Taking Christ out of Christmas
Now I know this is not a sensitive subject and may cause some arguments but I would like to hear some of your opinions about how extreme they are getting about removing any traces of Christianity from Christmas.
This is just my opinion as a pagan. Christmas was the joining of the Christian celebration of Jesus's birth and the pagan festival of Yule but its grown from those roots into one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. I think to take Christianity out of Christmas is stupid and its showing intolerance to the Christians. Whats worse is that most of the people crying about this are atheists that claim the christians are intolerant of them.
I'm only bringing this up because of this news story http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,461424,00.html and I wanted some more opinions from other religions.

I am greatly impressed by you, Tifa!
I'd tip my hat to you, but I don't wear hats.
It is true. There is no reason to take Christ out of Christmas. It makes no sense. If someone doesn't like what Christmas stands for, then they can just choose not to celebrate it, instead of trying to change a religious event.

(Note that I have never truly seen many of your posts.)
It is odd that few are responding to this. I guess they fear an argument, which is understandable.

Christmas - Christ = 'Mas. Who would want to celebrate a holiday called 'Mas?
Anyway, most people that celebrate Christmas now aren't even Christian. I mean, if they don't want to associate Christ with Christmas, then don't. Don't sing those songs, don't watch the Christmas movies, but don't take it away from people that actually want to. I mean, that's like celebrating Hannakuh, but wanting to take all the Jewish aspects out of it just because you don't like them. The Christmas we celebrate today is undoubtedly a Christian holiday, even if it didn't start out that way, so why try and change that?

Christmas is about consumerism and everyone knows it. Taking Christ out of Christmas would just reduce the amount of things to buy. I say we make it more about consumerism and try our best to buy as much as possible.

If all my money was gone, and I had none to buy presents, and no one got me a present, I would still celebrate Christmas. I would do things for people; I can give without buying, I can do tasks for others and still keep the spirit of giving alive. I can make things and give them. I don't need to buy them. Or I could simply praise the entire day, still within the spirit of Christmas. For most it may be consumerism, but that is because most have forgotten the true meaning (despite all the Hallmark movies that try to tell you the true meaning; an irony in itself)

Agnotist here. (Unlike Aethiest who doesn't believe in god or satan, I believe there is not enough evidence to prove the religion to be true or fake.)
I believe that is stupid as well.. The holiday started because of Christianity... To take it out would just leave Santa, and that's just a fairy tale.. can we start making holiday's from fairy tales? Like, "It's Candy Day! Each year on Candy Day, Hansel and Grettle steal a piece of that candy house and gives it to you to eat when you wake up!"
Like seriously... Just... Lame...

I wasso relieved when I read your first post, I was fully prepared for someone who WANTED it to be a more secular holiday. If you hate Christianity don't celebrate Christmas (I'm not saying only Christians should celebrate it, just that if you're a Dawkinsite religion hater as opposed to a non-believer - an antitheist if you will - don't celebrate it.)

Nah I would never want it to be secular I mean what's the big deal though I do think that other holidays should be recognized at schools mainly for education purposes y'know but don't mix them together after all they're not even held on the same days.

I don't think its a good idea to take it out, a lot of Christmas stuff is based on Christ..... And I guess in a way a lot of people feel happier to see a navitity scene somewhere, even though they might not actually want to know about Christ.....

I'm surprised that this didn't turn into a big argument already and glad at the same time too though...anyway If you all wouldn't mind I'd love to know what religions you all are (just for perspective)) I've already said in the first post that I'm pagan.

Christmas has been so far taken out of context, that even if the "Christ" is left in it, it is still no more to most people then an excuse to get stuff for free.
As I've gotten older (from when I was 5-6 to now), I've learned what Christmas is truly actually about, and it is kind of sickening to see what it has turned into all over the world. Even in places with a very low Christianity rate, Christmas is still celebrated because the religion aspect is so far gone anymore.
I suppose it is really up to the individual to decide how Christmas should be celebrated, but until a few years ago, I thought the holiday was just about getting stuff from Santa.
Even though it has gotten to where it is, most aren't going to complain, as they like how it is. Guess that is just how many of us are anymore.
