Well, mine is more like a plot layout. Otherwise, i get lost in my own story and end up doing bout 50 rewrites before I just give up. I write the character's name, age, and who they are as well as their part in the story. then i do a genearl story layout that's usually a few pages long in word.

i used to do that . But like i said, i have a tendency to get dragged around by my own story without wanting to go certain directions. I also write down anything i might want them to say at that point too. It also give me an opportunity to get some foreshadowing and plot devices placed. XD

You should do that...you arent supposed to force it to go places...or else it feels forced...it should go where it will and then after that you can cut if it feels baggy XD
I mean i have a tendency to lose my direction. I don't force it, but i think out where i want it to go generally and figure out how to naturally let it flow there.
Example:
I wrote a naruto fanfic awhile back. It started off pretty good, but i got dragged around by my story and i didn't really know where to go once i got myself stuck somewhere. I uploaded it chapter by chapter, so i couldn't just go back and fix it all. Instead, i just forced another 5 chapters out that were total crap to get myself out of the situation and sasuke ended up with a kid... which was pointless and dumb....
In my new story (soooo happy to have started writing already), i've taken the time to plan out the characters and what i actually want them to do. Rather than randomly figuring out halfway through the scene that two people would probably make a cute couple, i already know who's supposed to end up with who, so i can set up their personalities to make them compatible. I can also make more scenes to make it seem more like, "Hey.... maybe do you wanna get coffee sometime?" rather than "I like you because of... some.... reason.......... date?!"
Plus, the later lets me concentrate on character development. My characters in my new story are practically my children. It's humanizes them rather than making them seem more like a sitcom character.

Well thats true...you do need to figure out your characters personalities before you write...then they just sorta do stuff and you dont have to work too hard XD

My process goes (usually):
Make characters generally
decide what i want to happen
more detail
develope characters based on what's happening to them
do a once through of the story in my head.
decide what i need and don't
SUPER IN DEPTH CHARACTER TIME
go through story again and decide what they would do in situations.
decide what will happen when.
Repeat all the steps about 70 times until everything looks like it would happen naturally.
Write.
when i was trying to decide if my story was at the point when i wanted to write it yet, i found a lot of the conversation going,
"Well, why don't you just have this happen?"
"Because he wouldn't do that."
"Can't you MAKE him do that?"
"Can i make you feel comfortable jumping on the table naked screaming the lyrics to "My Hearts Will Go On?"
".......no?"
"Then no, I CAN'T make him do it."

Well, that was with a friend, but yes, i do talk to myself a lot. I try to define them as people by figuring out how they act around me. AKA, i talk to them in the car on the way to school and such.
as strange as it is, most of my characters don't like me for various reasons....
And squarey... have you honestly NOT noticed the camera in your room yet?
