Visiting the Past: The Vietnam War

From a previous topic, someone once said that they heard (made sure to include that in order to avoid confusion) that the US did a crime against Vietnam during it. Granted there were a few isolated events in which the troops, either by paranoia or anger, attacked any Vietnamese they saw. (anyone may contest this if they will) But the US DID enter the Vietnam War with a good reason in mind: to protect a little country that was being opressed.
At this time, Vietnam was not one country, but instead it was seperated into what was called North Vietnam and South Vietnam. As they developed, North Vietnam became a communist country and gained a dictator. When they asked South Vietnam to join and become one country again, as it had been at one time, South Vietnam declined, but that wasn't good enough for North Vietnam. North Vietnam sent troops and began to use force to try and make South Vietnam become unified.
The United States, at first, would not stand for this, so we sent our troops over there to help the poor, defenseless South Vietnam.
What is said is true: the fighting WAS brutal, it WAS a bloodbath. North Vietnam solders attacked at random times and the US troops had to always be on alert. The US suffered a few big blows, but overall, we were winning by a mile.
Unfortunately, that isn't what the media back home said. This was the first war that the people back home actually got to see videos of and they were appalled at the bloody violence. This sturred up many anti-war groups who thought that we should "give peace a chance". Not knowing, or perhaps not caring that peace for us would mean that South Vietnam would be massacred. The public of the US became more and more angry about the war until the next presidential election came up. When it did, one candidate promised them peace. That candidate was voted in, and we withdrew. We had already started training South Vietnamese soldiers so that they could fight for themselves, but there had not been enough time to do much, nor did they have our weapons and numbers.
When we withdrew, the results were not suprising. Very quickly, South Vietnam was forced to surrender.
So, people have pointed the finger at the US saying: You screwed up Vietnam!
I say: No. But we did screw up. We did so when we became so cowardly that we would not stay and protect those innocents that were in South Vietnam. When we "gave peace a chance" at the cost of the freedom and lives of many of the South Vietnamese.
I will admit, my view of this is VERY biased.
Your views will be very appreciated.
BUT, I cannot see how that defending a small and defenseless country was a bad thing.

I think war is repulsive. I don't care who's in it and what its over.

Just because a country has more guns doesn't mean its point of view is better.

I understand that and agree. BUT! The North Vietnamese were the ones trying to force their point of view at gunpoint! It was the US that was trying to defend South Vietnam and allow them to have a point of view.
Anyone who thinks that all things can be solved through deplomacy obviously thinks too highly of humankind.
