Seriphyle: Chapter1

CHAPTER 1: The Nothing

A large empty room was filled with ten empty chairs that faced a wide chalkboard. Walls were decorated with various posters and A4 papers stuck to notice boards. The dim afternoon light gave the classroom a lazy atmosphere, yet relaxing and serene state. One person was present in the classroom, and was writing down notes in his notebook, glaring up at the door at the other side of the room from time to time. His desk, was infront of the chalkboard, facing the conference room and the door that remained shut for almost an hour now. The teen in his 20's had dark skin, his features were more african like, rather than caucasian like the rest of the city. You could say he was tall, about 180cm more or less. He had a slim haircut, that looked good with his face features. Brown eyes outstanded immediatly, if you looked at them, and he had a well straight face. His body was well built, you could say he worked out from time to time. The male wore a red tshirt with a familiar logo painted in white and dark blue denim jeans, that fitted him well. He wore white sneakers, that seemed to be in an almost new condition, as if he just bought them.

Mabus was the one who organized the meeting. Afterall, he was the only one capable of doing such an event. Many well known friends helped him organize it, and one of his ex-teachers even lended him the conference room for a day. It seemed that Mabus knew how to treat people, and they treated him with respect in exchange. A good character is always valued in a community, besides that, Mabus had the right personality. His midnskills never failed him, and he thought before acting. Although a bit of a slacker, but he only used that excuse when he needed some time alone to think about things, Mabus was a mindkiller. No one he knew could actually match up against him in intelligence. His athletical skills never failed either, he did various sports from time to time. Overall, Mabus was a valued friend and a good ally to rely on.

The recent events bothered him more than anyone. The world wide web was shut down completely, you couldn't acess any pages, nor use anything that had to be involved with exchanging data or information online. All but one website, one forum, the Funender. Mabus usually got to the bottom of anything that he wanted to know, but this time, his mind alone, couldn't not find the answers he desidered. Thus he invited all those who could join the meeting. He knew Wingzero would show up, he kept in touch with him over the phone for days, debating wether this was a terrorist attack or a supernatural phenomenom. Gencdo and Lara were supposed to show up as well, but you couldn't count on the female kind to show up at eight oclock in the morning. They had to be late. Mabus didn't know anything about the other members and if they were coming or not. He just hoped that atleast some of them would show up.

He seemed to be lost in his thoughts, glaring through the window on the left, and further outside, into the deep empty nothing. He liked to call it that way. It was what he named the current situation as, this phenomenom or whatever it was, that was happening, "The Nothing". Maybe this was all the beginning of the end of the world? The Earth was slowly stopping to turn around it's axis, and thus, nothing that worked on magnetic waves, nor anything that required large sources of electricity did? Too many questions, and no answers. This was bothering Mabus more than it should have. He hated the world, but he cared for it at the same time. Maybe, he was a mercenarie from the very beginning...

But his thoughts were suddenly interrupted as the classroom door suddenly opened and another male stepped in slowly, taking a quick look around that soon fixed on Mabus. Closing the door behind him he turned around and took another look around him again. Mabus in return, stood up from his desk and made his way towards the male, a smirk appeared on his face as he came closer and stretched out his hand towards the male who accepted it and smiled back.

"Wingzero?"

"Mabus.. never thought I'd actually get to meet you in real life."- the male replied, his eyes shooting bright behind his oval glasses.

Wingzero was in his twenties and matched his height with Mabus. He was a white, caucasion male with features of a german heritage. He had a straight face, and a short, blonde haircut that reminded anyone as if he'd just left the army. He was well built as well, but didn't stand a chance against Mabus's figure, he was rather more slim. Wingzero wore a black tshirt, black pants with several pockets at sides and dark grey boots you'd usually see construction workers wear. All plain, it wasn't really the latest fashion just yet, but a plain look suited him. Wingzero never cared about looks. His character was of a serious child that decided that growing up was a sin made to God. Even though religion was not his theme, Wingzero couldn't take any criticism at all. Short tempered, but devoted, he reminded a boy that has never left his old shoes. But those traits seemed to fit him well. No as smart as Mabus, Wingzero would still give a challange worth accepting.

