Schools
I feel that in schools, teachers think that the students are like a bunch of beakers that can be filled with knowledge. However, I find that most of my learning comes outside the school. This ratio of learning in and out of school by far excedes 50%.
As usual, the question: what do you think?

well...
lol
I laugh because right now im taking a class that is about the sociology of education. its been a ride thats for sure. I actually have a midterm to study for but psh, thats on tuesdays. ive got tons of time.
so anyway. onto the question.
learning is the act of gaining knowledge and/or incite by way of experience. "experience" can then be defined as knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone. this kind of includes going to school lol.
sadly, the way the school system is set up (right now at this very moment) is not about teaching you things in the way of specific subjects. yes that is a byproduct of the institution but the real goal is to learn social interactions. we all go to school early on to learn that we need to do what our teachers want for us to do well. is this any different from how you will be expected to function after your school days are done?
no, its the same. we are held accountable for our actions and are expected to deliver for the greater good and in a timely manor.
more over, since every school is simply just a business, for those schools to get money their students have to perform at a certain level. if they dont the school gets less money and can even be fined. this is where standardized tests come in. and how (at least when i was in high school) our SAT course was teaching us the tips and tricks to the test and not the information on it. using the process of elimination and so on so that if were were mindless idiots we could still use common sense to get buy.
thus the school would get more money for teaching us less AND still instilling the fact that common scene is all you need to function in society.
sure we need scientist and other high level people to run these institutions, but the idea is that those that have a gift for science or whatever will show that early on and be taken ahead of the general population. by doing that they lose most of the social "training" that the gen public gets.
i can go on and on about how schools in the states are detrimental to society, the economy, how it promotes racism even without segregation and how it can keep the lower class, middle class, and upper class in those categories for generations.
basically, the education system is meant to keep the social structure the same for the future generations.
Even worse, its not going to change in my lifetime.

i totally agree, im living proof you can still be acceptible to intelligence without school and my friends, are prooof that school does not neccesarily make you smart XD
but it also depends on how you are at school, how much you pay attention and how your teachers do thier classes -.-
but i think its kinda abvious you learn a lot outside of school regardless of all that anyway XD

Yeah, I'd have to say most of what I learned in school was not in the classroom. But most of what I learned in those years was not in the schoolhouse. I didn't socially interact inside those walls. I barely even went really. When I was in my late teens most of my friends where in their late 20's early 30's and I had little to no interest in socializing with people my own age.

i agree to some degree with T-rex...that's the way it is, but it's not the way it should be -.- school should supposedly help you learn the basics about whatever subjects you take, but you need to put that knowledge to practice when you leave school
i believe i've learned lots since i entered university, but it sad to say that more than half of it i learned from classmates, not teachers. there are very few teachers who actually know the stuff and even less who know how to transmit it. in the 31 teachers i've had, only 2 or 3 actually know what they do and show us how to do it.
the other day i was checking on a job description and i realized i only knew about 10% of the things they asked, and that i wouldn't get the rest of the knowledge from uni
so yeah, in conclusion, school's only good cos you can learn how to interact with ppl, and to give you time to grow up, not just physically but mentally. of course, you can grow up mentally in a dozen different ways, but society has claimed school as the most acceptable one
