I agree with DC, donīt waste your time in Red Mages until you master, at least, black/time magic or summons... So you can use X-Magic with strong magics, like Meteo or Flare...
Anyway, in the second wave you couldnīt get that shard, and the tower sunk... Youīll be able to get it later in the game ^^

hahaha yeah i got really worried when i cant get the other shard and to tell you the truth i even reset the game even though i lvl up a lot...

Remember, with Normal/Freelancer class, all passive abilities that mastered classes have with zero ABP, and all of the highest stats from mastered classes, are
brought into the normal/freelancer.
For fighters, master ninja for speed and mostly for dual-wield, monk for max stats in strength and vitality, hunter/ranger for RapidShot, and Mystic Swordsman for Mystic Sword. Of course, most of these should be mastered near the end, as there is an area which gives you tons of ABP. I do reccomend getting dual-wield early, though....
In the GBA version, at least, Mimics can hold three abilities...so that's what this is based on. If that's not the case for your version, get white magic and doublecast for a normal/freelancer.
For mages, master White Wizard for healing and later for attack magic (Holy can actually be more powerful than Flare, for less MP cost), summoner for...well, they just work really well against the last boss and some strong monsters, and also give you high INT, and Red Wizard for Doublecast. I'd say you should level up white and black magic for mages earlier on, as summons are pretty darn weak until way later on into the game, and black magic is the dominant attack magic until then as well.
Well, that's my advice....

I mostly agree with Xetaīs post... Black magic is one killer weapon at the start, and unless you get Golem or Leviatan, or that level summons, Summoner isnīt really useful. Time mage is a cool class too, since it has Haste, Quick, and Comet/Meteo, all three useful magic.
In the SNES version I played, Mimic has three abilities also, and Mimic as the default command. So, if the stat bonus for Freelancer also affects Mimic, it makes it the best overall class.
For Gust: The second shard is obtained in the final world, using the submarine. (I wonīt say more than that  )

The best mage class, at least in the GBA version. Still don't know a thing about the other versions, but in the GBA version, Mimics can inherit powers from other classes like the freelancer, but can only wield certain weapons, including staffs and rods. So in order to be powerful fighters, they have to have at least one ability for holding advanced weapons, and even then will only be limited to one powerful weapon type. Besides, a fighter would not be using "mimic" too often, as he/she would be the strongest damager in the group, and should be using RapidShot fueled with FlareSword instead of copying some weak summon or spell, or some healing spell on the party which had already been cast by a mage so that it is unnecessary to cast it again.
So, you just have to remember that there is nothing in FFV worth using more than a Flare-Fueled Rapidshot with superweapons like excalibur and the chicken knife (YES, that is a super-weapon! And no, you don't run away if you only use RapidShot!), in terms of hurting someone.
Hey, maybe you have a reason of your own. I haven't figured one out yet.
Oh, and by the way, I don't use Time Magic. The attack spells are way too random to rely on in an important battle, and cost a lot of MP at that as well. As for the support spells, they only give you a boost in combat and aren't necessarily essential. But if doublecasting Holy works better in a battle than any doublecasted summons, you might want that instead of summoning. Just seems like too much extra class-mastering for too little benefit for me to pursue.

The difference between Holy and a good summon (Bahamut or Leviathan) is that it only affects one enemy, and since when you mimic you donīt waste MP (only the first time), the most killer weapon is this, at least against Neo-Exdeath... Omega is weak to lightning... So using X-Fight and enhance your weapon with Bolt 3 (Mystic Knight) makes the fight easier (but I couldnīt beat him yet at my puny level of 41)
About Shinryuu... Dragoons are the best weapon... Since while jumping he canīt hit you, but you need the best of luck to beat him... And some good things...
And yes... The mimic can equip some specific weapons... But he has 3 commands AND mimic...