"Me neither. Can't believe you came."- Mabus replied back, shaking hands. His accent was purely American. Unlike Wingzero, who spoke in fluent English accent.

"Anyone else showed up?"- Wingzero now had his hands in his pockets, and continued to stare around the conference room.

"I wish. The girls were supposed to come, but you know the're always late, eh?"

"Hmm.."- Wingzero nodded in agreement as Mabus showed the way towards the main desk before the chalkboard. His face showed that Wingzero was dissapointed, but instantly lighted up as the two arrived at the desk that was scattered with various papers and letters.

"Been working on it for some time."- Mabus admired his work, slowly searching through various files and folders he had scattered on the desk. "This here is where it all started."

Mabus slowly took out a large compilation of files from one of the yellow folders he had on the desk and handed it towards Wingzero. The other accepted it with care and placed it infront of him, opening the home built journal.

"The Nothing?"- Wingzero asked, eyes lost as images of things he'd never seen before appeared infront of him, notes, blueprints of devices he thought never existed, handwritten essays with various titles.

"I came up with that. No one really knows what's going on, so I decided to call it that."- Mabus replied, crossing his arms and looking outside the window again. Clouds started gathering up, it seemed that it would rain later on this evening. "Besides, it's only my theory..."

Wingzero kept going through various pages of the journal, ocassionaly stopping to take time to read an artictle, examine a blueprint, or an image. It seemed that this was too much information, and these theories, they seemed way out of the bounderies of normal. In the end, who would believe the Earth is slowly stopping to rotate around it's axis? All they mentioned on the news was that the main network source that powers the World Wide Web is down, and they are taking their time repairing it.

"Is this even possible?"- Wingzero looked up at Mabus, as he finished reading through the journal and handed it back to it's owner.

"It's only a theory.."- Mabus received the journal back and placed back into the yellow folder. "I think the government circuit all over the world are hiding something. It's can't be some network database failure, they would have fixed it the next day."

Mabus's face showed anger, and perhaps even regrett at the same time. He's been going through this for almost a month now, and yet no result. So many researches, so much time wasted, and all for nothing? Was it possible that he was wrong? Was it possible that the government wasn't hiding anything afterall? Was it all really just network failure?

"You're right."- Wingzero decided to back up Mabus's theories, instead of dropping on them. "If anything, your theory sounds like the only explanation. But what's next?

Wingzero turned and walked towards the large window that was even wider than the chalkboard. Outside, clouds have already gathered, and rain was soon to start. The blonde male looked further away from the clouds, as if he could see into the space itself. Something out there bothered him, he felt it well these days. Mabus joined him by the window, his arms crossed, he too, glared into The Nothing outside. Both of them kept quiet for a while, and it seemed that serenity was now the order in the room until Mabus spoke first.

"I think it's the end of the world.."- he whispered, his face showed concern. Wingzero, didn't reply, but his expression showed his reaction quite well. They both now understood that they might be living their last days of their lives. It was then, when Mabus, of all, regretted ever being able to work out the theory nor anything that had to do with The Nothing. He just wished it never happened. He even tried closing his eyes, hoping that this would all be a bad dream, but upon opening his eyes, he saw the same exact picture. Wingzero was staring outside the window, his face showed remorse and hatred, both combined into one feeling, not all could take such emotions at once.

"We're done for.."- he whispered, looking at Mabus who now leaned against the window with his back turned to it. Both exchanged looks, and both were completely lost as exact thoughts buzzed through both heads, and it seemed for once, that two different people suddenly have become exactly the same, despite their appearances.

***

Outside, the weather was acting up. The wind brushed the dirty pavements with dust and autumn yellow leaves, trees stood naked, ready for the cruel winter that would come in a month. Typical weather for the early November days. Dark grey clouds now shielded the Earth from the early sunrays, those who were meant to work today had to get to their shelter before the rain would start. It seemed that not only the rain would come alone, but a whole hurricane with it in a package.

