Roleplay Faq (Want to add? PM me!)
What is Roleplaying?
When role-playing on a message board, the player controls a character, and works them into the plot along with other characters controlled by other players. The end result is an unpredictable story that may or may not finish, depending on the length of story and devotion of the players. These games are divided into many different genres, topics, literacy-levels, and can even be divided based on the sexual orientation of the RP characters (not to be confused with sexual roleplaying, where 'cybering' or other various forms of sexual gratification are the sole purpose, which is NOT ALLOWED in these forums). Many roleplayers prefer to play multiple or competing characters, or control some cases large entities like corporations or nations.
Terms YOU should know
Literate-
A term usually referring to those that write in long paragraphs with a high level of grammar and vocabulary. This is the roleplaying for those who have done it for a while, and is usually slapped on a topic title so people know what there getting into. ie: Raven's Fire (LITERATES ONLY!)
OOC-
Means Out Of Character and is usually charachterized by (()). This is used when you want to say something that has nothing to do with the roleplay. ie: (I gtg!)
Godmoding-
Used as a basic rule of thumb. People don't like when YOU ACT LIKE A GOD! This entails never getting hit, regenerating health and energy instantly, and any other action that makes you invincible.
The Puppeteer-
Usually other people don't like it when you force their characters to do things in your post. This is the what the infamous Puppeteer does! don't do it unless it states in the Rp's rule that it is allowed!
Metagaming
A term to describe someone who uses knowledge gained out of character and not obtained in character or within the storyline.
NPC
This mean's Non Playable Character. An NPC can be a shop clerk you happen to talk to or a monster that you battle. You CAN control an NPC, but do not make the NPC attack other players unless you have an ability that allows you to do so, such as a Necromancer.
Multi,Para,Semi Roleplaying
Multi means writing more than one paragraph, Para means just one paragraph, Semi means half a paragraph.

Tips on Fighting With other People
General Tips:
Say you are entranced in a intense battle with a friend, or you are trying to impress that "Significant Other" in every Roleplay by showing your amazing prowess on a unsuspecting NPC, what should you do? In general, the more descriptive posts are the better posts. Now I am by no means saying write a novel, but put some creativity into your work! Say that I wanted my fictitious Character Grez to attack a raven. I could write:
"Grez slashes at the raven with all his might"
Or I could write:
"Grez eyes down the illustrious raven with a keen eye. He stares it down and says "You will regret messing with me!" ,smiling. He lifts his sword, its hilt glistening in the light, and slashes downward into the wing of the raven."
Now the latter of the two is much more descriptive and the seasoned Roleplayers of many websites enjoy, and require, this type of writing. Also this type of writing makes it harder for the opponent to attack. Say you wrote the less descriptive post, I could easily dodge your attack because you did not state where you were to hit me. For example, say you said the less descriptive post:
"The Raven moves swiftly to the side of Grez's attack, and begins to peck his foolish head."
So a rule of thumb should be to write descriptive posts to the best of your ability. And don't worry if you aren't terrific at Roleplaying when you begin! I'm still learning myself.
When battling a NPC:
When creating a monster for you to fight you can let your imagination soar. As long as it is in the realms of the Roleplay the action of creating a NPC should be a intresting plot twist. But don't forget to always follow the rules provided for each distinct Roleplay thread because their rules might be different.
When battling another Player
For this situation always remember to respect your opponent. Don't Godmod or play Puppeteer. And as long as you both seem to be having fun there shouldn't be any problems!

General Tips on Roleplaying....in General
-The use of the (*) expresses a persons actions. This can be used in ways such as "Hello" *Cough Cough* "I am Unny". But this may not always be used depending on the player's style.
-When leaving a roleplay, don't just make some snide remark such as the following:
"ABC blows up the world....and then dies."
Instead try to take your leave in a mature way, writing something that won't ruin everything for everyone else. Just put a little effort into leaving a Roleplay and everyone will thank you. Or maybe it will just be me...(Submitted by ElementPhoenix)

