The expert grid has less nodes and less locks alowing more freedom (meaning you can have a White Mage Auron and a warrior Lulu). As a general rule, your stats will be lower with the expert grid.

The first time i've played FFX, i chose Standard, and for beginners, that's great. You'll go through the story nicely and each character will get their own designated space to develop, and once you've gone through the story, and you want to attempt the side missions, then you can expand these characters to other specialties.
For example, throughout the story, you'll have Auron level up in Strength but not in Magic. And once you've cleared most of it, you can move Auron around the grid, so he can use magic too.
BUT, if you're looking to do the secret tasks in the game, DO NOT use standard.
This is because the expert grid is MUCH bigger and thus your characters will be able to get much stronger than if you used Standard.
If you maxed Standard (with HP break) = Each character can have up to 20,000 HP
If you maxed Expert (with HP break) = Each character can have 40,000 HP +
A big difference when you're fighting secret bosses like:

Sorry, need to correct some of this. As I said above, the expert grid has less nodes than the standard grid (I just checked FFX wikia, it's about 50 less apparently). Also with the standard grid, you can get up to about 60k HP on the standard grid if I remember right (even 99999 is possible, but you have to make some minor sacrifices elsewhere).
As for the secret bosses:

I don't know about you but i've maxed out the sphere grids for 3 characters on standard, and they've reached 20,000 HP max.
Expert has less nodes because it assumes the player knows what s/he is doing, and thus able to fill the blank nodes with HP spheres etc and is thus able to increase HP overall.

Did you clear out ALL the nodes (except abilities) and replace them? It takes 25 MP nodes, 63 strength, magic, evasion, accuracy, defence and luck nodes to max those for everyone. That leaves about 200 something nodes for HP, multiply that by 300...

I was under the impression that weapons and armor only had 4 slots for abilities. Not that that makes your point any less valid. If anything it makes it more valid.

That's exactly what I just said, you can't have 5 abilities on the armour, so if you really want Break HP Limit, something else has to give.

Ah, gotcha, I thought you were saying that if you put Break HP Limit on an item, you then couldn't have 5, because BHL would be taking one. I got it now.