Almond Institution stood in a friendly neighbourhood of two story villas, it's white stone structure outstanded above all other typical yellow and red walls. It was known that the institution was built in the early eighteen hundreds, but James Almond, it's founder, who now lay in a grave not so far away from the institution. A fine work it was, the institution, built purely from white stone, the roofs were made of wood, but then rebuilt into a finer material in order to resist bad weather. The interior was kept the same, though, some rooms and hallways were repainted in order to keep the institution alive for as long as it could stand.

From a first glance, the rooftops seemed to be an unvisited place for years, but if anyone looked from the other side's angle, they would see that a person was actually sitting on top of the rooftops, right at the tip's edge. It was unknown wether it was a male or female, as it wore a a black jumper with a hood placed low over it's head. Blonde streaks of hair were slowly showing out of under the hood itself. It wore black jeans that fitted with it's black Puma sneakers, that had several white lines at the side, and the known logo at the ankle. Slowly, it glared up at the skies above it, facial expression showed no feelings whatsoever. It reached for it's right pocket of the hoody jumper and took out a packet of cigarettes. Snatching one into it's mouth, it placed the packet back into the pocket and with the other hand, reached for a silver Zippo lighter. With a light click, it opened the lighter and was about to light up the cigarette, when rain started to pour hard, wetting both the cigarette in it's mouth and the person. Discarding the wasted tobacco, it let out an unhappy hum, and stood up, hands placed in pockets, it slowly eyed the clouds above, hard rain brushed against it's fugure.

***

Inside, Wingzero and Mabus were lost in their own thoughts. As rain started to fall, both backed away from the window and back to the desk, none saying a word. It was enough for both of them to understand the fact they were most probably going to face the end of the world, there was no need for words. Mabus sat down on one of the chairs, elbows on his knees, hands supporting his head that looked deep down, as if beneath the floor. But what the heck, anyone would feel lower than the center of the earth's level at this point. Wingzero was sitting at the other side of the room, glaring at the walls with various posters. It seemed he wasn't even looking at them, instead at the space between each poster that seemed to be less than even one milimeter.

Unexpecting another visit, the both suddenly look up as the door to the conference room was open again, and two girls under one umbrella made their way in. One was slightly taller than the other, but the shorter one looked older. Both had dark hair, and both were a little wet from the rain outside. The taller girl, who held the umbrela, closed it, and placed it next to the door, taking her black raincoat off. The shorter girl, too, took off her raincoat, and placed both coats on a desk nearby.

"A bit cold out, don't you think?"- the taller girl spoke, her Italian accent outstanded. She had long black hair that was brushed to the left side, tiny, black earings decorated her small ears, her straight face and slim figure. She wore a black plain sweater and red slim pants, alongside with her white Converse sneakers.

"Hey guys, sorry we're late.."- the shorter girl replied. She had a Whelsh accent, and was dressed similar to the taller girl, except for the red slim pants, where she wore black pants. The two could be sisters, as the shorter girl had her hair brushed to the left side two, but instead of letting her hair loose like the taller girl had, she had her hair tied back with two chop sticks, a similar haircut you'd see a Geisha wear. The shorter girl had a rounder face and green eyes, mezmerizingly matching the eye color of the taller girl's eyes. Silver, halo rings decorated her ears, and gave her quite an elegant look.

Mabus suddenly stood up and approached the two, his face showed sorrow, but happiness at the same time. He smiled as he approached the taller girl and gave her a welcoming hug. The taller girl happily hugged Mabus back.

"Lara.. it's good to see you."- Mabus spoke in a warm voice. Wingzero came behind and stretched his hand towards Lara who smirked and shaked his hand.

"Zero.. where did the long hair go?"- she asked, still smirking and glancing from Mabus to Wingzero. Mabus came to the shorter girl and too, gave her a hug.

"Glad to see you make it Gen."

"I was expecting to see that beer belly of yours"- Gencdo applied on Mabus's well built figure and shook hands with Wingzero who still had his post trauma expression.

"Glad to see you girls."- the blonde tried to smile as he too, gave a short welcoming speech.

