Once while I was playing this game I was fighting a giant tree I forget were or why. But I attacked with pheonix later in the fight my party died and pheonix came and revived my party! It never happened again though. Has this ever happened to you? Is it just random chance? Or is there a trick to getting it to happen again?

I thought Phoenix always revived fallen party members. Maybe it's only when it shows the little video sequence of the summoning. If you've not noticed this, when you use summon sometimes it does a video sequence (it always shows the little video sequence the first time you use the summon in the game) and it usually does more damage. Maybe with Phoenix, it only revives fallen party members when it shows the video. I'm sure it always revived any dead party members every time I used it though.

What I'm saying is that my entire party died. Of course if you still have one person standing the natural thing to do would be summon phenix and have him revive the three lying unconsience. But this wasn't the case. The case was that four people died and mygame over screen should have popped up, but instead... Da-da-dah-DAH! Phenix to the rescew! XD

I really don't think so beacause the sequence for phenix was different I honestly just think that it's a rare occurence. Like mickey comming to save everyone in Kingdom Hearts. If you're thinking I made this up then I appoligize for even raising the topic.

You should be disemboweled for suggesting that I would play that cash cow for both Disney and Square. Disney is the company of Lucifer, and Square were really being a sell out.
Anyway, it appears that you are indeed correct. According to a walkthrough on GameFAQs there is a random chance of this happening if you have Eiko in your party, which is why I never saw it.

just to put this out there since u were going against that tree thinger (i cant remeber the name at the moment) but when u use pheonix against it that will happen and it is obvious. everyone knows this. the phoenix is the bird of life. and fire. when u set the tree on fire it will use mustard bomb. thus killing u once u move and giving u life right after u die.

Zidane, read the quote in my above post. This Phoenix has a different cutscene and is a rare occurrence which only happens when every character is dead.
Just to point out the huge flaw in your little theory, you use Phoenix, the summon will finish, then the Tree thing will launch the counter-attack. Because the summon would have ended before the counter attack your party wouldn't be revived by it unless this occurrence happens.
As for "putting the topic out", the topic was ended until you dug it up again. Try actually reading the posts in future.

Did you use a phoenix pinion(might be from the wrong game) but its a good item you use it and it reserves phoenix until all your characters die...it even shows the phoenix summon.
