So how do you rate this game?
I suppose you could rate it next to other games in general, or only compare it to other FF games. Many FF fans may be disappointed with all of the changes, and I was too in the beginning but I am just happy to play a new FF game again in this generation and I am having a good time with it. So overall I like the game, could have easily been a classic if they kept some of the elements that made FF great in the first place though. In fact they would probably be a lot less negative reviews if they didn't make the first five hours of the game unimpressive. The first impression is the best one. After 20+ hours into the game it feels like FFX with better graphics.

I'm really enjoying the characetrs but I am slightly annoyed at a couple of things. I really would have liked a world map, just to look at. I was impressed by the voice acting early on but it seems like its gotten worse as I've moved on. I'm currently 13 hours in and still switching between the two parties, which is the other slightly annoying thing.
Some of you may know already, but I loved ff12's battle system, because you could effectively control everything. Like buffing, healing, casting etc. I'm finding that in some boss fights that I have to use War & Peace almost 90% of the battle because the attacks are so powerful. In ff12 you could set a gambit for one character to heal only when required, and instantly be able to attack when healing isn't required, but in this one character has to be a dedicated healer. A couple of times i tried switching back to slash & burn to do some more attacks but within about 6 seconds both of us had low health. I eventually beat the boss but I'm still getting used to the battle system.
But that's only a minor gripe because I had trouble winning  and I miss FFXII's ultra customisation. I don't miss its story, and ff13's story is pretty good so far. Probably too early for me to rate it.

Stappy, dude, wait for Chapter 11 you will be even happier  I thought the game was "decent" when I was 13 hours in, wait until Chapter 11 man the game will amaze you for sure. Once I got there, I put down my controller and ordered the game right away and returned my rental. Please let me know when you get there.

Really? I was underleveled and I never had that issue... Or at least I think I was underleveled XD
I avoided about 20% of the opponents I found so I figured I was 20% underleveled...

Haha nice work. Maybe I'm not shifting fast enough or at the right times. It wasn't until the Odin battle that I realised i need to be a certain paradigm while he's doing one move, and another while he's attacking etc

The funny thing is that Odin is that only real challenging battle imo. Yeah Kuro is right, equip Hope with the Spark Ring if you have it, and if you if have the item to cast haste before the battle that would guarantee a victory.

I hate healers! There AI is poorly done! I need them to cast heal till I'm good to go (green healthbar) but time and again I have to switch to a double medic class and heal myself before I die. Just got to chapter 11 so I am hopeful.
I know the director of this game said it took a long time so certain elements could not be included (they made a whole know game engine for this game). HE said the next FF (which could be versus) is going to be traditional RPG with towns and such... Too lazy to find the quote but I will get to it.
I have yet to level more than 2 accessories.... I find that the increases in them (without knowing which ones are going to be good if you transmorph them) are too small and that drops for items to use to level them up too low. But that could change....
Also got the trophy for 100 enemies fully libra'd (full info on the enemy doesn't have to be through libra). It gives you a Sazh theme for the PS3! Which is sweet!

I have my ps3 background set as lightning . That was from the superstar trophy (beating the final form of the final boss with 5 star rating).
My thoughts on the game? It's way too restrictive at the start, but the later half is much better.

Who are you playing as, and who is your AI healer?
I typically have Vanille playing AI healer and she is amazing, I never drop below the green unless a boss lets out a crippling attack. Or I stay in the wrong paradigm for too long.
Also, what kind of accessories do you have? because in my experience without at least one defensive accessory you are going to die. One of the ones that gives you HP, casts protect when you're crippled, or something like that. As tempting as it is to stack strength I've found that it rarely turns out well. Maybe when you're farming weak foes but as soon as you start taking on more threatening opponents you have to have at least one defensive accessory.
As far as how I see the game. Well lets take a look at my new top FF list.
1. Final Fantasy VIII & Final Fantasy X
3. Final Fantasy XIII
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Final Fantasy VII
6. Final Fantasy IX
7. Final Fantasy XII
8. Final Fantasy X-2
Now this doesn't include things like Kingdom Hearts or Dissidia. I wouldn't be able to fit them in. XD This is also in relation to the experience for their time. Meaning that VII is obviously not as amazing as it once was.
The only real drawbacks I found were that the game locks you in for way to long. But even VII was guilty of this to an extent. Dependent on your playstyle and speed it could take anywhere from 7 to 20 hours to get out of Midgar. Also, when you are free there's still not much "World Map". There's a few issues with the enemies and the whole "If the character you're controlling dies it's game over" but they pulled it off pretty well. That has to be my biggest complaint though. Seriously, I said it in another thread I think, but I've never heard of anybody that has enjoyed that feature in a "Standard" RPG. Standard meaning not an action RPG or something like that. And as active as the battle system is I wouldn't call this an action rpg. Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG. That's one of my other gripes, they tried so hard to make it a pseudo action RPG and yet you still have no direct control over your character, it's still a pick your command and watch it performed. I have no issues with command combat, but they tried way to hard to make it action oriented without giving the player direct control.
While there's a lot to pick at, it's still a really good game overall in my opinion. Every game has something that you can nitpick at, but comparatively speaking it's pretty damn good.
