YEah man! I have read pretty much all of the books he has written around Drizzt and the others! R.A. Salvatore is an awesome writer!
P.S.- You should try reading George R.R. Martin's series "A Song of Ice and Fire". That is a long series but, really REALLY good!

Can't go wrong with Salvatore. He's written some greak book series.

Have the DemonWars Saga, Cleric Quintet, all the Drizzt books, Crimson Shadows Trilogy, The Spearwielder's Tale & War of the Shadow Queen... there are still a few that I haven't gotten in my ebook collection as of yet.... but I'll get there...

I never really got into Salvatore. I'm more of a (insert correct genre type here), like Robert Jordan's Wheel of time. I think I read into the hype on the back pages and expected literary gold off the get go. I don't think I read the right D'rizzt book either. I believe the first one I picked up was way into the series.

I've got all the Wheel of Time as well... can't wait for the last one....
Yeah... to get the full effect of Drizzt you kinda have to start @ the beginning & work from there... it's better that way, and well worth the read IMHO....

What is the first book in the Drizzt series... Or should I say what book does Drizzt first make his appearance in?

This is NOT the order they were written but this is the way they are chronologically as far as canon goes...
Dark Elf Trilogy
IceWind Dale Trilogy
Legacy of the Drow Quartet
Paths of Darkness Trilogy [doesn't include Servant of the Shard, this book is in the Sellswords Trilogy]
The Hunter's Blades Trilogy
Transitions Trilogy
Neverwinter [only 1 out so far]
Cleric Quintet is highly recommended as the characters cross over at points into the Drizzt's books.
The Sellswords Trilogy is also good, as it expands on a couple of characters from the series, but doesn't feature Drizzt.
I think that's about it
It's a lot... but I enjoy them... I usually reread them all about once a year...

So reading it in that order will allow me to see characters as they should be or would I have to read them in the order they were wrote?

Reading them in the order I gave is the best... if you want the full effect.... I'd read them in this order to get maximum effect & knowledge of characters....
*Dark Elf Trilogy
*IceWind Dale Trilogy
The Cleric Quintet [About Cadderly Bonaduce, doesn't feature Drizzt, but characters from this series cross over at points into Drizzt books]
*Legacy of the Drow Quartet
*Paths of Darkness Trilogy [doesn't include Servant of the Shard, this book is in the Sellswords Trilogy]
The Hunter's Blades Trilogy
The Sellswords Trilogy [about Artemis Entreri & Jalaxle, doesn't feature Drizzt, but goes into more detail about 2 of the characters of the Drizzt books & wraps up a major thread]
Transitions Trilogy
Neverwinter [only 1 out so far]
*These books are known also as the Legend of Drizzt series

I've heard this series trumps the Lord of The Rings series, and while it may be the forefather of high fantasy there are a lot of series out there that does trump LOTR.
What is the page count like? Anything like Wheel of Time or LOTR or shorter than that?

I'm not sure if it trumps LotR, or WoT... but I think it's definitely well worth reading... as for page count... each book individually is not the that bad... I read them on e-book.... so I can't give you page count, but I do know that they are shorter than both the LotR & WoT books...
