explosions in space are the stars, apparently. they said something like, imagine the sun suddenly exploding, it would suck in all the planets and become a seemengly endless mass of explosions, that's what happens with hundreds of other systems. i also remember they said there was a system that exploded a few thousand years ago, and it's still "on fire", and that it's thousands of times bigger than our system, the guys in the documentary said they were worried the heat might reach us and burn us all *evil lauhg* ...ahem, sorry ^^;
but seriously, i find it hard to believe we're the only ones around, this universe is HUGE, i don't think we're the only form of life there's out there. i think we MIGHT be the only ones we would recognize as human, but there must be some other kinds of life out there....quite an unsettling thought

You meant humanoid, then. There's almost certainly single-cell organisms lving somewhere in the universe. I know there was a documentary a while ago that mentioned a planet in another solar system, which was about the same distance from it's sun as Earth is from the sun in our Solar System, that theoretically could have living beings on it. Unfortunately, with the spaceships we currently have, it would take several centuries to reach that planet so we probably won't be able to find out.

I don't doubt there's single celled organisms in space, I believe the water bear is said to be able to withstand living on the sun if need be.
And to be honest I really hope we never have the technology to travel to other solar systems. At least not in my lifetimes.
That seems to me like defying the laws of life, and due to the inherent curiosity of humans, discovering intelligent life outside of earth would most likely lead to a need for power over anything discovered.
As well as possible war caused by disagreement about how to handle things, who should take credit, and who should continue advancement in said new found life.
However I do believe in what they're currently doing with the whole searching for another planet able to sustain life, seeing as how there're numerous end-of-the-world theories thing.
anyway, maybe egam's right, if we ever discovered any other kind of life out there that could somehow serve us, ppl would inevitably think about slaving that race, and it would indeed end in war...but what makes you think we would win? maybe i've been thinking too much about this, but maybe there's a superior race out there, if we haven't been invaded it's because we haven't been discovered or whatever, what i mean is, we might not be the strongest race there is IF there's life in other planets/galaxies and so on

we could be the exact same no one of us will ever know like lj sai isnt going to happen in our lifetime, its entirely possible that there is no sentient beings out there but i think it is more probable that there is especially with the re being another planet like earth which i saw something on too

Actually many theories state that once we discover life outside our world it will bring world peace, as we would now have to unite for universal diplomacy. However, regardless of world peace, we may then have terrestrial conflicts. Go play Mass Effect, you'll see what I'm talking about.
