Thinking about the quest feature

Hello, I have been thinking about the best way to go about the potential quest feature that may be added soon. My original idea was to have it popup randomly when you would battle, visit camp or the inn, etc. and have a skip option in case the user just wants to battle. However it would probably be better if I add it the same way like how Chocobo Billy appears in the chocobo farm. That way you can just continue on but if you want to interact with the characters that option is yours.

The hardest thing about the quest is how I should go about programming it. If possible I will try to store the events and options in the database which would be easy for certain "writers" such as wingzero to add new events and options. Or I may just add the options in a file and somehow import the written events. I want to go with the database version since that would be cool but would take a lot longer to try and program efficiently. I suppose the DB version would have to contain multiple tables and they would have to join based on event ID in order to work so hopefully it shouldn't take too much time to implement.

Sorry I began brainstorming there. Basically my point of this topic was to ask if you think it would be better just to have the quest appear at the top of the screen from time to time similar to how Chocobo Billy appears in the farm. I think that would be best Smile

The way you are thinking about (db?)... would that be the easiest way if you wanted to change the quest/story later on? IOW, once people completed that one or it got old/out-dated/whatever, then would you be able to go into the database easily and just replace certain storylines? I think if anything is hard-coded, its not very easy to change things right?

Just thinking outloud Very Happy

EDIT: Yeah the way Billy is now is easy for me,,, it would be a seperate block above the battle arena? That might push the B.A. too far down for everything to be on screen at the same time, IOW, I would have to scroll down for buttons. Perhaps the story at the bottom would be better?

i think... well all this coding stuff is over my head at the moment buuuut doing whatever makes it easier to add things in the future would prolly be your best bet if only to save you from potential problems down the road.

as for a storyline, that sounds might sweet. *brainstorming warning* would there be different story lines for each class and the such? and then maybe certain quests (sidequests) that you could only do when you had certain things in your inventory. anyway, sounds good either way. might actually get me to play the game again once i find time fun lol. best of luck.

i haven't seen chocobo billy yet (still missing 2 chocobo burgers on my grill to take care of <.< *glares at the 4 he already caught and grins evily*)

anyway, it sounds good like that, if it's like how i imagine it would be indeed a good option to skip it...
although if what kimbrrli said it would show underneath the actual battle i think it'll be skipped too often even if you want to play it, cause fighting is basicly paying attention to your hp/mp and the opponents health, and pressing the buttons will go quickly after a while which will make you miss it...

so perhaps when it will pop up before you press the "battle" button and you're at the screen with your avatar and the currently equiped part sounds best, and popping up when you enter the inn or go camping...

i haven't realy been writing more since i got kinda stuck with the story line, i have 2 other quests in my head which could follow up on the one i started writing, so i now try to create something to get them flow over with eachother...

I like the idea, but maybe you can add the Quest message as a new PM? YouŽll get an automated message regarding your quest, and I think that can be modified sort of easier than a DB or file Confused

:S quests sound awesome, it does get a little tiresome just constantly killing monster. but i think it would be very cool if you can actaully get the quests to look a bit like tat of final fantasy V or any of the 2 d ones. Very Happy it not too hard to make n i think you maybe able to rpg maker 1 for this, but im not sure. But if you want it done by flash, i can design the dugeon n such, it pretty easy to do.

Quests seem good to me- its best to have it like the farm I think, if you're thinking about updates.

I think an option like the Chocobo Farm on the shop is ok... Maybe a Quest Area or stuff you should check every often (for example, 10 levels) in order to take the quests?
