This is serious but doesn't sound that way...Z-day may be closer
So I recently read an article which might not be 100% refutable based on its source page but I've looked into it and it is pretty genuine...Scientists have found and seem to be playing with a "zombie gene" in caterpillars...
There are fungi whose spores attach and grow in ants. These fungi eat the ants inside out and sprout of of their exoskeletons. What's worse is that during the process, the ants go crazy, but the fungi doesn't destroy the part of their brain that makes them return to the colony (so it can infect more). These ants now know to take their infected friends and discard them far away.
Generally, things like this has happened biologically.
But for this case, I'd say the conclusion for that article is way into a slippery slope. A caterpillar's CNS is way too simple.
here are some examples of natural parasites infecting and "taking over" caterpillars.
So please, people, don't let the conclusion of an escapist magazine article (when it's not about games [anime reviews are terrible too]) get to you too seriously.
I'm more concerned that they're playing with it, I know that there are other organisms that do the same thing. Scientists tend to stick their...extremities...in things they don't understand (and it's russian roulette)...I also understand that it might not happen with the caterpillar...but it doesn't mean they won't try to synthesize a stronger version.
oh! and there's that parasite, too!
A rabbit eats a grass with an infected ant on it and the parasite matures in the rabbit's digestive track. the rabbit's feces contain parasite eggs with the ants come across just from being on the ground. the parasite goes up into the ant's brain and makes it attach itself to the edge of a black of grass so that a rabbit might come along and eat it.
Scientists know a lot more than ordinary people (this is shocking news to many). I'm perfectly fine with them experimenting with it since that's the way vaccines and other medication are made. Simplay put, this gene only inhibit's a hormone, which could do wonders for many people in the world if a similar gene can be created. In fact, many cellular medical treatments involve the use of a virus to insert an artificial gene into cells.
Scientists have a bad rep from mainstreme media since almost every movie that involves science has retards making "experiments that (always) goes wrong".
I mean, as long as it's safe (these experiments have laws on them too), go for it.
What is more serious is the ethical implications that this has. To what degree should we be allowed to manipulate how much we can control animals?
Because I think this is much more the direction this technology is headed. Mind controlling of animals for human servitude.
We already have replaced beetle brains and stuff with electronics and made remote controlled flying beetles. That stuff scares me to death. It doesn't seem ethical. Or maybe it's just that scary. I don't know. I just don't like it.

Scientists also get a bad rep from having t do what the government tells them. Scientists made the atom bomb after learning to create nuclear reactions for the use of generating electricity. It's an extreme example but it's the kind of thing that supports conspiracy theories. I can't do anything about z-day so why should I worry about it? starry is right in that media and pop culture hype make people more paranoid than they should be.
You are aware the media is already mind controlling people, right?
As well, the people who make silly comments about this and spreading rumors also contributes to it.
The media is manipulating people. Not mind control.
The only mentioning of mind control that I made was the ethical implications of controlling and manipulating non-human animals to the degree that using this as a type of technology would be. True, it would be very useful for humans to be able to have better control over animals, but is it ethical to control animals to that degree?
I find that it wouldn't truly be ethical to control animals to such a degree. Animals are not mere objects, they are beings with their own thought patterns and can make decisions on their own. If we use mind control on animals, then we reduce them to nothing more than something like a chair. Not exactly, but you get my point.
