Useful Free Software
I think a list is needed, Freesoftware that should be had by all: some of these are common sense, but a list is always helpful to those who are looking.
GIMP (free Photo Editor)
Open Office.org (Alternative to Microsoft Office applications like Word, or Excel, still compatable with those file formats)
Firefox (Free Web Browser, more secure and faster than IE)
ThunderBird (Free E-mail alternative to Outlook, much faster)
CCleaner (very quickly removes clutter from your computers, also finds errors in the registry)
Spybot Search and Destroy (a fast way to get rid of spam/adware and even has a feature to immunize your system too)
Sygate Personal Firewall (Very good firewall)
AVG Antivirus (Free Antivirus that is kind on system resources and is still powerful, updates often with new definitions)
i was going to also recommend Ewido's free version, but it was recently acquired by AVG (also, Norton got ahold of Sygate, i hope you can still get the sygate standalone version as Norton uses quite a bit of system resources)
Please if you know anymore let me know and ill add them to the list.
i WOULD recommend winRAR but it bugs the crap out of you until you upgrade.

I was gonna say winACE, cause it supports almost all types of compression (.zip, .rar, .ace many others I have never seen)
It's pretty good, but a screen always comes up that "bugs the crap out of you" so I dunno. I use it and the evaluation never runs out! I'm on day 376 of 60!

7zip is a good alternative that is free and has no nag. Not quite as powerful in some respects, but it can handle zip, rar, etc.

Well...
I think some things are essenial for me anyway.
DivX (for video files that don't play for some reason lol)
WinRAR (it's essential for unzipping files.)
xviD (it's divx backwards, lol, but works for some video files that otherwise don't work)
AC3 Filter (I have no idea what this does, something with the sound for video files)
And another good one for stopping spam emails before they even reach your junk email folder, lol is
Blue Frog It works with Gmail, hotmail and yahoo mail.

Hey The Stapler I was going to add Winrar and Xvid to that list but you beat me to it I highly recommend those programs as well. All of those are good free programs, but if you don't mind paying I would recommend Norton Ghost for backups.
Norton Ghost completely saves EVERYTHING on your PC is if time has frozen for your PC. Whenever my PC acts weird, I simple restore my Ghost backup and everything is exactly the way I left it when it was working. Makes life so much easier

If your looking for Fansubs of popular anime and dont want the whole bitTorrent dealie (I use YetABC [Yet Another BitTorrent Client]), than Bearshare is the way to go! Way better than Limewire, it pwns Limewire! no joking!
