Egh, Light couldn't win because he was too arrogant, and strategized a little too much. Selecting someone with initiative, then telling this person to sit on his hands was a surefire disaster. Nevermind what a pathetic god he was. His whole strategem with Takada was to sacrifice her to get rid of Mellow. I've looked back in my old mythology and even the nastiest gods would go out of their way to save their faithful at least once in a while.

Look at the mistakes he made in the very beginning. When confronted by the fake L, Light gives in to temptation and kills him. If he was serious about building such a great world, he wouldn't have wasted his time fighting the cops and killing those who challenged his authenticity. Early on, he expressed a concern for the safety of his family, and later he considers slaying his sister and stays his hand only to protect himself. Afterwards, he sends his own father to die. He was never that great to begin with, and he degenerates into a capricious monster. Had it coming.

I totally agree with you Light was way too arrogant for his own good but anyone who has a god complex tends to be arrogant. He was that way before he got the notebook which gave the book the ability to take control of him and twist his mind even further, but it all really stems down to being Ryuk's fault because he brought the book to the human world to begin with just because he was bored. He put his family in danger because he only cared about his views and it shows when he tells Matsuda that his father was a fool then goes as far to say that Soichiro wasn't even his father.

To put it all on Ryuk is a little harsh. Even though he is ambivalent about the lives of humans in general, from his perspective there is little reason to care. To his kind, humans are a means to sustaining their own lives, bad for us. But because they have no emotional investment, they only prey on humans as needed.

Even though the way the Death Note universe works hints at a sort of predestination, all humans make their own moral choices. It's easy to avoid temptation when it's too far out of the way, but when it's dropped in your lap... That is when one discovers the kind of person they really are.

Heh, Light was an ace student, a brilliant mind. Ever noticed that it's those who put their own intellects on a pedestal who screw things up the most?

Yeah, they sell The Death Note manga with the cover exactly the same as the death note. Well, I touched it, but the only thing I saw is the shopkeepers face with those weird glasses. Laughing

And then I wrote my name on the manga, well its mine so I must write my name...and Shocked
*URGH* *ARGHHHHH* *fainted while holding chest*

p.s: Shinigami does take appearance like a regular shopkeeper...and they wore glasses. Laughing

You're absolutely right Boogie the so called "Intellectuals" are the ones who end up wrecking everything but they're the ones who will inevitably lead everything and while I don't put it all on him it technically is his fault because he brought the notebook to Light but in reality its all Light's fault.

No, I think it was the writer's fault. Light should have one. End of story(well, the story would end after it shows me killing Light and taking control of the global empire).

That's not to say that the Death Note could never have been used for a more positive end. One thing I do like is that the series raises the question of killing, what meaningful limits, and who does it.

Yes, and it also makes certain people uncomfortable too, just arguing about it. Some people are even made out to look stupid because they end up enforcing the opinions they have so strongly, even though they had been against Light, that they would kill to uphold them.

Well I'm a firm believer that death is just an easy way out if you kill a criminal he won't have to face what he did I say bring back the tower of london treatment for criminals the judicial system is too soft on them they're more likely to be reformed if they're only given stale bread and stagnant water for their sentence or even tossed into a torture chamber...ahem sorry about that once I start on a tangent its hard to stop

I'm more of a believer in the Charles Bronson/Death Wish style towards killing: Don't make it too personal, just be quick, merciless, and stoic. It's like killing bugs, kill 'em all or what's the point?

On the other hand, I'd like to think that at least a handful could be reformed and live the rest of their lives without hurting another human being. Frankly, if you put a real lowlife right in front of me and an assurance I wouldn't do time for doing the deed... I'd be hesitant about doing it. There's a chance that I might not do it at all, I fear that the mentality required to kill is counterintuitive to the kind of world I'd like to see. Then again, just because I am loathe to do it, I don't want the scumbags to know that. Never let your enemies know what you won't do.

Yes but whats the point in killing a criminal if they get a painless and merciful death and they even get an expensive and hot last meal you might as well put them in the penthouse at the Plaza Hotel whats worse is that they still get congual visits so what kind of punishment is it really when you think about it our society is too easy on criminals

Yet again, I fully agree with Tifa. (This makes the third big topic)

Criminals should suffer. Put em in jail, but with no food or water. Or give em garbage.

On one side, keeping them locked up in prison is just a big time-out. They have meals, bed, friends... It's like being grounded with friends and having a recess... That's not a punishment. And what's worse, we get punished too. We have to pay taxes to fund their meals, heat, ect.

On the other side, killing em gets rid of them. They are no longer a threat, and are permenatly out of our hair. One bullet is very cheap.

I say we torcher criminals to death. Use "Saw" as inspiration for the really bad guys. Then whips, cutting, salt, ect for everyone else. Have fun tortureing evil, then dispose of it. Inexepensive, easy/fun, sends out more of a message.
