Vista vs XP
I was wondering if anyones found any games that aren't compatible with Vista. Just bought myself a new laptop with vista home basics and i'm kinda worried.

Any game that was made with windows 98 and lower wont work. (as some did work with XP, they wont work in Vista)
so DirectX 7 and lower.
any game that uses an older installer that does not conform to some standards of installation.
the list is random at the moment, its game compatability isint perfect, and you will find that many games are still playable, but dont run as well or have problems at certian points (or even crash more often)
when DirectX10 becomes more popular, you will find that those problems will vanish.

If you ask me, I prefer XP because I've read that Vista isn't so stable and that it can crash. people are selling computer who don't support Vista, but they say that it does. But everything is ok as long as it works on your computer.
P.S. many programs and games won't work on Vista. That's why I prefer XP

I'm running Vista Home Premium atm, and it seems to work just fine for me. 64 bit, dual core processor, 120GB Hard Drive, 1GB DDR2 Ram... I've got EverQuest running on it as well as WoW... Both run smoothly. There are however, a few crashes here and there, but it's very random, and happens maybe like once every 2-5 hours... Not a big deal really. Like Thor said. Once more people start using DX10, those problems will disappear. Hope this helps... Oh. I've also got Stronghold Legends on my computer which is the same thing basically as Stronghold Crusader... Not sure that matter though cuz it's not really online.

well, i broke down, reformatted my hardrive, and reinstalled XP. Vista was taking so long booting, as well as performance issues with the games i know i should be able to play. I shaved 24 processes and regained 30 gig! now I'm running faster than ever!

All tho i dual boot vista ultimate and XP i generally use Xp. Until they work out the bugs on vista xp just runs my games better, and most of my programs. I have a crack for games like halo 2 which is supposed to be just on vista but u can crack direct x and easily get it running on xp, it performs better as well.
Eventually i will move to Vista as my full time os but i will probably always keep a copy of xp either around or dual booted for the sake of something stable.

You do know Thorlord that you can chose (just like in xp) to run a program as tho it was out of xp or even 98? If not ill see if i cant drum up the how to on it. This is available in Vista as well, you can run programs in XP mode. I might go with a MAC tho and Parallels.

the compatability mode is not a 100% emulation of the previous operating systems, it rather will limit your current hardware emulating something less powerful in hopes that will run the program.

This is true, all tho in vista they do have to set some sort of emulation for the lower versions because of how different the OS's are. I find it has about 80% of the time it helps run the game.
