I think it doesn't really matter wether you want to call her Aerith or Aeris...Aeris is the japanese pronounciation, and it's because the japanese language has no sound which comes close to TH...for example, the name of the series Death Note is pronounced as Desu Nōto IN JAPANESE. So, Aerith's name is pronounced as Earisu IN JAPANESE

Mmm...I don't think so...because in the international phonetic alphabet, the θ(e.g. th in thing) sound doesn't include the t sound...if you were to pronounce it Earitsu in japanese, that would be like Aerits in english... I mean, it's not accurate, that short explanation comes from my studing English and using the IPA some times to improve my pronounciation ^_^'. I hope it helps

Heh...not exactly...if you look for Aeris Gainsborough on wikipedia, you'll find that Aerith is the correct pronounciation, the correct name, it's just that Japanese people are not used or can't pronounce TH, that's why they say Earisu instead of Aerith. Another example, if you have seen Yami no Matsuei, the main character Tsuzuki says something like sankyu and that's his pronounciation to say thank you; or if you have seen Death Note, Light's(Raito pronounced in japanese) sister says tankyu to say thank you...so it's just a matter of pronounciation, a bit weird and troublesome for people like me who don't know how to speak japanese but listen to it in some series.
...If someone here knows how to speak japanese, that would be helpful ^_^'
