School Shootings
We had a presentation about the Columbine Shooting recently at my school, and I never really knew the details about it, but after learning about it I became very depressed. Of course, we also had the Virginia Tech shooting this year, which was the worst in American history.
The issue I wanted to discuss is not so much the actual events, but the motives and causes behind the killers. Each incident, the killers were some kind of outcast, and were violent from numerous things. It's possibly the saddest thing I've ever seen, students killing other students, and it also strikes a fear in me. Thoughts?
For those of you not in America you may not know, so just google either one.
There's a very graphic video I also saw recently, but I doubt anyone wants to see it.

first off, virginia tech was so horrible because of the way the school handled it. (rather crappily) not to mention that wasnt even the first shooting that year. you believe that!
and you should see the documentary "bowling for columbine" i remember we had to watch that in high school a couple times.
anyway, motives.... i just feel that some people grow up around the wrong people and environment and cant handle everyday life. most kids get picked on, and i think we've all go through feelings of being an outcast in some situation but we all dont go on killing sprees. bottom line, if we could have done MRI scans to all the people that do these things, youd see some not so normal brain activity. they've done it with murderers before. considering we still dont know a whole lot about the brain though, we are pretty clueless and these people have no way of even realizing that what they are doing is wrong sometimes.
the brain is a crazy organ and we will never understand it full i dont think.
but i feel it boils down to nature vs nurture but infact its not one, but a combination of both (obviously) that makes these kids go and do what they end up doing.

Yes the Virginia Tech shootings was horrible, as was Columbine....and to answer your question seifer: Yes I've seen "Bowling for Columbine" good movie
Shootings such as those 2 have similar motives: The outcast taking in all the bullying of everyone else, when the authority does nothing about it to help until they break, being lonely alot and taking in all the udder crap society has to offer them, they can't handle it as seifer said...and of course the authority blames it on everything else that points away from themselves; such as blaming it on the music they listen to or the movies they watch. Then you see kids from other countries watching and listening to the same things and they don't go shooting up schools and killing people and such....Our country is also gun crazy it seems....it seemed to have been so easy for the shooters of the 2 school shootings to get much gun power....
Then there's school shootings that involve gangs; Unfortunitly for me I went to a violent high school but fortuntly there were no shootings there even with the many threats amongst rival gangs and such...the motives of those type of shootings are clear:
Kill off the rival gang and become the most feared and most powerful clique.....

it always seems a pity to me that they usually end up shooting themselves...far too easy a way for them to go.
bowling for columbine was very good yes; very amusing as well seeing some of the excuses made, such as one chap mentioning the gun crime is due to americas 'violent past'.
we are all born equal as far as ability to act out such terrible things go, but then terrible upbringing and events can change people so drastically.

Yeah I remember that pt. in the movie
Then they looked back on other countries history who had very few shootings statistically
We are just a gun crazy country, and that was wrong when Charlton Heston came to Columbine like soon after it happened promoting gun use and the right to bear arms and such :/
I was like what the f*ck??

Promotion of gun use is definitely wrong..... On one hand gun laws can help with self defence, but on the other hand, if there was a paranoid guy holding it, I'm not sure its helpful at all.
As for Virginia Tech, it was the mistake of the staff not to alert people quicker. I mean, how long does it take to send a mass email to everyone in the uni anyway? 10 minutes? And how hard is it to send a few people around telling them of what happened, and call the police? I would think around 30 minutes at most.
Surely 2 murders is more than enough to tell people to stay indoors, especially on a university campus?
As for the background stuff, its not as if the guy who was shooting had a perfect record.....

well my problem with the virginia tech is that emails arent the most effective way to get a message out. sure for student off campus thats cool but theres no pa system on campus? im sure the uni has their own security so they could have gone out and told people, block off areas and so on. specifically dorms to stop people from leaving and then have the cops on the scene looking for the crazy guy. and like i said, this was the second shooting that year. they didnt learn anything?!?!?!

Well, the biggest thing was, why on the earth did the cops not arrive after having discovered 2 murders? I mean, surely deaths would be quite a high priority.....

this is quite a hard topic cause you realy don't know what was going on in the head of the killer, but they're usually teased on a lot aren't they?
i know that if you get teased a lot, you might blow at a point and not know what you're doing, but for me that never ended in grabbing a weapon, so i kinda presume that it's too easy to consider weapons in the usa, because basicly anyone can get a gun
the fact that computer games, music, tv got anything to do with it is in my opinion a bunch of balony, i've been playing "violent" games since i was 11, i watched movies 16+ since i was 12, and never ended up thinking "omg, that's cool, lets kill some people in real life too!" i could always see the difference between reality and fiction, though you indeed got people who sometimes lose that screen and believe everything they see, but that's still a rare fact i gues...

Violent games etc only increase your aggression if by nature you're already aggressive. It won't exactly be the cause I think.

and now this nebraska mall shooting ugh.
brings up the other topic of security. to be honest, my highschool and nearby mall has nothing in terms of security. yes we arent a huge town but still. precautions need to be taken.
and then when they do people complain about the inconvience of being safe! i hate stupidity so freaking much.

Its more than just games, religion and movies, even history can delude the thoughts of an extremist. I think the shooter from Virginia just let go, and left the veil of reality for an idea of vengeance, threw militant force. not unlike the religious zealots intent on "one World".

As a High School Student I am afraid that something like that might happen but I also feel that if it did I could handle myself and I feel that the school would be able to handle it too. Also most of the friends I have would probably have done something like that if I hadn't been there to keep them from going over the edge so I know how it feels to have that kind of fear heck one of them almost brought a gun on campus.
