There's no mention of it on the Wikipedia entry for FF IX, and I'm certain that it's not in any of the earlier games either.

yea u can play 2 player on ff9 but only in a battle. just assign a character to a controller. its very complicated when the batteries die in a controller, but its still fun

I have done 4 playthroughs with various people, playing Co-op for the entire game. Once with my brother, once with my room mate, once with my dad, and once with one of my friends. 
In my personal opinion the game is 10x more fun when you play it co-op.

It does, which is where the cooperation comes into play. The two players need to communicate their plans and actions to each other in order to effectively defeat an enemy. However, at least in my opinion, this makes the game much more interesting and entertaining.
I just wrapped up yet another playthrough with my brother, and dealing with Necron and Hades was quite a blast. We've yet to tackle Ozma, but I'm sure that will be some serious fun.
Honestly the co-op feature is what makes me really like FFIX, but, as a fanboy of co-op play in general, there's no way I could put a game with it down.

i would have liked to have tried the co op play , i play now and again with my brother but since he moved it was harder to do , he has moved bac for a while though with his wife staying down the street (financial reasons) so perhaps i can try to get him into this XD
