Revolution What Ifs
I was browsing Gaia and I found this interesting topic:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10237215
For those too lazy to browse here's part of the topic post:
| Quote: |
| Do you think that the Nintendo Revolution would be recieving the same amount of response if another company made it? Many people seem to have faith in Nintendo, yet they still feel skeptical about the controller. Some have complete faith in Nintendo. Some don't like the Revolution just because it's made by Nintendo. |
I've omitted the later portion because I believe the topic got side tracked there. It's obvious that there are more companies out there who may make consoles other than Sony and Microsoft.
The important thing is, if it's not Nintendo. Will you still consider it "revolutionary" ?

Sure, if it is revolutionary. The PSOne was revolutionary in some ways.
But if it's a flop, then it's a flop. Doesn't matter who made it.

Yeah, I think a lot of people currently doubt the Revolution sinply because it is Nintendo. We'll wait and see.

Not really. AFAIK, the PSOne was the first with two sets of L & R buttons, two analog sticks, and vibration in the controllers. I think it was the first system with portable memory cards as well.

i think nintendo is good, when you think about it the Gamecube has pritty good graphics so if more people had brought one then there may have been top games on it like Grand Theft Auto etc.

It will all come down to how well people are able to make that controller work. It is is soldi for more then a novelty then they might have something, but you know you can play FF7 with a DDR pad on PS@...but it dosn't mean that you necessairly should.

Today I got my Game Informer magazine and it had an official look at the prototype Revolution controller. I can't find an image online of it, but there's a chance that I could scan the page in tomorrow & post it.
The controller looks more like a remote control for a TV or DVD than a game controller. It has very few buttons. When held sideways, the controller works like a NES or SNES controller.
The controller itself does not have an analog stick, but you can attatch one to it. It's called the "nunchuk".
Also, you can move the controller and the view will move in the same direction. Say, for example, that you are playing an FPS...if you were to move the controller up and left, your character would look up & left. It'll be interesting for aiming and potentially get close to computer's Keyboard & Mouse for accuracy...
But who knows. It sounds awfully interesting.

I think that it will not translate into a real world enviroment very weel or at least not as cleanly as a mouse keyboard combo for first person shooters. I think it will be very disorienting to play and difficult to correctly calibrate to provide fluid movements. I think a keyboard mouse set up works so well for FPS because you are only limited to one plane of movement for your controller and it is defined by the surface of your physical desktop. I work with alot of AV equipment in my job, and we have a wireless mouse that we give people to use for presentations that allows you to wave it around similar to what I imagine you can do with the revolution and it is one of the most frustrating pieces of equipment to use and insanely imprecise. Most people who request this mouse for a presentation usually end up not using it because it is so difficult to master.
I think with the Revolution controller you will be looking at something very similar. It will have a high learning curve, and will discourage lots of people from picking up a system with a controller that they are not comfortable with. I think that the N64 and game cube controllers were to complicated to use and that Nintendo has gone further down this path with this new abomination, which is sad, because they were off to such a good start with the NES and SNES controllers.

I think When it will come out it will blow every one away. It is comming with free wireless online and you can download 20 years of nintendo games for a small fee.

My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it came, the wind carried the same thing. Death. But the winds that blew across the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I coveted that wind, I suppose." ~ Ganondorf. |

Wow...my friend has the same avatar as you do on a different forum, Nintendo_### (too lazy to scroll up), so I thought you were him posting.
Anyways, the new controllers will probably dissuade some from getting it, and intrigue others into how well it works. So they'll get some curiosity buys and some "no way" lack-of-buys.
In GI it did say that the controller worked very well in it's detection of where you move it, saying it was almost identical to your movement, and it IS only a prototype, so when the final comes out, it should be even more accurate.
And I'd say GI is one of the more true magazines out there 'cause it's about PC, Xbox, PS, & Nintendo so it's gonna tell the truth instead of nudging you to buy their stuff (like Xbox Mag, Nintendo Power, or PS Mag would do).

dude by the way the comment you made about the gamecubes controller being hard to use id crap, it takes very little time to use and becomes the most useful lay out on a control. eg metiod prime, you running around with the anoulouge making it far mor acurate move meant than a d-pad. the a button your firing button what could be more simple than that? the x button right next to the a button providing quick switch to morph ball, y right above for fast missile firing, the shoulder buttons used either for auto aiming or the more acurate aiming for yourself. the b button right underneath the a button for fast dodging sideways and jumping. all this combined with the acuracy of the anoulouge stick, im not finished yet either the d-pad for fast switching of visors depending on the situation, and the c stick underneath the a nd b buttons for switching of weapons. what i am trying say is that nintendo thought out the lay out of the controller the rest didn't, not trying to to say the others are crap just saying they didn't change their controllers obviously the playstaion 2 and the xbox is way to similar as well.
