You can stop your characters from attacking by pressing one of the shoulder buttons, I think it was L2... but try 'em all just incase I've forgot the right one ^^;

Yeah thats what the walkthrough told me (Had some trouble with the mines) since normally you wouldn't be strong enough for that fight it was a better idea to just run back to the entrance
