video memory question

Uh. I have no idea when it comes to computers so I need some help. I'm looking at a laptop to buy and one I've found has good specs needed for some softwareprograms I want to run. like 100GB memory, 2 GHz processor, 1GB ram. But the video memory is 'shared'. I asked the guy at the store and he said you can set how much of he ram is dedicated to video memory. Which sounded alright but I forgot to ask about shading etc, so if some programs require this will it still work? All the spec sheet says is 'shared memory' so I was wondering if anyone here could help me.\
