Vista
I'm writing the Software'd and Hardware wars columns, i promise that march there will be an issue. they are going to be a complete coverage of Microsoft Windows Vista, and i was curious to if any of you had any questions about vista. any tests that you want me to run. any curiosities that you have.

i can try, but i dont have a DX10 video card or a DX10 game. so i can test DX9 games =)
any specific ones?
im running out of time because its starting to become Finals week at my college so i have other papers i have to write. >.<
worst case senario, i just post one of my papers. (one on Network Security that i already wrote.. halfassed. the other due in 1.5 weeks on 32bit processors vs 64bit processors)
i really dont want to delay it any more. i feel like an untrustable loser if i promise it on vista and cant deliver.
would be odd if one of my teachers find it and think i plagurized a guy online named "Thorlord"
wonder how that conversation would go: "But IM Thorlord!"

I've got a brand new laptop that came with Vista on it, and for gaming... Any games that need DX9, you can download 9, and it will run with DX10 still... For example: EverQuest runs with DX9, my laptop that has Vista came with DX10, so if I'd download DX9, Vista would still work fine because it doesn't get rid of DX10, and EQ will run DX9 when started up... The computer should choose which DX to run when starting an application. Make any sense?

um dude...
DX10 runs DX9 games.
Windows XP has DX9.0c
Windows Vista has DX10 and DX9.0L
L is an advanced and redesigned DX9 compatability that the game Halo 2 will be using. (which means that it only runs on Vista despite it using DX9)
even though you have a DX10 operating system. you cannot play any DX10 games, only DX9 games. because your video card lacks DX10 compatibility (especially since its a laptop and no DX10 laptop video cards exist)
i will say that DX9.0L does have a few problems with DX9.0c games. for example Halflife 2 engine has memory leaks in DX9L which makes it crash after an hour of playing (some games based on HL2 crash after a few minnutes *coughDarkMessiahofMightandMagicCough*
While some have claimed that DX9c Games do look better in DX9L environment, it is a proven FACT that DX9c games do NOT run as good in an DX9L environment.
i myself have come onto a problem, while DMoMaM crashes every few minnutes, its addictive as crap and i play it. its crashed over 70 times now and im on the last chapter of the game. but i have found a new problem. now my other DX9.0c games are starting to crash as well with the same memory leaking problems.

Oh... Well, my laptop was saying that DX9 was not installed on the computer. Anyways, so far, I haven't had any problems with DX9 and DX10 on there... Overall, I'm satisfied with Windows Vista.

On a related note:
I got a Dx10 video card today...
well I dident, my dad did,
since i have Vista, and he doesnt. we are going to switch video cards until he DOES get vista (which is when DX9 games dont run like a Darrahieac Monkey hopped up on ritalin and mango juice, so about in a year)
i currently have:
ATi x1900xtx 512mb GDDR3
i will trade my dad for his GeForce 8800GTS 312mb GDDR3
yes, less video memory, but overall preformance increase if playing DX10 enabled games.
when i trade him back. i will sell my X1900xtx and hopefully by then the ATi HD2900 will be out.
either way, i can play DX10 games now.. so give me a game, ill play it and let you know how impressed im with it.

cool news:
were building a PC for a friend of ours, and my dad says i should put the x1900xtx into his system rather than his.
i brought up that it would then make it impossible for us to switch back when he got vista.
he then said "well, since you did do that work for me last week, then i guess you get to keep the 8800"
awesome. free upgrade for spending 30 minnutes moving siding from the backyard to a pile 50 feet away.
