Sony Online Service (for the PS3)
i can say that ive been fairly accurate when it comes to guessing about whats going on with the PS3. its a confusing aspect, but ive been there from the begining..
now im going to attempt to piece together what information i have heard about sony's online service.
What i have heard from Sony themselves is that it is a copy of Xbox live minus the Monthly fee and plus L33tness... now thats from sony, so of course they would say that..
taking what they have said i can see Sony Online Service (SOS) not really being something compared to Xbox live.. but rather the PS2 online, plus the features it should have had to begin with. such as friends, downloads, and Messaging features. i dont see too much the whole 'Global competition' part where you find who is the best of the best across all racing games like you can do on the 360, but rather that kind of feature would be provided by the content developer.
heres a little list of my rundown:
Pro's of SOS:
-Free
-Online Gaming
-Friends list, unified online experience, downloads
Con's of SOS:
-Ad supported
-Temporary servers
-latency will vary greatly from game to game.
let me explain those cons. what sony has said in an interview is that to support the servers for downloadable content to be provided at either free, or cheep prices is for them to make online games ad supported, it will most likely mean that you will have loading screens between games for McDonalds... worst case senerio: Viagra guy has a commericial play between every match (yah, motion commercial) sony has not yet defined what kinds of ads will be played, but its most likely going to just be static picutures for random products that company's think the gamers who are playing the game would buy.
By Temporary servers, i mean the fact that since it is not a Monthly fee type of game, game servers are still free to move. so one day you could be playing your favorite game online, and then when the expansion pack comes out for the game, you cannot play online unless you upgrade to the expansion..
now it probably wont be that bad, they will keep most games that have a moderate base up and going, but those game that dont have too many gamers playing could find that their classic game with online features is suddenly lacking an online play mode as the servers are all gone for it as they moved to support that new online game with alot more players.
The final Con i point out is Latency variety, its going to be expected that if you look at the last gen console on online gaming that latency can be expected. Games like Halo 2 were laggy online even when everyone had a broadband connection (note: games are only laggy on halo 2 if somones resources are limited, as in they are downloading at the same time thus making their connection much MUCH slower than normal) the variety will come from that even though games can block non-broadband gamers from playing, the fact that the OS for the console is always enabled can easily provide a soft crack that would allow dial-up gamers to play on a broadband only game.
That is if the PS3 can find a way to effectively put in a server that would direct traffic for every game individually meaning, it could monitor speeds and then boot those with lower latencys out of games so they cannot slow down other gamers from playing (like what the 360 is doing, and what the xbox should have done.)
content from the Playstation download service (like the Xbox live arcade, or the Nintendo Download centere) will probably not have the best outcome... now its still possible that it will kick ass, i mean XBLA everyone thought would be crap until it came out and kicked ass with some amazing Indie games. but the reason im getting this whole 'Playstation Download service will stink' idea is from how poorly Sony handled the PSP, frankly the PSP is the closest comparison to offering another service that is aimed at a very specific audience (like downloadable games will be) and from it, it showed that it will take a LONG time for anything interesting to come out for it. thankfully, when something interesting DOES come out for it, it will be much easier to get as you already own the console and wont have to shell out $250 to get a whole new machiene to play niche games.

all in all i dont expect it to be mind blowing, but i do expect it to give gamers a much needed boost to the much craptacular PS2Online service. and hey, if its better than i anticipate, it could even make the Competition reconsiter its market plan and also choose to go a similar route in offering a lower price, or offering a gold verison to gamers who would put up with ad's between games.
i mean xbox live will still beable to offer things that SOS could never achieve such as:
-Ranking system
-User Rating System
-latency optimizations for best online preformance
but then again this is just speculation from what i have observed, read, and heard. i could be compeltely off, or right on the dot.

That a once in a great while wonderfully long thing I just read from Thorlord. Nice things to know. I already knew it was an expanded-upon free version of XBOX live, but also learned much today.

its going to be like most things sony.. its going to suck at launch and for a few years, and then finally become awesome-ness toward the end of its lifespan.
i see a perfected SOS by the PS4, and sony using the PS3 as a tool to learn and evolve their own service.