Mabus then showed both girls towards the large window, with Wingzero following behind them. There were a series of questions of well being and real life situations before Lara came to asking the facts. At that point, both guys suddenly came back to their worst facial expressions of difficulty and hatred.

"You guys look like you've seen a ghost.."- Gencdo said, her smile suddenly started to dissapear. She looked from Mabus to Wingzero and vice versa, then glancing over to Lara. She could feel that something was definitely wrong here. But what?

"It's... complicated.."- Wingzero was the first to give an answer, but it never gave a solid reply, on what was going on. Mabus then turned around and faced the window. Gencdo came by his side and put a hand on his shoulder, digging into Mabus's eyes in order to find some sort of answers.

"Mabus.. what did you find out?"-she asked, her voice showed concern. Lara turned away from the group, and walked towards the large desk that contained all Mabus's work. Slowly digging through files she reached for the yellow folder bag labeled "The Nothing" and reached for the journal inside.

"Something bad is going on.."- Mabus replied, his head down, eyes hiding from Gencdo's glares. "It's just a theory but it's possible, and most probably is even true.."

Lara listed the pages faster and faster, her heart beating faster with each page she skimmed through, hands starting to shake. The journal dropped from her hands and fell onto the floor with a thump. The group at the window turned at the direction of the thump noise that was made, and Wingzero was the first to take a few steps towards Lara's direction.

"Is.. is.. it possible?"- Lara stuttered, eyes wide open, not believing what information she just went through. In the end, accepting that the world would end in a few days wasn't the kind of information anyone wanted to know at any point in their lives.

Mabus hurried towards Lara side and gently grabbed her by the shoulders, leading her a few steps back, away from the large desk.

"The end of the world... but how come?"- she continued to ask questions, her mind loosing focus on what should be thought about, and what shouldn't.

"End of the world?"- Gencdo questioned, looking from Mabus to Wingzero. Both girls seemed to have recieved enough trauma they would need in order to faint, but both stood steady against the cruel truth. The thunder outside now banged like an orchestre marching across the street, lighting flashing as frequently as it could in order to create the worst atmosphere of all. What irony, a lazy afternoon, now turned into a dark and shattered, drama atmosphere.

Wingzero's face suddenly changed, as if he caught up on the events, but instead of saying anything else, he turned around and hurried towards the windows, looking up at the clouds above. Narrowing his eyes, and taking off his oval, black glasses, he raised his right hand, as if in first grade, asking permission to speak. Facing the group with his back, he did not ask wether he was to speak or not, but kept his hand half way up.

"Do you guys hear that?"- he asked curiously, turning his head halfway to lean his ear towards the window.

"The thunder?"- Mabus answererd, his voice too, changing into a rather curious tone. Besides, what was Wingzero talking about? The only thing you could hear was the thunder and Lara's quiet mumbling in Italian.

"Shhh.."- Wingzero raised his finger to his lips, indicating for none to speak. "Listen."

The three slowly came closer to the large window and glanced up at the clouds. There was nothing in the skies that would interest anyone, but a strange noise was indeed, penetrating the storm's opera, somewhere not so far away.

"Sounds like microwave to me.."- Gencdo slowly whispered, her eyes set on the skies above her. Rain was pouring down hard, and it was hard to hear where the noise as coming from.

"It's coming closer.."- Mabus whispered, his eyes fixed on Wingzero, who still had his ears leaned against the window's glass.

The immense humming noise that reminded any old microwave was slowly coming closer, the hum was irritating to ears, yet interesting to mind. What was immiting such noise, and where was it coming from? Those were the possible thoughts that buzzed through the group's heads, but none of them knew, what was coming, or where from. Gencdo suddenly jumped back, as if electrified with an immense shock of electricity. Reaching for her pockets, she threw away her phone that was vibrating harder than any telephone anyone would usually encounter.

"What the hell?"- she cried out, holding her shoulders with her hands, taking another couple of steps away from the phone that was now smoking as if on fire.

