The reason why the PS3 controller is shaped like that
Looking at this demo it seems to make sense:

I would trust that .gif more if it were on the official sony website. Anyway, yeah I do like the position of the shoulder buttons because they do cause cramps in the current PS2/PSX controller position. That goes for the psp as well, which is even worse.

i personally have never held a PSP, but i have heard bad things about the controll scheme (my friend says that the joystick is too far in the bottom left and gives him cramps)
the PS2 controller i always thought was bad. well.. not bad, just poorly designed. it gave me HUGE hand cramps, the buttions and controller were hard to use silmultainiously, buttions too far apart, left joystick in odd position for how often its used, etc. so i am happy that sony is going with a new controller design because if i do buy a PS3 i dont want as many hand cramps as the PS2 controller did. heck the reason i liked the xbox controller is because every buttion (but start/back, black/white) were extremely easy to hit (thats fixed in the 360, but the center buttion is sometimes hard to hit, then again hitting that buttion doesnt mean life or death)
it could flop, but atleast it has a chance in my book. if they make it large enough to fit in american hands (like in the .gif you showed) then it could do quite well. but if they make it tiny for japanese schoolgirls hands then yah i will probably complain.

Yeah, while the psp is awesome, the controls are kind of squashed in. It only gets bad when you're playing intense games - say, Burnout Legends and you are constantly on the boost button (R shoulder button) while pushing X and steering, your right index finger knuckle will feel really soar after a while because of the shoulder button. I guess it HAD to be put in the position, but it's the bulging side of the console that causes the cramp because there is no other way to hold it.
The PS2 controller is still good, if you let the middle part of your finger hit the shoulder button rather than the tip you should be fine, which is what I do. But the Gamecube controller is still my favourite one at the moment because every button is so easy to hit without adjusting your hand.
The Xbox controller is an ok shape (the original one) but I don't like the trigger buttons. On one of my mates Xboxes both of his controllers are stuffed because the right trigger buttons are totally limp from playing Halo. And yeah those black/white buttons are in the most ridiculous position.

yah original xbox controllers (the non s) were insane
S fixed the size, but the B/W Start/Back buttions were still a problem.
the 360 controller fixed that as well. so im good with xbox now. we are in the clear.
i have NO room to talk on the PSP controlls (as i said above) as i havent even held one.
GC controllers are awesome. the Z buttion is odd, but the rest are amazing, simple controller and its used well.

yeah, at first (before i owned a gamecube) i thought the controller was... stupid. i was so used to the 64 controller which i found to be amazing. i still do infact. but since i got the gc, i find the controller to work very well, and though its a completely different shape, it still has something about it that reminds me of the 64 controller.

The NGC controller is quite good. Very nice hold to it. The only hard things to hit are X and Y simultaneously, but you only run into that with games like Soul Calibur and the sort.
We'll see how the Revolution either eases or confuses gaming.

Did you here that when you buy the games you can only play them on the first system they are played on that means you can not sell of buy used games for PS3

My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing. Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose." ~ Ganondorf. |

its not a fact yet, and when i brought it up Fun closed my topic. (something about how microsoft planted that whole subject....)
soo yaaah.
but they might not have too worry too much. Fox got their greedly little hands on Blu-Ray tech and are demanding a 2nd copy protection on all discs with propiriaty Fox codecs.
which basicly means that some of that extra space Blu-Ray gives is going to be padded with copy protection.
unfortunately while im on the topic of Blu-Ray, it has an odd shaped lazer to fit more data on the disc (the reason it holds more than HD-DvD, as both use blue lazers)
unfortunately with this design, DRE's are going to be more common than they are with DvD's, and not just that but the chance that a disc will burn incorrectly is increased and the life of the reader is reduced as any small adjustment is easily turned into a broken drive.
HD-DvD is only about 10% more unstable than current DvD tech. Blu-Ray is about 70% more unstable. (the % is not chance of error, its increased chance of error)
so it looks to be that the case will be:
Blu-Ray: Some extra space over HD-DvD after the extra codec padding for copy protection
HD-DvD: Less likely to malfunction than Blu-Ray.

Hmm, that image kinda looks lik he's holding a carboard cut out of a PS3 controller. Like how I have a paper sized thing of a PSP. The photo looks like its taken in a bedroom too, lol But it definately aint a real controller he's holding.
