun to play, more than VIII.
Also the characters in VII are better with better stories, none of the characters in VIII are that good.
I would say that VII is better gameplay, but the story is better in ffVIII, the storyline in VII drags a little in the first disc and doesn't really pick up unto right at the end of the first disc

not really, because I play the games more for the stories than the actual playing part, they're both good, but the story is better. i hate playing good games with no or rubbish storylines

I think you're trying to say the other way around, but in any case the storyline in FFVIII is not bad at all (they have fair ratings, only 0.5 below FFVII's).

yeah it's good - i think they're all awesome, but ffviii had me on the edge of my seat all the time
