Somehow... it figures...
So i decided that, for my next story, I want to try my hand at a murder mystery. To do this, i thought i'd keep it simple and try something cliche like poison or stabbing. I dunno, just something simple.
So i was researching poisons and I came across a site that was listing off the top 17 deadly poisons in the world. At the top of the list was the most deadly: Botulinum (pronounced: ba-chu-li-num). I read into it a little and I came up with some interesting facts:
It kills by causing the body's nervous system to shut down IMMEDIATELY.
While powerful, the substance is easily destroyed by heat.
It is produced by clostridium botulinum, though it's considered a man-made toxin.
Was first found in unsafe and ill-prepared meat.
One teaspoon of the stuff can kill 1.2 billion people. (meaning it takes about 6 teaspoons to kill everyone earth... you use more milk than that in a cupcake recipe).
And then... I found it has a nickname. Not only that, but it's something we all know of. I thought something this deadly would be scarce or sealed up somewhere in a government base but... no. It's not. In fact, you may be around people who have had direct contact with it. not only that, but you PROBABLY have come into contact with them, and most likely on a daily basis. And let me tell you, there's a lot more than the 6 teaspoons of the stuff in existence. We could kill the population of the world BILLIONS of times over with the amount we have.
The nickname: Botox.

You didn't know that? Sorry, it's a thing that bio class teaches you.
It's poisonous enough that if you eaven take a mL too much, after applying it to your face, you could end up never smiling again. It kills your cheek muscles. 
And one teaspoon is the minimum to kill people under certain conditions, meaning that if you shared that for everyone to injest, I won't kill even a million people. Probably only if you put it in the medulla oblongota which controls your breathing.

but my bio teacher was a hippy. all we learned was about photosynthesis and we got to watch the Lorax.
It seems like this would actually fall under Chem class. but we mostly learned equations and important things like.... how to safely handle Mercury and... why we can't force chemical bonds and.... how to roast a marshmallow over a burner. XD

Botulism cav also be found in cooked foods held for an extended amount of time with little oxygen, poorly prepared rice, potatoes, and smaoked fish, and canned foods.
It's one of those things you really have to worry about in a kitchen.

Only reason I knew about it was because I watched a special on animal planet about moles (that's right, I am that lame) and evidently it is also found in their saliva which they use to paralyze the earthworms they eat.
