Yeah, that's exactly who I was referring to.
My suggestion is to go back to The Archylte Steppe and start up some of the sidequests, or wherever you stopped doing the sidequests. You might spend quite a while doing optional stuff just to beef up for that fight. Also, after he killed me a few times I decided I'd equip some fire resistance right? to survive the giant fire attack. Don't do that. Later in the fight he has some carbon copies of that attack that are different elements...

i know, he use the ice one on me as well so i wised up after that and my party have a random assortment of fire eater/ice eater and all purpose magic resistance equipped, but i did what you just said and did a few cie'th stone missions and i'm working my way back up the tower again

Hmm, I never tried Fog because the first time I ran into it, an enemy casted it and it lasted a whopping 2 seconds, so I figured the player casted one was the same.
