So will there be another Playstation next gen?
I have been so busy working on the sites that I no longer keep up with the gaming news. Not to mention the news got kinda old, all you hear about is how well the Wii is doing, and more delays and rumors from games that take six years to come out Anyway, do you think there will be a PS4 (or another name)? If so, do you think that they will stick to the basics and make it cheaper? If they do make another console, I predict a Wii controller type deal and the console would run $299 US Dollars.

well i thiink at some point in 2009 they will reveal or put out plans for a cheaper more compact version of the ps3. as for a ps4... i think theyve got a while and considering sony isnt making any profit on any ps3 they sell (last time i checked) i dont see why they would abandon a system that has already cost them so much. they will go down with the ship if it comes to it i think.
and the wii will probobly put out a hi-def wii at some point in 2009. and... microsoft is pretty much set for this year i think.

I think Sony will just stick with the PS3 for now.
There still making a loss on the console (about $30 ive heard excluding marketing etc) but the games have started flowing now. LBP, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles (such an ignored AAA RPG its hard to believe) and MGS4 released exclusively in 2008, this year theres Uncharted 2, Infamous, FF13 + VS13 (maybe), White Knight Story, GT5, God of War 3, (Yakuza 3 and Demons Souls in Japan) and there biggest budgeted game to date I believe which is Killzone 2 which will probably be the decider for them. Could be game of the year, best FPS ever, bigger than Halo or a total flop, who knows. Theres also a huge lineup of exclusive older games now as well like Everybody's Golf (I like it anyway), Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Motorstorm, Folklore, Uncharted and GT5 Prologue. I own all the games ive listed excluding the 2009 ones obviously and I wouldnt trade any of them but then for me the exclusives were why I brought the console. The consoles also still $400 in America I believe where as the 360 and Wii are quite affordable so im sure Sony has a fair few sales to come when they do lower the price and a great games library for people to buy which from the amount of 1st party investment theres been they should make a lot of it back. Things have started to look up lately and even the press are getting off the PS3's back as it even won best software lineup on Gametrailers which has always seemed 360 bias to me. Everyone see's it differently though and the PS3 won't win the console war but the PS3 can definatly be profitable.
Don't know if ive quite answered the question or anything but the point is the amount of 1st party development Sony has done this gen has been immense, they really do have the games working well with the hardware now and the investment may pay off when the consoles reduced in price. Even owners of say the 360 (maybe not the Wii) would be hard pressed to just ignore the lineup id say and it is probably the cost doing it for them atm.
So overall there is no point of even thinking PS4 yet but this year will be the telling tale I think of what type of console Sony will opt to make with the PS4.

The PS3 gets better with each year, 2009 is looking very strong for the console, unfortunately 2010 is looking very empty as all the big titles gamers have been waiting for are coming out this year.
the PS4 i believe will come out much sooner than is expected. i would say 2010 at earliest, but more than likely 2011. its said that the PS4 will incorperate an advanced design of the Cell processor and a new graphics chip (the one in the PS3 is quite outdated and the whole console really relies on the Cell for any decent graphics output) this is wize as it would allow for sony to launch the PS4 with 100% PS3 compatibility, make the transition for game designers easy as the coding would be similar to the PS3 while offering all the cheaper hardware that mass-production of the cell offers.
when you look at the advantages sony will have with making the PS4 a revamped PS3. its hard to imagine them waiting too long.
the 360 is going strong, most multi-platform games run and look better on the 360 (though exclusives look better on the PS3 than the 360, as comparing GoW2 to MGS4) i can see Microsoft waiting until after the PS4 to come out to release their next-gen console. (which from the sounds of it, might also incorporate a next-generation of Cell processors as well)
as for heading into 2009, i would say the PS3 is geared up for its strongest competitive year yet, there are many exclusive for the PS3 that are must-gets, yet only a handful for the 360 that come to mind for me.
[edit] let me clarify why i think the PS4 will utilize a next-gen cell processor rather than a new design.
1: its cheaper to use an existing design rather than redesign the whole damn thing
2: optimizing the design will give sony the biggest bang for the buck on manufacturing
3: the PS3 was mismatched with a underpowered graphics card, and we have yet to see any real power from the cell, and its doubtful we ever will as the RSX is the bottleneck.
4: Sony is pushing the Cell as a platform, to switch before the cell even takes off is a horrible decision.
5: It allows perfect Backwards compatibility with PS3 (as long as the graphics chip stays manufactured by nVidia)
6: i don't think you understand, when i say perfect backwards compatability, i mean your games will run smoother and have shorter loading times, as if you upgraded your Video card and CPU on your PC.
7: the PS3 has fairly open connections, a standard harddrive, Blue-tooth controllers, USB plugins. its doubtful that they will remove these features, which simplifies the design of the PS4.
because the Cell will be re-used, the PS4 is realistically almost done designed. i believe what really sony really is doing is waiting for development on the Cell to hit a milestone and then use that opportunity to push the PS4 as a platform for more than gaming. i believe the major milestone that they are waiting for is GPGPU (google it) development to take off and let the console utilize the cell and Graphics cards for more than linear tasks. but allow for those cards to do Physics and AI at a much more hardware level than ever before.
i will bet money, that the PS4 launches at $400. during that time, the PS3 will be about $250 to manufacture and the PS4 will cost around $450, they will take a slight burn in profits for a little while and use the momentum of a new platform to further drive down costs and start earning more from console sales.

