The Beast Children

Chapter 1 (Part 1)

Cassandra woke with a start, her breath coming out as wisps of frozen, frigid air and her room pitch black. It was around midnight according to her intuitive sense of time and right now the hunters were out, looking for Anthros to enslave and use as house pets and laborers.

One thing that the hunters couldn’t do was capture mages. Anthro mages, like Cassandra, were far too powerful and could destroy a hunter quite easily. That was her salvation. Cassandra, however, was a loner and wouldn’t allow companions. She felt unwelcome and unwanted wherever she went.

Now, few Anthros went out in public unless they had a hooded cloak and cloth mask covering their muzzle. Cassandra stayed away from the villages because even Anthros didn’t trust her much. She kept her elegant traveling cloak and robes but she threw away her mask. There was little need of it in the wilderness.

All these thoughts running through her head were remnants of her past, her life before the incident. The Anthros hid themselves to prevent detection from the human tyrants, who blamed them for all the worldly wrongs. The humans began what they called “Cleansing.” It consisted of brutal and violent hunts and nothing else. Women, children, babies, none were safe from their brutality and selfish ways. This drove the Anthros underground and into the forests. There they built cities.

Cassandra got up, all the while fighting back the tears and the memories. She steeled herself and made a small, cold meal so anything nearby wouldn’t notice her presence. After the meal, she groomed her sand-colored fur and yawned greatly as she stretched her feline body. As far as Anthros went, she was tall for a cat, standing at 6’3”. As with all Anthros, she was bipedal and spoke in a smooth, soft voice. The males all had deeper voices.

Her tail flicked quickly from side to side as she went about her daily chores. Cassandra started down the path, no trace of her camp was left behind. “Time to travel more. Wonder where to next.” With that, she pulled out a map and found a target. It was Mt. Celica, a sacred mountain where she would be safe.

That day, as she was walking, rain slowly started to fall. She calmly put her hood up and kept walking, her eyes and ears alert. Hunters and humans on a Cleansing foray used rain to their advantage, knowing that no traces would be left behind after a kill or capture. Cassandra heard a twig snap and whirled around, focusing on the source as she crackled with violet-colored electricity. “Come out or feel my wrath!”

The thing that made the twig snap completely took her off guard. It was a male fox Anthro. His subtle muscles and bright, sky blue eyes made him quite handsome. His light blue fur, although matted with blood from an extremely deep wound in his side, made him even more attractive. White fur went up his neck and covered his lower jaw as well as going down his chest and w\she assumed down his body and inner thighs. His ears were black from midway up to the tip. Oddly enough, his hands didn’t have the distinct pattern of black gloves. His tail looked soft and well groomed, the tip colored white like his body.

Cassandra stared at him for a moment before realizing that he desperately needed help. She ran to him as fast as she could, catching him just as he fell unconscious. She didn’t know why but she couldn’t take her eyes off of him. She took care of him the best she could and cleaned him up. That night, he finally awoke and, in a barely audible voice, asked, “Wh-where am I…?”

Cassandra just smiled and covered him up. “You are in my camp and also in my care. Your wound was very bad and you would have died if I weren’t there.” The fire she made gave the fox his first look at the one who saved him. She was a sand-colored cat. Her fur was medium length, not too short nor too long. It framed the graceful curves of her body and accented her lithe form. Her tail was long and had more fur near the tip, the tip itself marked with black and white. The fur along her neck and, to his own assumption, down most of her chest and abdomen, was a little lighter shade. Her most striking feature was her emerald eyes. Though feline, they were bright and showed gentleness unseen in most.

Chapter 1 (Part 2)

She just calmly made him comfortable, not noticing how he kept looking at her. “I’m Cassandra. And you are?”

He looked at her for a couple seconds and decided he could trust her. “I’m…Gabriel.” She smiled and calmly asked him questions. Many had to do with why he was there and why he traveled alone. Cassandra found out that Gabriel was a wandering rogue and was good with stealth and assassination. His wound came from a skirmish with a Cleansing party and from then on he wandered in a daze. As he told his story, she found herself wanting to hug him and tell him that it would be ok and that she would be his companion. She thought to herself, I need to find out why I feel this need to make him happy.

Gabriel watched her, noticing how she seemed to be thinking a lot. He started to relax, his mind hoping that her thoughts were of him. He personally felt a great attraction to her, both physically and emotionally. She seemed kind and compassionate. Her eyes betrayed that although she seemed cold and uncaring, she felt emotion deeply.

She looked at him, the realization hitting her. “No…it can’t be…” She looked into a pocket in her robe and smiled happily. “Well, it’s true. I wonder…” Cassandra softly hugged Gabriel, testing his reaction.

The hug completely took him by surprise but Gabriel leaned against her, eyes averted showing that he was embarrassed. She chuckled and released him. “Interesting, very interesting.”

Gabriel was utterly confused. He didn’t understand why she would hug him. He watched as she set her bedroll by his and laid him down. “I’ll be close in case you need me at all. Just wake me and I’ll tend to you.” She laid down facing him, her eyes containing an odd sparkle that had started appearing after the hug. He was determined to find out what it was.

He found out that morning. He awoke to find a certain sand-colored cat curled up on his chest, purring. Gabriel silently chuckled and shook his head. He should have known that she would do that. As he softly pet her ear, she started to wake. Cassandra panicked a little until she realized she was on him. “Guess the cat’s out of the bag, both literally and metaphorically.” That statement elicited a burst of laughter from Gabriel and he just pet her ear more. “Yup, guess your body reacted on its own.”

She quickly got up and hurriedly put everything away as Gabriel took note of his possessions. They both avoided eye contact due to their embarrassment and feelings for each other. Nether could find words for their feelings and they were scared to do any actions in case it was taken badly.

Gabriel agreed to travel with Cassandra and they both hurried off, wanting to find safe haven so they could sort out their feelings and possible budding relationship.
