Which Final Fantasy Battle System is the best?
I don't know if this topic has been posted but this question of mine triggered right after I played FFXII. I find FFXII's battle system pretty interesting, in fact better than the other two previous battle systems (Active Time Battle - ATB, Conditional Time Based - CTB)...and I started to dislike random battles for some reasons.
You can check this wiki page for more info on which game of FF uses what type of battle system: Final Fantasy Battle Systems
Its pretty strange, I've been looking high into random battles from the day I started my first FF game and now I'm hating it lol. Why I think random battles suck? Cuz it gets really annoying when the monsters are at low level jumps out at ya especially when you're looking for a way out or something inside a dungeon. And something like this:
squallpayne: "Oh boy oh boy, I'm almost near to that PRECIOUS treasure chest! Yipp...huh?"
*Random battle BGM + screen fades, breaks, whatever*
In Real Time Battle (RTB), like in most MMORPGs including FFXI and FFXII...you can avoid contacts with monsters on the field when you are set on doing something else...like finding a more specific target, treasure, getting into a place in a hurry, etc. Ah, reminds me of another annoying thing abt random battles...when it involves TIME COUNT. When there's countdown and your characters are supposed to reach somewhere in time, imagine getting each 5 secs a random battle and the countdown still runs even during battles.

i always liked the ATB, it makes the game seem more realistic. But i'm biased, I fell in love with VIII because it was my first game i ever played

It depends what mood I'm in but I really like the Real Time battle systems... especially FFXII because of the whole hostile/docile monster setup

I prefer ATB for one reason and one reason alone. The surprise. Yes, it is nice that you don't just randomly run in to monsters when you are in a hurry with the RTB, but I always am kind of surprised when I'm running to this city to heal, and I have to make one last ditch effort to make it all the way there.
I feel like they just made a way to get through the game easier with the RTB. I personally got bored with it very quickly, no surprise.
I have personally never tried CTB, so I have no opinion on it.

im loving ff12's battle system, so free flowing and doesnt get irritating like the other ones when you are trying to travel a large distance and go through what seems to be a million changes of screen to battles.

CTB (conditional time based) is the one used in FFT (FF tactics) and FFX. The battle are decided by characters' attribute mainly affected by their SPD stats (those wif high SPD or AGI) gets their turns faster. Kinda surprised nobody voted for that one, which was my 2nd most fav battle system.

Well... being a larger lover of FFX I have always considered the CTB-system of that game as the 'true' (at least to me) system... But I've grown to like the RTB-system of FFXII, so it's a tie between the two.
