ready to get a PS3 and....
so im tipped off to a deal
80gb PS3 for $250
score. awesome, its time to get a PS3. the higher quality one too.
so i go to the sony store. and after a few minutes of browsing i discover a few things.
1: its hard to get any info about the different models
2: its near impossible to determine if the 80gig supports BC
3: its hard to determine how the $400 and the $500 bundle are different. besides $85 in free software (what?)
in short, i find out that there is a new revision in September, but they did it silently,
the new revision eliminates ALL PS2 compatability across both 80gb and 40gb models.
im still now sure how the MGS bundle is worth an extra $100 the game is $60 (or $35 on ebay) plus the downloadable game pain (not that much $)
just as bad they are apparently coming out with a 160gb model.. that offers..... 80gb more... WHUPPITY FREAKING DO. undoubtably it will arrive at the $500 price point. for that much a jump in price i can get a 400gb harddrive and install it myself
not to mention that the new revision:
removes two USB ports
removes MMC functionality (no cards)
what the *excuse me* HELL is sony doing? removing key features over time? offering insane bundles that anyone with any sort of shopping knowledge wont purchase.
you may be like "but who ever uses MMC cards? and will you really play PS2 games?"
PS2 games are dirt cheap on ebay, ill get plenty of the good ones i missed out on since i sold my PS2 (like shadow and God of war) and having the MMC port will be nice since im trying to get a $100 front to use the thing as a media center. no memory cards=not a good media center.
man, i was psyched up to get a PS3 when i heard the news, now i really don't wanna get one.
then again if i wait any longer they will remove MORE features.
[edit] the deal i was told of is buy something $400 or more and get $150 off when you get a new credit card. so i dident even point out that now the 40gb and the 80gb are the same except for $100 for 40gigs more. (or 400gig for $100 off of newegg remember...)

im gonna be honest with you, i assume you still have a ps2 right? keep it. dont worry about bc with ps2 games (all ps1 games are a given)
sony tells you you can buy and replace the harddrive yourself so do it right away and have a 500gb ps3. this being the case there is no reason to buy the 80 gig or 160 gig model ever. also, replacing the hard drive does not void the warrenty so go to town.

dont have a PS2, sold it in 2003 after burning through one a year (3), very disappointed in the durability of the console and the service offered (sony made me pay for repairs each time even though it was covered in warranty.)
that's why i was hoping to get a PS3 with backwards compatibility, but apparently no models will be having BC (rather than at least one of them having it)
i know about the changing of the drive, i detail that for exactly $100 you can get a 400gb harddrive.
i looked up on sonys website for the $150 thing.
its a little different than i was told.
i have to buy something that is $300 or more
and i get $150 credit.
meh.

lol, same here man XD
and thorlord, if you had the damn slim models, then yea, your right, the durability of those damn flimsy ass POS's is like a 1/10. The PS2s my family got at release, same as seifer's if i read his post right, are incredably durable, these things have gone through hell over the years and only one of the four has broken down on us, only to open it up and make a simple adjustment that fixed it... Those little slim knockoff things are crap, and i would never buy one for more than $10...
Anyways those are my two cents, and I'll add my psn in a year, when I don't have to lie about my age to get in by myself >.>

I have two ps2 slimlines and both work perfect for me. Except there was a power cord recall at one stage.
All PS3 here don't play ps2 games either but it won't bother me if I get a ps3, but I'm leaning back towards pc games now so might not even get a 'current gen' console lol

Luckily I got my PS3 at launch so it plays the PS2 games or most of them anyway. I think if you want BC in a PS3 now you either have to get a 60gig from launch which will now cost more as theres so few about or hope that Sony are working on some sort of software emulation for the console.
If your just looking for hard drive space the hard drives in the PS3 can be changed for a PC one so you can have a 400gb hard drive if you want. I may even have to do that on my PS3 at some point as im down to less than 10gigs of space left now thanks to some of the games having to install.

yah i know about the harddrive thing, i pointed out in my post that a 400gig is exactly $100 so to pay more for a pointless upgrade is insane.
what i was wondering is why is sony removing features from the PS3 as time goes on.. isint the smart thing to do is ADD features to attract new people?

sony is pretty ridiculous. i think they think there are so many ps2's out in the population that backwards compatibility isnt needed. chances are they had to have some kind of problem with it for the simply fact that when it was an option, some ps2 games still didnt work.
in the future, im sure there will be some kind of emulation put out for the ps3, even if it isnt official. heck, you can install an OS on the ps3 as long as you make a different partition. at least thats what some of the options in the ps3 have lead me to believe. if thats the case then a ps2 emulator put on there would work.
im at 15ish gigs free right now on my 40gb ps3 so i should indeed look into another hd. i dont put music on there (though i will once i get wipeout. a few cds anyway) but really, the install requirements arent that bad for the games so anything over 80 gigs is silly (unless you are using it as a media hub which is cool)
as for you stappy... buying a next gen console (ps3 or 360) makes more sense than upgrading your pc every 2 years to play new games. supposedly this gen consoles will last a long time and game will be garentied to run smoothly on them. money wise (regardless of the high price of the ps3) it makes more sense to play games on a console. also throw in the fact that most pc games are now on the 360 and some on the ps3.. you cant really go wrong. and the new drop in price on the 360's means you can find a crazy good deal on one.

from what i've heard, the PS4 will be coming in 2010 and use the cell processor (though a highly optimized and higher clocked version of it) which should hopefully mean that the PS4 should have native PS3 support.
i think thats just what i'll do, wait a year and a half or so and get myself a PS4.

but really, if thats the case it would just be an updated version of the ps3 (like the slim ps2). they would be stupid to call it the ps4.

nono, its completely rumor.
well, an unofficial statement.
what? 2006 to 2010? 4 years is the minimum time we have seen for a new console to release. so its the soonest we could see it.
there were one or two articles on digg about the PS4 and what it would entail.
http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/88328/playstation-4-sooner-than-we-think/
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10042820-17.html
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entetainment/playstation-4-coming-in-2010-playstation-3-to-be-media-hub-219190.php
three articles saying it could be out in 2010
on hardware
http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/007835.html
it makes sense for them to reuse the cell processor. it will make transitioning from making PS3 games to PS4 games easy for developers. as i said above it will make PS3 BC easy as hell. of course the processor will be more powerful than the PS3 cell, but the artecture will be similar (and also improved).
also, launching first gave microsoft a huge advantage over the PS3 as it is still selling more consoles. sony will want to try to launch first.

I just cant imagine them trying to put out a new console when they havent even seen a profit from the ps3 yet. its got a while to go before that happens at which point i would think they would make it better, smaller and for less (like the slim ps2). Also they made a ton of statements that i cant find saying they expect a 10 year life on the console so if they did put out the ps4 it would be all "but but but... you guys said if i spent all my monies now i wouldnt have to do it again for 10 years! *puppy dog face*"

I won't be getting a new pc every 2 years. My current pc is over 4 uyears old and it still works lol
When I say I'm playing pc games, I mean I'm gonna be playing one pc game for the year lol.
Warcraft 3 is currently what im playing and that works fine, the next game I want to get is of course Stargate Worlds MMO RPG *jumps up and down excitedly*
Consoles are very very tempting money wise, yes, but I don't play enough games now. I still have another 60% to go on GT4, and haven't finished FFXII yet either lol

If the PS3 had HD upscaling on all PS1 and PS2 games I would have bought it for that reason alone. They really made bad decisions.