Creating Your Own Character
Creating your own character is easy but the information you provide depends on the roleplay group. For example in this roleplay group you must provied the following information,
Username: (for example Haine would put Haine here)
Name:
Gender:
Age:
Appearance:
Specie:
Profession: ie: Wandering Swordsman, Shopkeeper, Chocobo Knight, ect
Weapons:
Pet (Optional):
Special Abilities :
Bio (optional): Useful if making your own character.
Username - This is where you place the current name you are using around the forum (^^) for example Haine would put Haine here. The reason is so when people look at the characters profiles they'll know who's playing them and might pm them for some special participation or just general information they'd like to know.
Name - Now choosing a name for your character is always fun! The only thing is it might bother the other players. NEVER choose the same name as another roleplayer's character or they just might murder you (^^") besides if people don't read usernames they'll get confused. Something unique and not abnormally long is just perfect! \(^^)/
Gender - Names don't always tell the gender of your character so telling people what gender your character is very important. The gender will effect the way the other roleplayer's character treat your character.
Age - Sometimes this can be left unknown because of special circumstances but its always nice to know your characters age. Once again this will also effect the way they treat your character.
Appearance - Now this is VERY important! Even though all roleplayers have active imaginations doesn't mean they can just picture your character. Somethings to include in this section are;
Height
Body Figure
Hair Colour
Eye Colour
Skin Colour
Marks
Style of Clothing
Specie - Most games don't just have humans as characters, they may have vampires, bunny humanoids etc. This will also effect how others treat your character.
Profession - Knowing what your character does helps the story progress. This wil also effect how others will treat your character.
Weapons - This does a fairly major part in helping the story progress as well. In some roleplays fighting scenes will occur and knowing what your going to use to kill monsters and such will be nice to know.
Pet (Optional) - Some roleplayers will like to have some sort of animal with them to help the story progress or something useful to use when roleplaying.
Special Abilities - This will help in fighting scene or scenes where help is needed.
Bio - This is where you talk about your character and how they ended up what they are now. Some roleplayers include their characters pasts problems, lovers, friends, etc. Another big thing to include is the personality of your character. Knowing how your character acts will help the other roleplayers in how to respond to what you have posted.

How To Roleplay
Your probably saying, "yeah yeah all that's great but how do you ROLEPLAY when I post?" Well! Aren't you in luck cause we're going to tell you! lol (^^).
- When your talking about your character's action or how they look like you type in third person ex.
[Isabelle's hair draped behind her and dragged across the stone floor as she walked closer to her enemy. Fear wrapped itself around Isabelle but she reached out to touch the one standing before her. Isabelle's silky palm met against a rouch surface of scars and painful memories.]
Something like that! But of course you can always be more creative and play with words or become more descriptive! This is like writing a story but the only difference is that you have no control of what is going on and you only write at your character's point of view (unless you have more then one character then you also write about there point of view as well lol)
- When your character is talking you will type in third person as if you were the one talking. ex.
["I don't know where I am or who I am but you could atleast tell me who you are!"]
Simple right? (^^)
- So now you mix your characters action and description with your characters speech. ex.
[Isabelle stepped back from the one before her and look them right in the eye. "Why did you come here? Have you come here to..." She shiver at the thought that passed her mind but continued. "kill me? Because of what I am?" She stepped further back as she finished her question and tear began to run down her face. Death seems to surround her all the time and now death is chasing her. Her grey eyes shimmered in the moonlight as Isabelle stepped closer to the window.]
ooh deep lol anyways you can balance it out with speaking and actions. Though you can always have more action/discription then talking OR you can have more talking then action/discription.
- Now on to format! This really depends on you! lol (^^) Here's a some that are normally used.
Ex. Paragraph
Ex. Talking - action - talking - action
[Isabelle stepped back from the one before her and look them right in the eye.
"Why did you come here? Have you come here to..."
She shiver at the thought that passed her mind but continued.
"kill me? Because of what I am?"
She stepped further back as she finished her question and tear began to run down her face. Death seems to surround her all the time and now death is chasing her. Her grey eyes shimmered in the moonlight as Isabelle stepped closer to the window.]
(If you would like more examples just read on to the older boards of roleplaying and you'll have a better understanding, just read some of the old posts ^^)