Lara and Mabus suddenly jumped back from the window as well, as their phones fell from their pockets, vibrating even louder than Gencdo's phone. Wingzero too, grabbed his primitive phone and threw it away as far away as possible from himself, eyeing the three that were now standing in one line, looking at their smoking phones that lay on the floor.

"What the hell is this?"- Wingzero raised his tone, no one in the room, though, could give an answer, thus the question was never answered. Instead, Mabus turned his head to the direction of the window and narrowed his eyes, facial expression was neutral, and all he did was point a finger at the skies infront of him. Slowly, Wingzero and the other two girls turned around to face the window once again. The skies were not clear, but what was there, could be seen clearly. Wingzero put his glasses back on, and put both his palms at the window, glaring right at the object that was aproximately half the size of a moon, looked like an asteroid, and was slowly, coming closer to Earth with each second's breath.

"Now what the hell is THAT?"- Gencdo made her question clear, stressing on the last word, eyes wide open. This whole day was starting to turn out really bad for all of them.

"You tell me..."- Mabus slowly spoke as if time was slowing down, the humming noise was now clearly coming from the object that was enclosing steady, it's impact point about five miles away from the Institution.

"Are we going to die?"- Lara spoke, her voice shaking, as her whole body did.

But there seemed to be no answer to that question. The answer lay clear infront of them, in the skies, slowly coming to meet their fatal end.

***

The figure stood steady on the rooftops, holding a telephone in it's right hand, it spoke in a steady, male voice. The call he was making was particularly important, for, the circumstances that were before the world now, were not so friendly. The rain poured hard down on him, but the male ignored it for the past 30 minutes. His conversation with the other end of the line was no going well.

"I understand."- he spoke, his voice solid, showing no emotions. The voice on the other end of the line seemed to shout, as if, the background sound was interrupting their converstaion. There were a quick exchanges of words before the male slowly removed the phone away from his ears and looked around. There was this irritating humming noise that came from nowhere, reminding him of an old microwave about to give it's last energy in order to warm up a two week's spaghetti meal.

"Are you damn cooking something?"- the young male's voice shouted from the other end, but the male dressed in black ignored the phone. Instead he suddenly glanced on the display screen of his phone that showed that his battery was almost empty.

"What the-?"- he suddenly questioned himself as an electrifying shock of sharp energy penetrated his whole body, sending him flying a few feet back from his position. Landing with a thump, he tossed the phone as far as he could from the roof, and looked up the grey skies that now had a new item in collection. Still lying down, paralyzed from the electro shock, he couldn't help but stare at the object that was slowly enclosing to the Earth in a steady stance. It looked like an asteroid set on fire, but it's oval shape didn not remind the male of any steroid he'd see in books or astronomy classes.

Forcing himself to stand up, and barely doing so, he watched the oval object hit the earth with a heavy thump. The ground instantly shook, and trying to keep balance on the roof, the male watched a large wave of dust and invisible force make it's way towards the institution. It happened in an instance, but seemed to be never ending. A rapid sound that reminded him of thousands of cars, passing all at once, right by his ears.

"*."

The large wave came crashing down on the institution, erasing the rooftops and the figure on top with a large bowl of dust and rock. The whole area was instantly covered in dust and earth, and it was no longer visible wether the institution survived the impact, or wether the male on top was still alive. The chances of both were very unlikely. Todome.

***

As the asteroid hit the earth, the group of four suddenly let out a series of shrieks and cries. The earth kept shaking, and they held unto each other to hold balance on the red marble floor. It was their instinct that led them, or maybe they thought about it while watching the asteroid fall, but they all suddenly went for the desks, and hid under, girls first, guys last. Gencdo held ono Lara and Mabus, while Wingzero was at the other side of the table, eyes closed, praying that this was all a bad dream. They all wished it would be. Last thing anyone remembered was the loud shrieking of both girls, and the irretating sound that came from that damn steroid . The wave covered the whole building quickly, breaking the window's glass, and making it's way into the conference room. Here too, dust and earth have made great artwork, it all seemed that the institution was about to be borrowed forever, and their only occupants with it. There was no way any ordinary human beings were to survive such an impact.
