you know, i never even asked myself the question... but its too broad. bc ffx did have you level up, same as all the rest, it was how you got abilities which was important. sooo, sphere grid, materia, jobs, or junction system should be the choices.

my vote is for materia without a doubt.

not wise, just making the question more direct.

and for the record, i did enjoy the sphere grid. i sent tidus around that thing at least 3 times (erasing and replacing nodes each time) twas amazing.

Yep, the sphere grid was an interesting new take on it. I wouldn't mind seeing it in some more games, but the standard leveling system is great, too.

Good question. The sphere grid was great because once you found the path you wanted to take for a character in order to get a certain move/spell, you had to keep winning battles so you could work you way towards that node. What I mean is that you knew how long it would take until you reached that node so it would provide a challenege.

Then again it kind of gave away what attacks you would learn later in the game.

I didn't like the grid much. One reason was because it leveled up after almost every fight, so I always had to stop and level up all of the players every 2 minutes. Then sometimes I would want to backtrack to get a node that I skipped, but later on I would forget that I was going backwards so I would be going back and forth and wasting level ups until I realize it.

If you just let the level ups build up before upgrading a character, then the whole grid will light up since you can move so many places.

Plus you couldn't max out all of the character stats. The grid wasn't a huge problem but I would prefer the original system.

I don't hate the grid system. It was interesting, but I do prefer normal leveling up.
One big reason is because I sent Tidus to go learn Black Magic (I don't know why) with a teleportation sphere and then when I really realised that he was very bad at it, I wanted to get him back, so I had to use a good deal of time getting him back to his older place, and in that time, I continued on with the story.

So now since Tidus started being magic focused, rather than fighting focused, he's very weak in all areas, so I've been spending a lot of time leveling up along Auron's main path to get strength...and thus, I've mostly stopped playing the game.

But it does give the game more replay value...I'd have liked it more if I hadn't messed with people's path & just had them go around the grid normally and make them all masters of everything (to an extent).

My problem was that I chose the expert sphere grid instead of the beginner sphere grid. This meant that there was less HP on tap for me and the paths were more intertwined, so it kinda got mesed up but I was able to learn more attacks faster.

Sphere grid made the game a bit too easy to me. Same goes for junctioning.

Well i have gotta agree with fun and grilledcheese i much prefer the leveling system for the simple fact that like fun i kept backtracking and wasting moves after by carrying on.
I can only hope that it doesn't make an appearance in ff12..........If anyone happens to know which system is going to be in usei n ff12 i would be grateful.

Hmm... that really depends. Is the sphere grid limited to the one FFX uses? Because then I'll have to choose level-up too but which level-up are we talking about? Just FFX? because it has both so both would work.

If speaking in general, sphere grids have always made games who used them better and adds an addicting quality to the games sometimes even adds a little quirk charm that turns a bad game into a cult level game while the level up system always makes the game unbalanced through grind and is always dependent on number vs. number and is only made interesting with some quirks like sphere grids.

Thus when talking in general, I vote for the sphere grid over the level up system.
