...note that it's really inconvenient synthesizing ethers and buying tents to refuel Stiener's mp since shock takes up 42mp, i suggest sticking to Freya's Dragon's crest (-16mp) and Zidane's Thievery (-8mp)...
...I still dont see how people prefer garnet over Eiko since Eiko has 'Dispell' which is one of the best skills you can learn...

it wasn't the healing they both used different summons and back then I loved just using magic casters if I played it now i would probably have Freya instead of one of the healers

As for Flare Star, you're thinking of FF VIII. You can summon them when the character has thier turn which reduces their MP.

*Zidane's quick speed could sometimes benefit defencively by using potions/items.
**Garnet is only pure defence if you play the quick way since her summons take way too long.

ey up, thats an easy question! i just go with whoever I want to! in the end i chose Zidane(duh), Vivi, Steiner, and eiko. I only chose vivi because he has a cool hat though . being able to cause more than 9999 damage in one turn helped too. Same with eiko.