Very interesting post Thorlord and I think I do remember Sony saying when they designed the PS3 the cell would be used again in the PS4 but as a multiplication of several cells put together.

While I agree 2010 looks empty I think/ am hoping that Sony have took the approach of only letting us know whats out in the current gaming year. Its annoying to release trailers for everything there working on 2 or 3 years in advance as it just leads to lots of waiting. Only game far in advance we know of is MAG for 2010.
I think MS did the same last E3. They focused on what they are doing in 2008. This was a bit disapointing and at the moment for me I don't know any real notable exclusive games coming for the 360 this year. Im sure MS has to have some tricks up there sleeve though as they do have a few 1st party studios working for them and sequels to current exclusives to come.

as i think about it a few come to mind, but nothing that a 'must have'
two halo games (halo wars, and Recon) but honestly i'm getting tired of halo. i don't have much high-hopes for Killzone 2 though, that game from the start has been solely about the graphics and nothing else, i imagine it will be a beautiful game that has horrible gameplay and story and people will still love it to death just because its an FPS on the PS3 (ala Resistance syndrome).

The first review has come in for Killzone 2 and it got a 10/10. Id take it with a pinch of salt though as it was the official PS3 magazine. I can't say Im that fussed about Killzone myself, I havent played the first one and I don't play many FPS games anyway.
I also thought Halo was supposed to finish with Halo 3. I think MS should probably just let it die and move on myself, get a new big exclusive prepared that they can take into the next gen.

oh god those Playstation magazines are partially why i hated sony and the playstation for so long. i bought SOOOO many crappy games that got great reviews from playstation magazines. essentially those mag's previews are essentially the rating of how much hype a game is having.
Halo as an multiplayer FPS is actually fine, its just the single-player that has gotten so freaking convoluted and boring.

Cant say I brought that many crappy games from the mags but I always got them for the demos back when it was the PS1 and 2. I decided not to bother getting anymore of the mags as it doesent take many issues to equal the cost of a full game, and now the demos are on PSN anyway and the internet has enough game news so there isn't much point.
I agree with Halo as well. I did play Halo 3 story with some friends. Got through a fair bit of the game but I wasn't that interested really but I did enjoy the multiplayer even with only 3 people in a map. I imagine its much better online with 30 odd players as well.

a ps4 won come out for a few years, 2 years ihe ps3 hs been out already(amazing lol.) and id say about 3-4 years ill next gen.
as for console wars, wii has gone down because all here hits ar elike done, her gmaes suck now. he 360 has a nice balance coming out three years ago, even though i just got one on chrismas lol.
and i heard that the ps3 acuially coss slightly less then it costs o buy it. and ya FF13 is no exclusive, fyi, its comin out on the 360 as well.
and halo 3 isn the end? but the ending of the sory hadd abe it, oher hen Halo Wras, which is a prequal i think, and it is a stradegy game, so they are mixing it up alittle.
but the PS3 will own this year i think, the 360 and the wii are like out of big titles.
